I think it was not fanatical, inspite of being a disciple of chaitanya mahaprabhu he did gave up his material desires. Moreover, like ajamil he did not discussed his growing lust with his spiritual master, to check it. So, he himself decided his own fortune. His suicide all shows his love towards krishna, he knew what he did was wrong and to wash his sins he gave up his life.
