Actually, everywhere women is treated as enjoying object. Please clear this concept because I think this is not right. Answer It is not just women but the whole of material existence and all the material bodies, whether male or female within the material existence are created for the soul’s attempt to enjoy independent of God.
And within this material existence, which is an arena, which is a facility for the soul to try to enjoy independently, the pleasure of sex is the highest. It is the most intoxicating and entangling for the conditioned soul. And it distracts the conditioned soul from the spiritual quest, the greatest.
So, the Vedic culture is based on a particular social model in which women and men live harmoniously by cooperating. And within that cooperation, because men are the, women play the role of homemakers and mothers and men play the role of providers, protectors and the movers in the social world, whereas men, women are more of the movers in the home world. So, within, so the scriptures are often directed towards the men.
So, the men are considered to be the leaders of the society and the leaders of their homes and the women and men, when they work together, then the family also goes cooperatively. So, that’s why the scriptures give directions which seem to be more from our perspective, male-centric. But the idea is, the scriptures very clearly point out to us that we are not the bodies, we are the souls.
And if we think of the scriptures to be male-centric, that means we have actually not understood the foundational teaching of the scriptures that we are not males or females. But after clarifying this understanding that we are neither male nor female, we are all souls who can enjoy best by cooperating with Krishna’s enjoyment, by serving Krishna and enjoy and relishing in his service. After describing this fundamental point, then the scriptures describe a certain code of conduct for individual and familial behavior by which we can enter into that spiritual world where we can enjoy eternally.
And for moving towards that spiritual level of consciousness, the most important thing is to stay focused on Krishna and to avoid distractions. So because this instruction is primarily focused on men, because it is understood that men will impart this instruction to the family members, the idea is that the society is like a train with Krishna as the engine, the Guru as the first bogey, the husband is the second bogey, the wife is the third bogey and the children are the subsequent bogeys. So they all move towards Krishna, towards the spiritual world.
So the idea is that the scriptures primarily give instruction to the Guru who is teaching the scripture, but primarily to the husband, to the men. And the men will subsequently impart to the women. So that’s why the scriptures talk from a point of view of what may seem to be male-centric, but they are beyond male and female, they are universal addressing the spiritual level.
So that is the ultimate audience, but the direct target audience, the specific target audience within the Vedic cultural context is the males. And because males can get distracted by females very easily, so males are warned that women have this potential for distracting women and that’s why one has to be cautious in dealing with them. So Vedic culture does talk about women as meant for enjoyment, as made for enjoyment, but it also says that ultimately the women are not women, they are souls and they are also searching for Krishna.
And both men and women should look at each other in such a way that they can help each other in moving towards Krishna. So if the men treat women in a cultured way, looking at them as mothers, Matajis, or as Vaishnavis, as fellow devotees on the spiritual track, then they can move forward towards Krishna in a steady and undistracted way. The idea is that both men and women are ultimately spiritual units and if they don’t get attracted to each other in a religious way, then they can both move towards Krishna.
But because the chance of getting attracted in a religious way is always there, that’s why the focus is on telling that women can be distractions. And actually the Bhagavatam elsewhere talks also, talks on a few occasions about how for a woman, a man can be a distraction. But in the Vedic cultural context, because men, because women would more or less live within the home, so women would not go around searching for men, whereas men had the greater capacity to go around searching for women.
So that’s why the primary warnings are given to men, not to women. Although sometimes the warnings to women are also given. That men can be distractions for you, and be careful.
So the idea is not to objectify women, but it is to rectify whatever distractions might come in our consciousness. And as far as movies is concerned, yes, it is true that today in movies, women are primarily depicted as objects of enjoyment. And the emphasis on sensuality is extremely high, and that tends to create an objectified perception of women.
Objectified means not seeing them as human beings, as persons, but as just bodies, objects meant for physical release for men’s sexual passions. And this sort of vision, whether it is because of the pre-existing obsession with sexuality that is there in the human psyche, or whether it is further aggravated through the external stimulation offered by the movies and the media, either way it is dangerous. And that’s why the Vedic scriptures urge us to be cautious.
And we need to be cautious to not provoke our own sexual passions by unnecessarily or inappropriately or excessively associating with the opposite sex, whether it is men with women or women with men. By seeking spiritual fulfillment through the remembrance of Krishna and devotional service to Krishna, we can become, we can minimize this enjoying mentality that is there within us, which makes us see women as objects for enjoyment, and then we can proceed undistracted in the spiritual path.
