How were Jatayu and Sampatti able to fly towards the sun when there is no air in the space intervening between the earth and the sun?

In your lecture about Ramayana you were telling how Jatayu & Sampath were flying towards the sun when Sampath's wings were burnt. According to modern science there is vaccuum in the space so how without any air were these birds able to fly in space?
