Hare Krishna So I welcome all of you to today On the supremely sacred day Of Shri Gaur Purnima I am honoured And humbled to be here At the lotus feet of Shri Radha Madhav Hari And I will speak Today on One aspect of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s Life The theme will be Lord Chaitanya Demonstrated that the Heart is higher than the Head Biologically speaking, the head is Higher than the heart Spiritually speaking, the heart Is higher than the head And how Lord Chaitanya demonstrated that That is what we will discuss Today Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Supreme Lord Shri Krishna Descended into this world In this age of Kali Kali Yuga He designs to Purify this Kali Yuga and to Free us from the fear Of this dark age Now if you consider The Contemporary history People may say Oh actually The world has never been better We have so much scientific, technological Other kinds of progress So If we see the Vedic perspective It says that this is the darkest of all ages Why such a big difference? The difference In perspective is because of The frame of reference Now if you just look at Externals, yes in terms of Technological wizardry we have Much more than what was present in the recent history In the past But In terms of inner well-being In terms of mental peace In terms of Meaning and satisfaction in life We have rarely been As bankrupt As we are in today’s times Mental health issues Are far far More afflicting to people Than physical Health issues Because no matter how Troubled people physically are Very rarely do people consider Giving up their life by committing suicide When people are mentally troubled Then they May get arrested Not just one, two, thousands, millions People just end their lives So if you look in terms of inner well-being We have a situation In this age where people Are comfortable And miserable They are physically Comfortable But internally they are miserable So this is the Predicament where we think that we are Progressing But actually in terms of things that really matter In terms of things that really Bring happiness to our heart We are not progressing, we are actually regressing So the problem is The mind is very disturbed And Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Comes to tell us Where our mind can find Shelter So Krishna is the supreme lord And he descends Sambhavami yuge yuge He comes again and again In every millennia For establishing Dharma Paritranaya sadhunam vinashaya Jadushkunam dharmasamstha Panarthaya Sambhavami yuge yuge 4.8 Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita That he descends To establish Dharma To remove the miscreants And to re-establish To re-empower The virtuous In Kali Yuga If we consider Almost everyone is a miscreant And therefore When the lord descends in this age He descends With a special mission Not to destroy the miscreants But to destroy The miscreant mentality He comes Specially to purify The hearts of people And in the scriptures There are basically Two means described For bringing about Well-being in society There is Shastra And there is Shastra Shastra is wellness And Shastra is scripture So Shastra Is used By the Kshatriyas They use weapons to Crush those who are The law-breakers, those who are the demoniacs And Shastra Is used by the Brahmins, the intellectuals And they use it To defeat people’s misconceptions Defeat people’s illusions And by an age to eliminate people So if we see most Of the previous incarnations of the lord That is Ram or Krishna They Actually come And use Shastra Primarily, they come as Kshatriyas And they fight and destroy the miscreants Chaitanya Mahaprabhu comes in Kali Yuga and because everyone is a miscreant He comes not As a Kshatriya, he comes as a Brahmin Now Brahmana is not by birth Brahmana is by virtues By qualities And he comes in a Brahmin family In Navadvip Mayapur In Bengal 500 years ago And there The Brahmanas Are considered to be very learned And they are expected to Acquire learning And at that time Navadvip The place where Shaitanya Mahaprabhu descended Was actually the headquarters Of Of learning in India And there Shaitanya Mahaprabhu He descended On this particular day he was born And soon just by the age of 40 He became a fearless scholar Who was fearless In front of the greatest scholars And at that time One of the greatest Pandits of all of India Keshav Kashmir Who was known as Digvijay Who had conquered all directions He came to Navadvip and he wanted to challenge All the Pandits In Navadvip and defeat them And he had been blessed by Saraswati Devi That he would always be Victorious whenever he would speak And contemplating the Prospect of facing Keshav Kashmiri All the Brahmanas The learned elite Of Navadvip became fearful And most of them Just left They left Navadvip to go elsewhere And then When Shaitanya Mahaprabhu Who was just a 14 year old At that time Nowadays we hear of precocious children Sometimes the children get a PhD at the level of At the age of 15 or 16 or 17 Such a brilliant child Shaitanya Mahaprabhu At the age of 14 and not only Had got the equivalent of PhD He had started his own PhD college And he was a teacher over there At the age of 14 He had his own students who were older than him And he was teaching there And when he was a small child He was known as Nimai Now he came to be known as Nimai Pandit And he was a great scholar Pandit as the epithet suggests And then Nimai Pandit Met Keshav Kashmiri When Keshav Kashmiri had come to the Banks of the Ganga to bathe over there And Nimai Pandit was sitting With his students Discussing Various principles of grammar And at that time Keshav Kashmiri Saw who is this effulgent looking young boy It was intriguing their sight That this young boy was sitting Not in the role of a student But he was sitting in the role of a teacher Surrounded by many others And then he came closer And Nimai Pandit saw him And in terms of Age, in terms of position Keshav Kashmiri was much elder and more respected So he offered his respects He invited him to come and sit Right in the centre with him And he said, Oh learned Pandit You are such a great scholar Please enlighten us by Describing some glories of Ganga daily And Keshav Kashmiri Was so brilliant that On the spur of the moment he composed 100 extemper verses And glorified Ganga And all the students of Nimai Pandit Mouths fell open in astonishment Such a learning For most of us Even if we memorise one verse And recite it again is difficult 100 verses to recite And not just recite but to compose and recite on the spur of the moment Such a phenomenal learning And After he finished Nimai Pandit had his own plan And he said, Oh Oh Pandit We are all actually studying grammar So please Now that you have composed such phenomenal poetry Can you do a grammatical review Of your poetry Please tell the plus points Please tell the virtues And please tell the faults of your Composition from a grammatical perspective Normally If say In today’s world there is sports Somebody says champion performance And after that somebody comes And please tell us the faults of your performance He is taken aback There are no faults in my poetry No no no Don’t get like the waves of Ganga So Nimai Pandit Was very humble He said by the mercy of Lord Krishna One person can recite 100 verses on the spur of the moment By this mercy The same Lord Krishna Another person Can remember whatever verses they know So here he was subtly shifting the focus In the heart of Keshav Kashmir Don’t be so proud It is not you It is the mercy of Krishna And then After that He said You have composed this verse And he said he started pointing out various Faults from the grammatical literary Poetic perspective He said you have said that Actually You have referred to Lord Shiva as Bhavani Bhartu Now Bhava refers to Lord Shiva Bhavani refers to the wife of Lord Shiva And Bhartu is the husband So you have said that You are talking about the husband of the wife of Lord Shiva Now what does this mean Are you implying That Parvati Devi is unchaste And she has some husband other than Lord Shiva So now Keshav Kashmir was stunned He tried to speak something in defence He just couldn’t speak And he couldn’t speak At that time Nimaya Pandit’s students started laughing And They just thought such a great scholar Has been defeated now And Nimaya Pandit was so sensitive Stop don’t laugh And he very respectfully turned to the Pandit And he said It has been a long day for you You must be tired You have done this phenomenal feat of scholarship Composed this poetry So you can go and rest Study your books And you can come back tomorrow And continue the discussion So now everybody understood That Keshav Kashmir had been defeated But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s point was That he wanted to Free Keshav Kashmir From his pride But he did not want to Dishonour it Sometimes When we are debating something with someone Our point is When there is a debate Sometimes we have philosophical discussions And there can be debates about what is right But when The debate’s focus shifts from What is right to who is right Then Immediately people’s ego comes into the picture So if I am having a discussion with someone And I say This is my point, this is your point What is the right point? If we keep it objective Then the discussion can go on rationally But as soon as We make it personal From what is right to who is right We make it a confrontation between us and them Then as soon as The ego comes in the middle You cannot convince people Like I said A man convinced against his will Is of the same Opinion still Is of the same opinion still So Jaitanya Mahaprabhu was a very expert He did not dishonour Keshav Kashmir He allowed him a graceful way out Go home and Go home and Study your books Now Keshav Kashmir went back home and was crying In tears, was defeated It’s like Just to give you a rough example Say there is in tennis There is a person who is a multiple Grand slam champion And in just a qualifying Match or a first round match Some player who no one has heard about That person comes and defeats him It’s a big upset And the player who is upset is naturally upset So Keshav Kashmir was not just upset He was devastated And he went back and fell at the feet of Mother Saraswati and started praying to her You have promised me That no man will ever be able to defeat me That no human being Will be able to defeat me How was it I was defeated? Please, I beg you, tell me And crying like this He fell asleep And that night Saraswati Devi came And hugged me And she told him, O Pandit Yada Madhavani Bhagwan ki Jai So she started She said Why are you so upset, O Pandit? He said, you have promised me That I will not be defeated Of any human being She said, know that the person who Defeated you was not Any human being He was the master Of my master My master is Brahma Brahma’s master is Ultimately Krishna And that same Krishna descended over you He said that My blessing to you The perfect blessing The perfection of my blessing To you is not That you become the greatest scholar in the world Throughout history At all times there has been Some other person who has been The greatest scholar What has happened? What did their scholarship achieve? They got some fame And after that they died And they continued on in the cycle of birth and death She said, my perfect blessing to you The greatest blessing that I can offer to you Is to Help you connect With the lord who can take us Beyond all misery Who can take us beyond the cycle of birth and death She said, that lord Has descended as Nimai Pandit Use your intelligence The perfection of your intelligence Is to surrender to that lord When Kishore Kashmiri heard this He next morning Woke up, came out of his dream He found it to become morning He got up and he rushed Rushed To the place where Nimai Pandit was there And he fell at his feet And he told the dream that he had seen What Shalsoopini had told Kishore Please Accept me as your servant So Nimai Pandit was very humble He said, okay Kishore Kashmiri You are a great Pandit Your scholarship Is extraordinary But let the scholarship Take you towards god Let it not take you away from god Use it To not spread the glories Of your own intelligence Use your scholarship To spread the glories of lord Krishna And being that instructed And blessed by Kishore By Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Kishore Kashmiri departed He went on to become a great Vaishnava Who wrote many scholarly Commentaries on various Scriptures including The Srimad Bhagavatam Chaitanya Mahaprabhu here By defeating this great scholar Demonstrated how great A scholar he himself was And At the age of 20, this was at the age of 14 At the age of 20 By this time he had become Such a powerful scholar After his defeat of Kishore Kashmiri He became even more famous And his fame spread far and wide He travelled to different places And his scholarship His scholarship spread all the more Bhaktivinoda Thakur Talks about his With the pride of my learning I travelled to place after place And In this way I became famous I became prosperous But at the age of 20 There was a great transformation In the life of Nimai Pandit He met his spiritual master He met Ishwara Puri And seeing the simplicity Seeing the spirituality, seeing the pure emotion Of Ishwara Puri Nimai Pandit manifested to the world That there is something Higher than scholarship That higher thing is Devotion And that Ishwara Puri has something Which I do not have And I want it from him He fell at the feet of Ishwara Puri And Ishwara Puri, he met him in Mayapur first and then he went to Gaya And Gaya There, that is the place Where Buddha Is said to have attained enlightenment Gautama became Buddha At that place Shachan Mahaprabhu went And he demonstrated what is the Ultimate enlightenment The Buddhistic enlightenment Is the enlightenment of understanding That this world is a place of misery Asahi paramam dukkham Nairasya paramam sukham The desire is the cause of misery Therefore if you become desireless, you become free from misery That is One half of enlightenment The other half of enlightenment Is what She Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Demonstrated. Bhagavad Gita Krishna Talks of the same word Buddha, same root Same cognate And he says Aham sarvasya prabhavo Mattah sarvam pravardhate Itimattva bhajante mam Buddha bhavasam anvitaham He says that those who understand me To be the supreme They become devoted to me Wholeheartedly, they become Buddha They become Completely enlightened So the ultimate enlightenment is not just To understand that this world Is a place of temporariness Is a place of misery The ultimate enlightenment is to understand That beyond this world There is a world where there is Eternal happiness, where there is Eternal shelter And the Lord of that world Is inviting us to Him And that Lord descends To this world The descent of the divine Is for the purpose Of the ascent of the human The divine Descends from the spiritual world to this world To help raise the human Consciousness from this From the material level to the spiritual level So in today’s world Many people Are enamoured By the power of the human Intellect And the greatest manifestation Of human intellect in today’s world Is science and technology These have Transformed the world In ways that would have been inconceivable 50 years ago Just 50 years ago People would not have thought that just by pressing A few buttons on some small Device that can be held in our hand We can talk with anyone in any part of the world So this demonstrates The power of the human intelligence At the same time With the best of the human Intelligence There is something vital that is lacking Now Martin Luther King Said that we have guided Missiles and misguided Man Now we have the technology To guide the outer world But we do not have the knowledge We do not have the spirituality To guide our inner emotions To rise higher and become happier In our consciousness And that is why As I said in the beginning We are comfortable But we are comfortably miserable So the heart Needs fulfilment With the power of the head With the power of our rational intelligence We have developed technology Which enables us to Manipulate the outer world In mind-boggling ways But still The heart is empty The heart is longing For fulfilment And the heart cannot be Fulfilled by Acquiring better and better gadgets It cannot be fulfilled By getting better and better Control over the outer world The heart can be fulfilled Only through love And bhakti Is the process by which We connect our heart With the supreme object of love That supreme object of love Is Shri Krishna So when Shaitanya Mahaprabhu As Nimai Pandit He attained the pinnacle of scholarship But then When he started chanting the holy names When he started practising The process of bhakti yoga He told Gadadhar Pandit And other associates of his He says for so many years Of my life in pursuing Scholarship In pursuing mundane scholarship I have Wasted my time and my life Struggling to taste That which is tasteless Struggling to taste That which is tasteless So in material existence Is the audio Better now? Thank you Thank you So in trying to taste that which is tasteless I have wasted my life And Shaitanya Mahaprabhu Just gave his heart and soul To practising bhakti And sharing bhakti with everyone Now bhakti Sometimes some people say that Bhakti is actually simply sentimental It is for less intelligent people Shaitanya Mahaprabhu demonstrated How he was the most intelligent And still he practised bhakti The point is Bhakti is so inclusive That even people Who are not very intelligent They can just direct their heart to Krishna And experience life’s supreme Fulfilment So bhakti is so inclusive That even the less intelligent can practise it But bhakti is not only for the less intelligent In fact bhakti Is the culmination of all intelligence In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna says in 7.19 Bahunam janmanamante Jnanavanam prapadyate Vasudevas sarvamiti Samatmasudurlabha He says after many many Lifetimes of spiritual evolution Bahunam janmanamante After many such lifetimes Of growing in spiritual understanding Then what happens? Jnanavan A person becomes full of knowledge It’s like we have dhanavan Like that a person becomes Filled with knowledge And then what does a knowledgeable person do? Mam prapadyate Which a person surrenders unto me Which a person becomes my devotee So Krishna is saying here That the perfection of intelligence Is surrender And what is the understanding at that time? Vasudevas sarvamiti Which a person understands That God, the all-pervading Vasudev Is everything Sarvamiti Samatmasudurlabha Such a Mahatma Such a great soul Is very rare Samatmasudurlabha Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Demonstrates through his own life How after having The perfection of intelligence Of having defeated the greatest scholars Of his times He then Accepted the path of devotion As he showed that actually Beyond the head Lies the heart The heart has its own reasons That the head knows nothing about So our heart Longs for fulfilment And Krishna is the all-attractive Supreme In learning to love Krishna Our heart finds the supreme Fulfilment Chaitanya Mahaprabhu thereafter He travelled across the length and breadth Of India And he inspired hundreds and thousands of people Millions of people Just joyfully chant The holy names And experience life’s supreme ecstasy Simultaneously He travelled far and wide Met scholars And inspired them to take up the path of devotion He demonstrated Through his life That actually Whatever intelligence we have The purpose and perfection Of that intelligence Is to direct the heart properly When we direct Our heart properly Then our heart finds shelter It finds fulfilment So I will talk about one more pastime Of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu And then I will conclude with talking about Shri Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada When Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Came To Varanasi Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was travelling all over the world All over the country, India And he came to Varanasi At that point, there was a great scholar over there Who was the leader Of the monistic school of thought The monistic school of thought holds that Everything is one The Vaishnavas say yes, everything is one But in that oneness There is variety There is one absolute truth, God But God has his material energies and spiritual energies This monistic scholar Prakash His name was Prakash Anand Saraswati And he was considered a great Pandit And Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Came there and he was just joyfully Singing and dancing And experiencing ecstasy And enabling others to experience ecstasy And His logicians His monistic scholars This is what I am saying This is a sentimental person He doesn’t know anything better He can’t study Vedanta And that’s why he is just chanting and dancing And now Some of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s followers felt very hurt When they heard this They heard Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Being called a sentimental Then they arranged a meeting Between Prakash Anand Saraswati and Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu And Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was So humble All the sanyasis were sitting on an Exalted pedestal And he went and sat At the place where everyone was Washing their feet And there he started Exhibiting his Brahman effulgence There is Just like the sun Has a sunlight which is effulgence Which goes out from the sun So like that the absolute truth has Effulgence that goes out from him in all directions And the impersonalists The monists they are attracted to That effulgence But the devotees are attracted To the source of that effulgence The source of the effulgence Is called as Brahman, Brahma Jyoti And the source of that effulgence Is the all attractive person That is Bhagwan Shri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the manifestation of that Bhagwan Shri Krishna And he started manifesting That effulgence And as that effulgence started coming out Of his body The impersonalists, the monists are attracted to This effulgence And they said oh Who is this person who is so effulgent They immediately said oh Mahasaya Oh respectable one, why are you sitting over there Please come and sit with us And Prakashanth got up and he personally lifted Chaitanya Mahaprabhu He lifted him up and brought him To the Elevated pedestal Elevated seat and he sat him there In this way unknowingly Prakashanth Saraswati Did some Seva He served Lord Chaitanya Actually In the spiritual path Understanding Doesn’t come only by analysis Understanding doesn’t come only by Studying or debating Understanding comes By mercy And mercy is received When we perform service Sevonmukhehi jivadhau Svayameva sphuratyadhau When we render service Starting with our tongue We chant the holy names, we take prasad as we will soon When we do this It’s a service When we serve Krishna Then understanding arises as an epiphany from within Svayameva sphuratyadhau It automatically manifests So Chaitanya Mahaprabhu By sitting over there And having Prakashanth Saraswati lift him up He got him to perform service And then They started discussing They started Discussing at that time He said why are you Instead of studying and discussing Vedanta With our scholars Why are you dancing and singing on the streets Chaitanya Mahaprabhu So humbly said Actually my spiritual master told me That As soon as I chant the holy names of Krishna Tears come from my eyes So he said therefore he said There is no need for you to study Vedanta Just chant the holy names And Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said That is why I am following the instruction of my spiritual master So on hearing this Prakashanth Saraswati was impressed He is so submissive to his spiritual master That is good to have tears of ecstasy But then we should be able to discuss Vedanta We are sannyasis, sannyasis should be a scholar And They started discussing And when they started discussing Chaitanya Mahaprabhu exhibited such Phenomenal scholarship That at that time Prakashanth Saraswati understood for the first time What is Prakash What is Ananda and what is Saraswati He said understand My God Vedanta could be understood in this way That there is a personal All attractive absolute And he became completely Transformed He from a monist became a devotee Totally surrendered He Surrendered to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Bhaktivinoda Thakur One of the prominent followers of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Has composed 100 names Gaurangashatana And in that he describes The victory Of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu In this particular incident So you can kindly repeat after me Kashiwasi sannyasi Kashi Kashiwasi sannyasi uddhari Kashiwasi sannyasi uddhari Parapremdata Parapremdata Premdata So Kashiwasi sannyasi Sannyasi was residing in Kashi And uddhari Chaitanya Mahaprabhu delivered him And now normally sannyasis are already considered liberated So how can the liberated be delivered They seem to be already delivered But actually He was liberated from material attachments But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu liberated him Into the realm of pure love Parapremdata Parapremdata Paraprem Supreme love He gave to him And when Prakashana Sastry understood this That actually Again that The highest manifestation of the intelligence Is to understand The source of that intelligence And to surrender to that source In this way he attained perfection So at that time This was a phenomenal Beat of scholarship Because To give a rough metaphor of this Its like say In cricket there is a big rivalry between India and Pakistan So say Indian team goes to Pakistan And defeats Pakistan in Pakistan Pakistan is the home territory for Pakistan So go and defeat over there its a great victory So Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Went to the headquarters of the monists That was Varanasi And there he defeated them And the defeat was not a defeat Of the ego It was a victory of the heart Because Prakashana Sastry heart was also elevated He was also liberated Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s mercy Is that he has given the holy name The holy name was revealed In the scriptures But many people thought he is chanting of the holy names This is just simple sentiment But Chaitanya Mahaprabhu revealed The whole theology behind the holy name And he revealed How the chanting of the holy name The practise of bhakti Is the perfection of intelligence It is Ultimately With all the intelligence that we have What are we looking for? We are looking for happiness And happiness is found In the reciprocation of love Happiness is found In learning to love And be loved We all have various relationships in this world These relationships can offer us Some shelter Ultimately our heart longs for a lasting love The object of lasting love Is the lasting Lord of our heart Krishna resides in our own heart And in our heart He often invites us From there Turn towards me Offer your love to me Therein you will find supreme perfection Chaitanya Mahaprabhu demonstrates this And he teaches this He demonstrates Through his life How beyond the head Lies the heart How he who was the topmost scholar Went beyond scholarship to the moksha And similarly He offers us the path of bhakti This path of bhakti Bhakti is the path Which takes us beyond the intelligence To the heart And the heart’s love So Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Predicted 500 years ago That in every town and village Of the world Prithvite achiyata nagarati Gramme sarvatra vachara Hobe mora naam In every town and village The holy name of Krishna will be chanted And For several hundred years After Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s departure The chanting of the holy name Was done mostly in Bengal And the message That Lord Chaitanya had given That seemed to be just relegated To the status of a Bengali Religious sub-sect But then The Senapati bhakta The great commander of the army Of Lord Chaitanya Shri A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Shri Prabhupada He came to this world And He had the vision and the vision To share The message of Lord Chaitanya on the world At the advanced age Of 70 When most people Think of retiring Shri Prabhupada left the abode Of spiritual retirement That is Vrindavan And he came to America Actually to say that Shri Prabhupada Left Vrindavan and came to America Is a superficial understanding Prabhupada did not leave Vrindavan To come to America He brought Vrindavan with him to America The pure devotee May leave The holy abode But the holy abode Vrindavan never leaves the pure devotee It resides in their heart And Shri Prabhupada Wherever he went in the last 11 years of his life He circumnavigated the globe 14 times And wherever he went He brought a flood of love of God He created He replicated the ecstasy That Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Had propagated all over India And he spread it all over the world It is by the mercy of Shri Prabhupada That today We are celebrating Gaurav Mohan Maharshi The abode of Shri Radha Madhav Hari Is a Manifestation of Vrindavan Here In Arizona, Incheon and Phoenix And that Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descended 500 years ago His descent is not a historical event It is historical But it is not just a historical event It is a transcendental event Which Is meant to be repeated In our own hearts So in a few minutes from now We will have a darshan of Lord Chaitanya And Soon the moon will be rising At the moment of moon rise Lord Chaitanya descended to this world And That Same event of Lord Chaitanya Descending To the world which happened About 540 years ago 530 years ago That same event is meant to happen In our heart.
