Might nature be teaching us, to stop believing, that we humans alone matter on the earth? Over the last, few centuries, where we have had, technologically driven, progress, we have, indiscreetly disrupted, delicate ecological balances, and substantially altered the shape of the earth. Driving all this, activity, is the underlying belief, that we humans alone matter on the earth. We have believed that the earth is ours for the taking, if we just develop the necessary technological power, that, we can do with it whatever we want, that, all other living beings have to, make way for us, even if it means that they lose their habitats, or even their lives.
While we were, caught, in our own technological bubbles, living in a world of, tweets and streams, nature, has come bursting through, and all it took for nature, is one of its tiniest entities, a virus, that is so small, as to be invisible, even to bacteria, which are, themselves invisible to us. Such a virus, has brought even countries with, huge stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, down to its knees, cowering in fear. Might this, intrusion, by nature, into our, human world, be, a wake up call, a lesson for us, to, rethink our beliefs.
Indeed humanity, throughout history, has had, a much more, humble understanding of its relationship with nature. Wisdom texts like the Bhagavad Gita, tell us that the universe is a habitat, for all living beings, not just humans. In 14.4, it states, sarvayoni shu kaunteya, murtaya sambhavantiha, tasam brahmam yonir aham bija pradapita, that nature is a womb, in which the divine, impregnates, all living beings.
So, this, is, the idea that, we all, are meant to live cooperatively. The earth, is not just a stage for, us humans to brandish our, prowess and feats. It is, it is a habit, it is an arena for all living beings to live, within their natural quotas, as harmoniously as possible.
If we internalize such a vision, it can have both collective and individual benefits. We can, we can become more environmentally conscious, avoiding or minimizing, activities that take, a significant, ecological cost. And it’s easier to become environmentally conscious, if we become spiritually conscious, by, and find non-material enrichment in activities such as yoga and meditation.
By such enrichment, we can, we can collectively, decrease the materialistic activities that, increase our carbon footprint, and we can individually, become calmer, so that we can face life’s challenges, more maturely and effectively. Thank you.
