Are children punished for the sins of their parents?
Thank you. Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna.
Question. Are children punished for the sins of their parents? Answer. Every one of us suffers for our own sins.
So, it is not that the children suffer because of the sins of their parents, but rather, it is that the soul, who has done a particular kind of activity, is born in a particular family, wherein the soul gets the reactions for whatever activities that soul has done in the previous life. So, it may appear externally, that say, one person is born in a wealthy family, and another person is born in a debt-ridden family, where, say, the father has squandered all the wealth in alcoholism, and has got the family deeply entangled. But, in spite of all that, the point remains that, although from this life’s, this world’s perspective, it may seem that this child has done nothing, and has still got born in a debt-ridden, poverty-stricken family.
So, it may appear that the child is suffering the reactions of the sins done by the parents. But, it is, ultimately, that soul only has done something wrong in a previous lifetime, because of which, that soul is now born in this lifetime, and has to suffer certain reactions, which come through the medium of the parents. So, to whatever circumstance we get, some people get a good-looking body, some people get a not-so-good-looking body.
Why is the difference there? That is because of one’s own past karma. And the reactions come in the form of the bodily casing that we get. So, the bodily covering that we get, some people get a good bodily covering, some people get a bad bodily covering, not-so-good bodily covering.
Similarly, just as the bodily covering is one covering around us, there is a social covering in which the soul appears. The social covering is the family, friends, and the broader community in which, community, race, caste, religion, in which the soul is born. And through that, also, certain reactions come.
So, the family in which we are born, that is determined by the kind of karma that we have done in our previous lives. And so, through the family, we may get certain reactions. Now, the important point to recognize is that rather than blaming others or blaming ourselves, the important thing is to focus on rectifying things.
So, we can understand that, even if it is that I have got a lot of suffering because of my parents’ wrongdoings, still, the point is that I can, I have free will. And if I use my free will properly, I can improve my situation. I can make things better.
And we always have free will, and we are, in that sense, the makers of our destiny. So, the situation, the physical or the social situation in which we are born, the familial situation in which we are born, we may not be able to determine that, but we can determine what we make out of that situation. So, and especially, spirituality and the path of Bhakti Yoga can empower us by connecting us with God so that we can move onwards faster towards God and ultimately become free from whatever limiting circumstances might have been there.
And when we connect with God, we get a higher power. And by that higher power, that gives us greater confidence, greater wisdom, and we can make better choices. And even if we have been born in troublesome, difficult, distressing circumstances, we can grow beyond them.
And in fact, negative circumstances can act as impetuses, as spurs for our growth, for our spiritual growth, for our growth in wisdom, growth in love, growth in character. And in that way, even adversities can become opportunities. So, what we focus on is not on blaming others that because of your sins I am suffering.
We understand that I am suffering because of my own sins. And nimitta matra, we understand that others are instruments for giving us our own reactions. When arrow comes in our chest, we don’t blame the arrow.
We know that somebody else has shot the arrow. So, similarly, others may sometimes be instruments that causes distress, but they are like arrows. And who has sent those arrows? Their actions, their words are like arrows.
But we ourselves by our past misdeeds have shot those arrows. And that’s why we should avoid blaming others. And we focus on rectifying the situation in a way by which we ourselves can grow in our life and we can help others as much as possible according to our capacity to also grow.
Thank you. Question.
