In the Gita 1.1, why is Dhritarashtra’s asking “What did they do?” in the past tense instead of the present tense?

BG 1.1 : Why is Dhritarashtra asking “…What did they do?”. His question is in a past-tense as opposed to “…What are they doing?” (Present tense).
