Did the worship of Krishna Deities exist before the appearance of Krishna in the world?

From Rajat Prabhu:

Did the worship of Krishna Deities exist before the appearance of Krishna in the world? And the same question can be applied to other incarnations.

Recently when I visited Remuna, I learnt that the deity of Gopinath there was given by Lord Rama to mother Sita to worship. Is it true? In that case we have an instance of deity of Lord Krsna in the Treta Yuga.

      Good point; thank you.
Not all sthala-kathas or sthala-Puranas are equally authentic, that’s why I didn’t quote from any of them. But those Sthala-mahatmayas (glorifications) that are quoted by the acharyas can definitely be used to substantiate the case here.
