When a devotee suffers more than a nondevotee, won’t this send a wrong message to atheists or novice devotees?

Naturally a devotee undergoes greater troubles compared to a non-devotee, would not this be a wrong inference to the atheists/novice devotees around about devotion? How should a devotee handle such situations?
