As advanced spiritualists have no material desires, do they get no dreams while sleeping?

Do self-realized souls not get any dreams? Because dreams are meant to cater to our desires. And they have, pure devotees have, self-realized souls have no desires. So, that’s why they will not have any dreams at all.
That they are always in the transcendental state, in the turiya or samadhi state, even when they are dreaming. Answer. There are two different things which can get confused once the question is raised.
That there is the level of consciousness and there is the content of the consciousness. That means, so, from the analytical perspective, the Upanishads describe these four levels of consciousness in particular ways. So, for example, it is stated that, when the consciousness of the soul is rooted through the subtle body, through the gross body, to the gross outer world, that is the jagruti stage.
When the consciousness is rooted from the soul to the subtle body, but not to the gross body, that is the sattna stage. When the consciousness is withdrawn into itself, that is the sushupti state. And when the consciousness is directed towards spiritual reality, that is the samadhi stage.
So, when there are advanced devotees who are working in this, who are advanced spiritualists of any kind, they may be devotees or non-devotees, devotees or non-devotional yogis or whatever, actually speaking, their consciousness, is it in the samadhi stage always? Now we have to understand two different things again. It may be in the samadhi stage, but that does not mean that their consciousness is not rooted through the subtle mind and through the body. Because, especially devotees who want to serve Krishna in this world, their consciousness will be rooted through the body and the mind.
Through the mind and the body to the outer world, because it is the outer world they want to serve Krishna. So, if we simply want to categorize consciousness based on how it is rooted, then definitely they are in the jagruti stage. But that will be a superficial understanding of the classification of consciousness.
So, and certainly even when pure devotees sleep, when they are sleeping their consciousness is withdrawn from the level of awareness of the external world and it is largely at the level of the mind. So, then they will be, from the level of consciousness point of view, they will be in swapna. So, as long as we are in embodied existence, it is simply because of the biological function of the body that jagruti and swapna will be states of consciousness that we will go through.
And everybody will go through. Even when there are self-realized souls, there are pure devotees, even if they are living in a particular body, then that body will, by sheer biological need, alternate between jagruti and swapna in the sense that the body needs to rest. And when they are awake, they are aware of the outer reality.
But from the content of consciousness point of view, the samadhi or turiya state is the state when one is conscious of spiritual reality. The consciousness is focused on spiritual reality. Now, in the bhakti philosophy we understand that the highest spiritual reality is Krishna and Krishna is manifest not only at the spiritual level, but Krishna is manifest even through the opportunity for service in this world.
And so, devotees, even in this world, are conscious of Krishna. And because they are conscious of Krishna constantly, so, in that sense of the content of consciousness being spiritual, devotees are in samadhi. Or even self-realized souls who are jivanmukta, they are situated in samadhi stage.
But it is not that their consciousness is not rooted through the body or through the mind. It is definitely rooted as long as they are in the world, they are functioning in this world. So, some level of consciousness has to be aware, has to be there at the external level.
That’s how they function in the external level. So, if we see Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s pastimes, where it is said that he would be at three kinds of consciousness, external consciousness, internal consciousness, and partially external, partially internal consciousness. Now, if we look at Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s life, even when he was in external consciousness, he was Krishna conscious.
So, that means that he was in a samadhi stage while being in external consciousness. So, this sort of thing would not be possible if we reduce samadhi state to only when one is conscious of only spiritual reality. So, a devotee is conscious of outer material things, but the devotee does not see those outer material things only as material.
Devotees see them in connection with Krishna. And by seeing them in connection with Krishna, the devotee sees them spiritually. स्तावर जंगं ना देखी ना देखी तारा मूर्थी सर्वत्र है निजः ईश्ठ देवस्पुद्धी So, स्तावर जंगं ना देखी, that one is not able to see the moving or non-moving things, one sees only Krishna.
Because one sees actually the connection of everything with Krishna, one sees one’s Ishtadev, it manifested through everything and connected with everything. So, if it is said that the advanced souls are never in Swapna stage, that simply means that their consciousness, even in the dream state, even when it is withdrawn from the gross body and situated in subtle body, that will happen. But because when the mind is uncontrolled, the mind wanders here and there, even when we are in the Jagruti stage, the mind wanders here and there, and in the Swapna stage also it wanders.
But that sort of wandering will not be there, that sort of random desires coming, random dreams coming, that will not be there. So, from the content of consciousness point of view, the arbitrary nature of the wandering of consciousness within dreams, that will not happen. But from the point of view of the consciousness being situated in the subtle body and not going to the gross body, that will definitely happen.
Because that’s simply the way the soul functions when the soul’s consciousness is rooted through the body. Now moving further, that’s why we will see that there are devotees who can get dreams about Krishna and things connected with Krishna. Even when they are not getting those specific dreams, they are, even in their dream state, absorbed in Krishna.
But when they get those dreams, in a special way, Krishna manifests and they reveal something for a special purpose, so that some pastime can be manifested even at the Jagruti level through the unfolding of those dreams. So, in this way, we can understand that the devotees don’t dream in the sense that their consciousness does not wander here and there as it happens for most people in the Swapna stage. But the self-realized souls, from the point of view of level of consciousness, it will be there as it is in the Swapna stage, in the subtle body.
But the content of consciousness will always be transcendental. And in that sense, whether they are in Jagruti or Swapna, they are in the Samadhi or Purya stage. Because the content of consciousness is the same as what is in that stage, that is spiritual reality, specifically the highest spiritual reality, Krishna.
