Bhagavatam-daily 146 – 11.09.21 – Krishna emanates and transcends material existence
Yathornanabhiridaya urnam santatya vatrataha tayavirittabhu yastam prasatya evam maheshvaraha prasatya evam maheshvaraha here the brahmana is telling what he has learnt from a spider yathornanabhiridaya yatha urnanabhi urnanabhi is the name used for the spider hrudayat now hrudaya literally means the heart but hrudaya also means genetically one self now I am speaking this from my heart that doesn’t mean that the sound is coming from the heart the sound is coming from the voice which is vaccinated by the brain but it is said that when you are speaking when you say I am speaking from the heart that means I am speaking from the core of myself, I mean it so the heart is also used sometimes metaphorically to refer to the self so yathornanabhiridaya so as from itself the urnanabhi the spider urnam santatya aktrata so urnam is thread, santatya is expanding vaktrata so just as the spider manifests thread from itself taya vihritya bhuyastam so then it expands and taya that thread vihritya, vihar is to play or to enjoy bhuyastam again that thread grasatyevam maheshwaraha grasatyevam so he swallows maheshwaraha the supreme lord so it is telling that just as the spider manifests from its web from its manifest thread which is made into a web and then when it wants it so similarly the lord manifests the web from himself and the lord withdraws the web after his purpose is done vihritya so now here the point is that every metaphor has a particular focus and if you want to learn from that metaphor we have to stress that focus otherwise we can we can misunderstand and be misleading so what is the focus of this particular metaphor at this particular time its focus is to illustrate how the law, the creation comes from the lord but the lord is distinct from the creation now the web which a spider produces the web is different from the spider eventually the spider can make a web and then it can go away from it it can be elsewhere and the web will still be there so the web is the expansion coming from the spider and yet is different from the spider so like that this world is an energy is an expansion coming from the lord aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate hmm so it is actually going to the point is that the lord manifests everything and then when everything is over then he withdraws everything in fact in the Upanishads also this definition is given itah pravrtir bhutana yena sarvam yantah yas means chapralayam yanti punareva yuvakshaye so sarvani bhutani prabhavatyah yugagame yas means chapralayam yanti punareva yuvakshaye so it is said that this verse comes from the Mahabharat it is said that this is the absolute truth is the one from whom whole creation comes about itah pravrtir bhutana itah pravrtir bhutana so from him the bhagavad gita also says itah pravrtir bhutana yena sarvam yantatam from him the material existence manifests pravrtir manifests and then he pervades all of existence so now the point is that Krishna is the source of everything and this world is his energy so right now we may be sitting on a particular chair and that chair is also the energy of Krishna and in one sense if we consider the energy and energetic phenomenon different then we understand that actually even at this very moment we are in contact with Krishna we are living with Krishna we are in touch with Krishna and that’s how we will be constantly so the key for understanding our relationship with Krishna is to understand that we are always in contact with him and yet we are not in contact with him that means that although we are in contact with Krishna’s immanent manifestation immanence refers to Krishna’s manifestation within nature, transcendence refers to Krishna’s manifestation beyond nature so we are in touch right now with Krishna’s immanent manifestation and eventually if we become conscious of Krishna more and more then we will rise from being conscious of his immanent manifestation so if we become conscious of Krishna’s immanent manifestations then gradually we will become we will become conscious of his transcendental manifestations that means we will move from immanence towards we will move from the awareness of his immanent manifestation towards awareness of his transcendental manifestations and gradually we will attain eternal life thereby so the important point is to recognize that now the key thing is to recognize that we are all in the service of the lord now the important thing is to recognize the relationship of the lord with the world and that relationship is inconceivable yet relishable so Krishna is eternal and transcendental yet he is eternally available for the soul who wants to turn towards him and who wants to connect with him and who wants to relate with him and relish eternal love with him so what we need to do is to recognize our eternal relationship with Krishna and dwell on that relationship so what we need to do is if we try to see how beyond the vicissitudes of material nature Krishna is always available for us Krishna is always waiting for us and just like a bird insect of prey gets caught inside the net and inside the web and is helpless so now we may say is it like a spider creates a web to consume so is it that Krishna creates a web like that to consume us not exactly the point is that the Vedic culture is not divorce Krishna from the negative part of material creation there are verses which say that aham grasatya that I am the consumer also so prabhavishnu says that prabhavishnu is I am the creator vishnu is I am the maintainer grasishnu is I am the devourer also so the act of destruction is also seen as a manifestation of the divine we have Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh who are considered three guna avatars so Mahesh is also a guna avatar and he is also considered to be a particular manifestation of the supreme, a guna avatar who actually accommodates the living entity who desires, who executes the who implements or manifests the impermanence of material nature by his actions so it is not that the lord desires things to be destroyed it is that the soul desires to be placed in an arena where whose nature is destructive whose nature is whose by nature is destructible and that’s why the soul suffers so ultimately we could say that everything is by the lord’s sanction that is true but the important point is to recognize that that the responsibility for coming under something is the living entities but critical for us rather than getting sidetracked into the example of the prey which gets caught in the spider’s web what we understand is the web may be there, web may not be there but the spider exists independent of the web so like that this material existence in which we may get entangled that is there but that is there sometimes and that is not there sometimes beyond that the lord exists eternally and he should be the goal of our life and when we make him the goal of our life then we attain lasting fulfillment we attain liberation from material existence and we attain eternal happiness
