Are we making things worse than they need to be? Gita 18.35
Are we making things worse than they need to be? Suppose, we find ourselves in a place with fading light. Naturally, we will open our eyes wider to see some way ahead, to find our way ahead.
If instead, we close our eyes tightly, we will be sabotaging ourselves. We commit such self-sabotage internally when we become resentful. Especially, such resentment occurs when we face reversals that come upon us for no apparent fault of ours.
Though we have taken reasonable care of our health, we are diagnosed with cancer. At such times, it’s understandable to feel resentful. But, when we let resentment grow unchecked, it makes our mind like a stuck record that keeps replaying one question, Why is this happening to me? And, given that we are finite beings living in a complex world, we may just find no reasonable answer to that question.
But, when the mind keeps repeating that question endlessly and pointlessly, then resentment keeps growing till it consumes our entire inner space. And, that’s how our inner eye closes amid the darkness of that reversal. And, we become blind to whatever options we still had in that dark situation also.
Pertinently, the Bhagavad Gita cautions that self-destructive thoughts such as ignorance, such as resentment, characterize stubbornly ignorant mentality. How can we avoid such self-defeating stubbornness? When the world becomes dark, how can we open our eyes wider, metaphorically speaking, by changing our inner question, not why is this happening to me, but now that this has happened to me, what can I do to make things better? If we consciously repeat this question to ourselves, we will gradually find some positive things we can do. Additionally, if we equip ourselves with Gita wisdom, we’ll know that things happen for a purpose, we’ll have that confidence.
Knowing that purpose may take some time to manifest, become manifest, we will diligently persevere in doing our part. And, through such perseverance, we will better realize our core spirituality and discover layers of resilience that we didn’t know we had. Thus, though the situation may have become worse, we will have become better for we will have discovered a better part of our nature.
Thus, if we strive to do the best we can amid reversals, we can find ways to make things better and more importantly to ourselves become better, make ourselves better. So, to summarize, when reversals darken the world around us, don’t let resentment close our eyes, strive to do the best we can and we can not just make things better, but also make ourselves better.
