Gita Banning: Krishna’s side of the story

In the backdrop of the present sad controversy over the banning of the Bhagavad-gita in Russia, we present Lord Krishna’s side of the story. His take on the controversy is presented as a song based on poetic translations of four important Gita verses that express its message of love. The song comprises a chorus English verse and English renditions of those four verses followed by their Sanskrit originals.

A message of love,

Will you ban ?

All beings are my children beloved, the seed of life, I give to all,

Hindus, Muslims, Christians, humans, animals and plants, I love them all

sarva-yonishu kaunteya

murtayah sambhavanti yah

tasam brahma mahad yonir

aham bija-pradah pita (Bhagavad-gita 14.4)

My message of love,

Will you ban ?

For you, my child, I descend again and again,

Life and love immortal, to help you regain

yada yada hi dharmasya

glanir bhavati bharata

abhyutthanam adharmasya

tadatmanam srijamy aham (Bhagavad-gita 4.7)

My message of love,

Will you ban ?

Beauty, power and wealth, whatever you desire are sparks of mine

To fulfill your heart’s every longing, I reveal my message sublime

yad yad vibhutimat sattvam

shrimad urjitam eva va

tat tad evavagaccha tvam

mama tejo-‘msha-sambhavam (Bhagavad-gita 10.41)

My message of love,

Will you ban ?

Beneath all ritual hides love’s spiritual connection

There, free from all sorrow, lies everlasting satisfaction

sarva-dharman parityajya

mam ekam sharanam vraja

aham tvam sarva-papebhyo

mokshayishyami ma shucah  (Bhagavad-gita 18.66)

My message of love,

Will you ban ?

Ban instead, my child, this illusion dreadful

Of my love, why are you so fearful?

My message of love,

Will you ban ?

Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion – at that time I descend Myself.
