Are the four defects hierarchical: imperfect senses cause illusion, illusion causes mistakes etc?
Hare Krishna.
Question from Srikar Prabhu Is there a hierarchy among the four defects that one leads to another from the way you explained in your introduction in the bhakti shastri course it seems that because we have imperfect senses so we are put into illusion because we are put into illusion there is a cheating propensity we commit mistakes and because we want to conceal our mistakes so there is a cheating propensity so we cheat so is this understanding correct yes there is a progression among the four defects but that is not the only way the four defects can occur but that is one framework by which we can understand how we are defective so I will give the example that I have imperfect senses so for example I have I cannot see everything so I look around the world I am told that god is the creator of everything I say I can’t see god I can’t see god so by imperfect senses okay then based on that what do I do I am put into illusion what is the illusion that okay I look at say monkeys monkeys and humans look similar monkeys and humans look similar so therefore and monkeys also wink monkeys also have facial expressions monkeys also scratch their head monkeys do many things similar to humans so I think they are similar maybe they have similar ancestry so then I commit the mistake of thinking that they have come from the same ancestors and they have evolved from some ultimately from matter and finally I conclude that now when I can’t find evidence to support it I start saying that I conceal the contradictory evidence and bloat up the supporting evidence and then I build a case this is one way we can understand how the four defects are progression at the same time we can go deeper and also look at the point that sometimes we may commit mistakes not just because of the tendency to be put in illusion sometimes we may cheat not just because we have committed mistakes but because we feel that that will give us a better result that means yes I have spoken something wrong and after I speak I made a wrong prediction or something like that then in order to cover that up I may speak a lie oh I was misinformed so our cheating may be to cover up our mistake but sometimes the cheating may be not to cover up a mistake it might be just to get greater gain it’s not that I have committed a mistake but yes if I can do some corruption it’s not that there is some mistake I have committed but if I do some corruption I will get greater gain so I cheat so in that sense yes there is one way in which we can understand the four defects as progressive I wouldn’t use the word hierarchical it is not that this defect is greater than the other defect but it’s progressive it can be one way progressive that’s one way of understanding it but that’s not the only way the defects can cause us to be put in illusion even when we are even when the previous factors are not necessarily present I have not committed a mistake still I may cheat but this progressive way of understanding it you could imagine that there is a door with there is a passageway where there are four doors and each of the doors suppose they are not just like doors that open one way they are doors that open from the middle so each of the doors is very slightly open and then if I am going to look through the four doors because the first door is slightly open what I can see is very little the second door is also slightly open so what I can see becomes further reduced and by that if I am going to see through four doors which are only open like slits that at the end what I will be able to see will be very limited so the essential point is rather than going into a hair splitting analysis about the four defects and their mutual causality the important point is to recognize that our perception is limited and that’s why we need to rely on divine intelligence in order to be able to get complete knowledge especially about the transcendental realm so the purpose of the four defects is most important to understand and the progression is one way to understand how they may function but that’s not necessarily the only way Thank you. So Gopi’s separation from Krishna.
