Bhagavatam tenth canto study 14 – 10.3.1-10 The celestial, terrestrial and psychological characteristics that celebrate the Lord’s appearance
Thank you very much.
Hare Krishna Srimad bhagavatam canto 10 chapter 3 text 1 this is text is the appearance of lord krishna In the previous chapter It has been described how the devatas offered prayers to krishna now it is Jal A series of five verses which are put together over here and these verses talk about the magnificence of krishna’s appearance The magnificence in terms of how all of nature arranged To Ready itself By aligning In auspicious marks In auspicious signs The point is that every one of us We all take birth sometime or the other and In the vedic context it is understood that the circumstances of our appear of our birth in this world they indicate something about The kind of karma that we have in done in the past And indicate some broadly the trajectory that our life is going to go through So With all qualities The time became supremely attractive with all attractive qualities So So So at that time krishna appeared in this world And All Stars and all planets in other constellations. They lost whatever they became shanta. They became pacified So actually Now there are eight verses which describe the conditions and after that it is described krishna appeared so So idea is that All this is a description for krishna’s appearance.
Sometimes in english. We may have very long sentences and All those long sentences are describing one particular object So similarly here One object is described through all those sentences It’s time became shobha is beauty shobhana is beautiful or splendid Now today we think of time simply as One of the units that we use for measurement in the cosmos And of course we may say that Some times are more attractive than others Some seasons are more attractive than others but ultimately It is not just a matter of seasons It’s a matter of It is the time itself is a cosmic Manifestation of the divine And when the divine himself is manifesting Then the time itself Also manifests in an extremely attractive way The whole idea is that If we want to look at or the auspicious and auspicious from the point of view of astrology then krishna’s appearance is supremely auspicious He is the supreme and his appearance is supremely auspicious So text two So So all the directions became joyful sometimes Some seasons themselves they create such an upbeat mood Sometimes when the sky is cloudy At that time we start feeling glum depressed Sometimes the weather is sunny at that time. We also feel uplifted So certain Weather certain atmosphere has a strong effect on our moods So the sky was bright with stars interesting Krishna appeared at night Not in the daytime So there’s a significance to that That krishna appears as per his own plan And he also appears in a way that his leela can move on And for his devotees to be able to perform the leela of hiding him Night time was the best So that light although it was night In the night, there’s beautiful stars in the sky and Mahi is the earth The earth became auspicious What happened then? It’s amazing That you know minds They give wealth from within the earth So there are certain areas on the earth Where wealth is abundantly available And certain areas where wealth may not be that easily available so If wealth becomes available Where it is not normally available that indicates something special So this is what happened by krishna’s appearance That even the ordinary thing Came there Even the ordinary places became So beautiful that it was amazing It was extremely an attractive sight and so So here Rivers had clear waters Hada jala ruha shriya That jala ruha, that is lotuses which are born in water the lakes will fill with lotuses the Vaishnava Tosini says that actually here for the purpose of poetic description poetic symmetry It is said that the rivers had clear water and the lakes had lotuses But actually both had it there The rivers and lakes both had clear water and both had lotuses And So the forests had beautiful flowers within them And flowers produce and then there was bird which is singing very very cheerfully All of nature became happy when krishna is about to appear If you look at the series of descriptions First of the generic description of the earth And first actually the first verse described the cosmos Then there’s a broad description of the earth.
Now there is specific description of features within the earth So there is a description of the forest the lakes the rivers And in this way There is a description of how everything became auspicious because of krishna’s appearance Um Now specific manifestations within nature are described That the by you that was flowing that Was so pleasing sometimes It’s very hot and wind starts blowing the wind is so pleasing to see to feel to touch suppose it’s hot and then we get a Good nice pleasant wind. So it was like that It would become very sukha sparsha. It was very pleasing to touch So it was very auspicious and not only was it pleasing to touch but also pleasing with the fragrance So sukha sparsha pleasing to touch and very sweet fragrance to it Krishna uses the same word punya gandha together in the bhagavad-gita.
He says i am the The fragrance of the earth So here shuchihi, clean it was So it has clean cool air And even the fire had become pleasant similarly So What does it mean You know fire can blaze sometimes so hot That it becomes unbearable you start moving away from the fire Or sometimes it’s a little cold around us and there’s a fire is very cozy and comforting So it was something like that and shantastatrasamindatam Like the fire had almost got extinguished in the fire sacrificial pits of the brahmanas, but it started again That is the beauty of the fire What it means is Now In the sacrificial fire yajna sometimes in the tradition it was that the brahmanas would keep the Fire on throughout the day and some throughout the night or at least a particular auspicious times the fire was meant to be there always so if that fire goes off It indicates that It is not at all a pleasant thing It is not an auspicious thing but here the fire that is so in the mahabharata it is described that when The Kauravas were committing atrocities and travesties of justice against the Pandavas Vidura told Dhritarashtra that his sacrificial fire which he attended to throughout his life had got extinguished And that was such a grave and auspicious sign That then Dhritarashtra felt that I have to put my foot down That’s how he put his foot down so now So the fire going off is considered auspicious or the fire that is going off turning on is considered extremely auspicious So So The mind became cheerful joyful whose minds The minds of the sadhu the saintly people They had become a little troubled because of the activities of the demons but Those minds became very cheerful sometimes Yeah When we have some problems, we have some problem people in our life Then we feel very troubled by those people And we don’t know what to do about them So there’s a burden on our head and our heart but when The lord appears the devotees were in similar condition of being burdened by the atrocities of the demons suddenly they felt uplifted Jaya Mane Jane Tasmin And so Jaya Mane Jane Tasmin. So this is the first line or the first Time the description is coming that the lord is going to appear All that was describing previously described previously is all actually building up to the appearance of the lord But that specific description that he is going to appear is mentioned over here Jaya Mane Jane And that lord Ajane so Jaya Mane Ajane it is That lord who is never to be born. He takes birth He’s unborn.
He’s transcendentally exists outside the domain of time He doesn’t have to take birth, but he takes birth here. Jaya Mane Ajane Tasmin So the unborn lord took was about to appear at that time So at that time the drums started blowing on their own In the mahabharata it is in the especially the bhagavad-gita started is described that actually the drums started blowing Or drums were blown before the kurukshetra war the drums normally don’t blow on their own they have to be blown But in this case, they started blowing on their own. This is the wonder of the appearance of krishna So now How How did this happen that means that actually nature itself was arranging to Nature was arranging through some natural And some supernatural phenomena to welcome the appearance of its lord So the natural phenomena was all the natural phenomena became very auspicious looking but even the Unnatural or not supernatural also became very auspicious supernatural means that those which were Are not normally to happen Yes, we could say that Fragrant wind blowing.
It’s all pleasant But drums blowing on their own. It’s not pleasant. It’s it’s it’s astonishing It’s astonishing how does it happen it happens because we at our closest are Hmm Ultimately Parts of the lord and he is supreme and all of nature Works under his control by his will So now it’s described that higher beings are also celebrating Jaggu So They all They all started celebrating in their own world Jaggu started singing Means they started offering prayers started offering prayers To please that lord was going to appear the vidyadhara started They started dancing And along with the apsara they started dancing nuda very joyfully they were all dancing Hmm Um, actually the whole point is that the terrestrial celestial all realms were celebrating and Such is the magnificence of the lord’s appearance Next seven and eight Jaaya Is flowers So the sages and the gods He started showering flowers with a joyful heart mudanvithaha Actually the whole bhagavatam the tenth canto Sanskrit itself was also so sweet Gentle gentle the gently gently the Clouds were rumbling Thunder is generally considered a very loud and alarming Rumble is gentle And sometimes when the water is moving sometimes when people are very disturbed They get the music they get a recording of the river water flowing So if the river water is flowing gently It creates a very soothing sound and that can pacify the mind So just that sound of the river water flowing is very soothing here to describe that The sky itself was very the sky the clouds movement was also very soothing Hmm So actually this world is kuntha.
It’s a place of anxiety And we all need to get out of this world of anxiety and we all want to be freedom from this anxiety So, how do we get it? The lord is kuntha. He is the lord of the abode which is free from anxiety and he himself is free from anxiety So when he descends into this world Nature also starts arranging itself in such a way that We get not anxiety, but serenity Great peace great joy So at that time What happened at that particular time the lord That lord who is a protector of all living beings he appeared Unto the womb of devaki he appeared And how did he appear in the womb of devaki? She was not any ordinary being Actually Even her form was divine because that form was receiving the form of the lord And what was the need for that form to be divine because Vishnu That Vishnu who is situated in the hearts of all living beings He appeared so we have the word avirbhaav avirbhaav means appearance So similarly Means the like we have purva pashyam so prachyam is In pashyam, it’s the eastern direction so now There’s a It’s like the full moon appears so the lord himself appeared that like that so that lord who is transcendental He appeared And At night when it is completely dark Tama can refer to ignorance it can refer to darkness. So it is completely dark In the cellars in the place where devaki was there the lord appeared So it’s interesting The point being made over here is that just as the moon appears the moon continues to exist Even when it is not seen by us It continues to exist but it becomes seen by us later when we get to When it appears in front of our eyes so like that the lord is always existing but he appears at a particular time So just as the moon appears he appeared The lord appeared in his full opulence he is Hmm He is the one and complete being No, even his potencies are not visible with him.
They are still with him And when he wants they will manifest when he wants they will become unmanifest but that supreme lord Who is the heart of living beings now appeared? Through devaki So what devatas had told devaki that now your grief is over So now is the time for you to celebrate uh, so So your lord is going to appear now. So that happened here So actually now here How those things move on text 9 and 10 describe the characteristics So vasudev saw this when the lord appeared at that time what happened? the lord appeared Um So now in the harivamsa it is said that the lord appeared a little early normally The child is born in 9th or 10th month. Of course, babies don’t necessarily come according to a timetable They may come a little before also sometimes The labor starts before and I becomes acute so either way here krishna it is said he appeared in the eighth month of the pregnancy So the idea is that he appeared in the eighth month.
So kamsa was thinking there’s some time for the pregnancy to take place But it happened before And what did the vasudev who was there with devaki? What did he see? Vasudev saw this child When the lord appears in this world He gives us the vision to see him with our eyes Or he becomes visible to our eyes Aikshata The purpose and perfection of our eyes is to behold the attractive form of our lord That’s what vasudev saw over here Aikshata He was virochamanam. He was beautifully decorated So let’s look at this verse from the beginning What exactly is happening over here? How is this child so beautiful? Tamad bhutam balakam Tamad bhutam balakam Astonishing child So adbhutam and balakam is rhyming, but the rhyme goes on more also So the um sound is being repeated His eyes are like lotus petals So krishna is normally two-handed But to demonstrate to the world that he is not an ordinary child that he’s a divine child He first manifested in the four-handed form He was having shankha gadadi shankha chakra gadapadma. These are the characteristics of lord vishnu Whenever he had udayudham So he had all these ayudha, all these paraphernalia with him Srivatsa lakshmam And he had the characteristic of shrivatsa It is a white hair that runs across the chest of vishnu And it is only on his chest Now, it’s interesting normally if people Have their hair starts turning white They they become alarmed.
They say oh this indicates i’m growing old and I don’t want to grow old so they try to often dye their hair into A black color so that they will look younger than what they actually are but here it is said that The lord Srivatsa lakshmam He has a strip of white hair and that is only and that is a mark which belongs only to him that represents lakshmi devi And that is that enhances his beauty. He looks extraordinarily beautiful because of this This is whole verse is so beautiful it is describing The transcendental beauty of the lord So Gala and his neck was Is decorating the Kaustubha jewel So it is the jewel which is in Vaikuntha which is worn Especially by Vishnu So the vishnu purana other literature describe the beautiful form of Vishnu and there they repeatedly refer to these characteristics so The lord is demonstrating that Actually, although he is going to play baal lila which is going to be deceptively and endearingly simple And he just seems like a small child, but he’s still that supreme being that is being stressed over here His garments were yellow So So what happened was that actually Newly formed blackish clouds with a black with a bluish black hue that is there. That was his complexion It is very very attractive So Vaidurya jewels are very precious.
So he was having the vaidurya jewels along with He had actually He has studded with his helmet and ear rings. Actually he was wearing a crown and earrings So So he was looking very beautiful with his hair was also grown So krishna is no ordinary child no children do not come born with clothes or with Ornaments or with hair, but he was no ordinary child So he was fully decorated He had a belt on his waist. He had armbands.
He had bracelets In this way in every way to describe that this description justify that he is He was not an ordinary child at all he was extremely Extraordinary child he appeared displaying his full opulence when he came to this world and Beholding this
