Should we try to remove the corruption or should we rise beyond it? I mentioned both.
I mentioned first that whatever appears on the inner screen, we distance ourselves from it. And second is, we change what appears on the inner screen. Changing what appears on the inner screen, refers to removing the corruption in the software.
So if my software is corrupted right now, and the corrupt software is opening up, press this button, press this button, press this button, press this button. But the more we keep doing what the software is prompting us to do, the more it will damage my computer, our computer. So the first thing we have to do is, this corrupt software is running, I don’t have to run with it.
So I don’t have to give my consent for it to go on. So the first step is when these destructive emotions, negative emotions start coming within us, we distance ourselves. And then of course, we need an antivirus software by which we could remove that corrupt software from our system.
So that’s what, in spirituality, you could say there are two distinct phases. One is elevation, the other is purification. Elevation means we raise our consciousness above the world and its situations.
The second is purification, means whatever appears on the inner screen, that itself changes. So that could be done through conscious effort. That means, say, if a particular thought starts coming in, say you start getting angry, you start feeling fearful, then at that time, we take a deep breath, we calm ourselves.
What exactly is the problem? Let me look at the problem. Then we separate the imagination from the situation. And we can change that.
So this can be done with conscious effort, try to change the corruption. But it can happen at a subconscious level also. As we develop healthier habits, as we grow spiritually, the unwanted stimuli start coming lesser on our inner screen.
The mind is in many ways like a software. So, if on my computer browser, I have visited a particular site repeatedly, say, if I have visited sports.com repeatedly, so as soon as I open my browser and I type S, immediately it gives an auto-complete, sports.com. Say now, say today you came for a spiritual talk, I want to know a little bit more about spirituality. So you go back to your home, and then you go and open your computer, and you type spirituality.
When you type S, P, what happens? You use sports.com. You want to go to spirituality, but it auto-completed as sports. Why? Because that’s the past pattern that is stored. But now, if you consciously type spirituality, and you visit spirituality.com a few times, and if you keep visiting it repeatedly, after some time, when you type S, P, what will happen is, the auto-completion is spirituality, not sports.
So similarly for us, in spiritual practices, we do both. First we understand that these emotions are not my emotions. It is coming as prompts within me.
I don’t have to act on them, I will process them. And gradually, as we become purified, then the unwanted emotions, unwanted negativities, will stop coming there. That’s how the corruption becomes corrected.
