Bhagavatam-daily 155 – 11.09.30 – Realization manifests as renunciation and humility
Thank you. अवदुद् ब्रह्मण is now coming towards the conclusion of the lessons that he is taught. And he speaks over here.
एवं संजात वैराज्यो In this way, I have learned the lesson of detachment. एवं संजात वैराज्यो This lesson has become ingrained within me. भिज्याना लोक आत्मनी भिज्याना, भिज्याना means realized knowledge.
आलोक आत्मनी, आलोक means to see or to have a vision, आत्मनी, internal vision. In this way, with realized knowledge, I stay fixed in an inner vision, in spiritual vision. Ultimately, the word आत्मनी refers in its highest sense to the Supreme Lord.
He is the soul of all souls. So I stay fixed in the Supreme Lord. भिज्यारामि महिमेताम भिज्यारामि, I move around on this earth.
महिमेताम, this earth. मुक्तः संगो अनहंकृतः Without any attachment, मुक्तः संगो and अनहंकृतः, without any ego. So having learned these lessons from my various spiritual masters, and being fixed in spiritual perception of आत्मा, of the Self or of the Lord, I move around on the earth without attachment and without ego.
So here, the fruit of knowledge is talked in terms of action. So if somebody has got knowledge to be detached, then how do we know that the detachment is for real? भिज्यारामि महिमेताम I move around in this world. I travel around.
So normally, in this world, when there is attachment, we want to settle down to a particular place. People want to say, I want to have a house, I want to have security, I want to have comfort. And we become attached to the security and comfort that we get through such things.
But if you want to go beyond the security and comfort, then the way is by… The security and comfort is illusory because it will ultimately be taken away from us. So if a person is detached, a person doesn’t seek security and comfort in external things, but seeks security and comfort in the inner connection with Krishna, in inner realization of Krishna. And one of the reasons why sannyasis are meant to travel is to prevent their becoming attached to any particular place or to the things at that particular place and to keep themselves detached.
Now, of course, maya can be so insidious that sometimes we become attached to traveling. Sometimes people like to brag, you know, just see my passport, how many countries I have traveled to. And sometimes people have ahankar of traveling, sometimes people are attached.
So traveling can also be a form of enjoyment. We go outside seeing, we go into various places, eat different kinds of foods and that sense of newness that comes in various places, that also gives a sense of enjoyment. Now, if there is deep learning happening by observing and seeing and learning, then that is wonderful.
But otherwise, if one is just titillating one’s senses by going to different places and titillating one’s ego, thinking that I have gone here and I have gone there, then that doesn’t lead to any realization. So he is saying that vichirami mahimmetam, I am traveling all over this world, but people when they travel around the world often they want to be noticed. But here the audubh brahmana is saying, I don’t want to be noticed.
He says, I am mukta sangho anahankartha. He is not attached to anything, even to attach, attached not even to traveling and there is no ego. But I am such a big traveler.
So, now it may not be practical for all of us to keep traveling to live, or to vichirami mahimmetam. Even sanyasis, if they travel still states, you need to have a base at some place because we live in a very different world from the world which the audubh brahmana was living. So the purpose will remain the same.
Whether it is the ancient world or the modern world, the purpose of transcending the world remains the same. But the practices for transcending that world may vary. The purpose remains the same, the principles also remain the same, but the practices change.
So we may not be able to shed attachment by traveling around and in that way still keeping ourselves detached. But we can still actually learn wherever we are. In the world, we can observe if we are working in a company, we can see often the politics that goes on in the company and the level of cutthroat competition that goes on and the level of… We can observe various things from which we can learn lessons.
So the principle is, the purpose is that we want to learn about the truths of life. The principle is that wherever we move, whatever we observe from that, we can learn lessons. And those lessons are what we focus on.
And by focusing on those lessons, we will also be able to stay fixed in spiritual truth. विज्ञानालोकात्मनी We will be able to perceive आलोकात्मनी with realization, we will stay fixed in Krishna, we will stay fixed in the inner truths. And when we stay fixed like this, आलोकात्मनी, we connect whatever we are doing with Krishna and we serve Krishna.
Then, although we may be moving here, moving there, we may be at one place or we may be moving around, but we can also actually stay मुक्त संगोनि इरहं, इरहं कृतः, अनहं कृतः. So, by having the mood of learning and cultivating the habit of meditating, meditating on spiritual truth, we can stay detached and humble. And thus, attachment and arrogance both direct our consciousness outwards.
Both direct our consciousness towards worldly things. And by directing our consciousness towards worldly things, we become trapped in material existence. If we want to, if we study the world, learn from the world and turn inwards, then we can stay free from misery and we can attain eternal existence.
So, by contemplating on the nature of the world and by meditating on our inner world, meditating on the soul and the super soul, we can live without entanglement in this world and progress towards liberation and lasting happiness thereof.
