By engaging our material nature in bhakti are we constructing our spiritual nature or reviving it?
So if we have certain instincts right now, are they a part of our body mind? Their acquired nature or if say I have attraction for music, is it coming from my body and mind or is it coming from the soul which has attracted to Krishna by singing? So are we trying to construct our spiritual nature or are we trying to revive it? So in general like I said earlier, where something comes from is not as easy to know as where something is taking us. So if I have an inclination to study Shastra. Now is that inclination coming from my condition body and mind which is like to read books and Shastra happens to be a book which is nice so I am reading it.
Or is it my soul is attracted towards Krishna and Shastra is a book about Krishna. That’s why I am attracted towards Krishna. It could be both.
Generally it’s a progression. Usually it’s our conditioned nature which is what we use in Krishna’s service. A Brahmana likes to read books.
Give them books about scripture, philosophy, they will read that also. But gradually as somebody keeps serving Krishna according to their nature, then they start realizing you know this book is intellectually stimulating, it is about Krishna. This book is also intellectually stimulating but it is not about Krishna.
But in this book I get some taste which I don’t get over here. Although both are equally intellectually stimulating, but here I experience something which I don’t experience over there. And then gradually the Krishna element starts becoming prominent.
Some people may just like to sing. And they come to a temple, they will sing Krishna bhajans. They go to a party, they will sing Bollywood songs.
For them it is singing that is important. What they are singing doesn’t matter to them. But if they come in the association of devotees and they sing about Krishna, after a period they will recognize that singing about Krishna is something special.
And when they see that, then gradually the focus will be not just on the activity that I do according to my nature, but the purpose for which I am doing that activity. And thus, our nature will be the channel by which we move towards Krishna. Earlier, basically, we wanted to stay at the level of my nature.
I want to sing, whether it is mundane songs or devotional songs. But when I sing devotional songs regularly, then I start developing a taste for Krishna. And then gradually I become situated more and more in Krishna.
And then the attraction to Krishna becomes not just because of my psychophysical nature, but because of the soul’s nature to serve Krishna. So, it’s both a channelization of what we have right now, as well as an activation of what is the soul’s eternal constitutional position to love and serve Krishna. It’s very difficult at our stage to know what is what.
The soul and its innate nature is practically unknowable for us. So, we don’t worry too much about whether it’s coming from the soul or it’s coming from the body-mind. Focus on where it is taking us.
And eventually, the soul’s nature of loving Krishna will be activated.
