Bhagavatam-daily 208 – 11.11.13 – Dream to come out of the dream
Thank you so here it is stated this is a verse which has only two lines in it sometimes depending on the way numbering is done occasionally it works out that some verses have two lines instead of four so this is one of those occasions so pratibuddhaiva sapnaan pratibuddhaiva sapnaan means in this way a self realized person like a person who has awakened from a dream naanatvaad vinivartate naanatvaad is the variety that is there in the material world vinivartate, one stays detached from that that was mentioned in the previous verse how with the vision of detachment ikshaya asanga cheetaya chinna sharpened by detachment one can cut through whatever illusion that might come in so when a person wakes up from a dream now most of us have had experiences of vivid dreams sometime or the other and these vivid dreams can be mortifying especially if they caused us reactions suppose they were very horrifying and we were screaming or they were too erotic and those cause some physical reactions and if somebody comes to us and wakes us up at night because we have been screaming or whatever then sometimes after we wake up we feel embarrassed because on waking up we feel that what is the need to get so worked up about this what is the need to get so worked up it was just a dream it had no reality so why did i let myself get so worked up that we can understand not when we are going through the dream but after we wake up from the dream because once we have woken up then the dream is exposed as a dream the key for the dream to have a grip on us is that it no longer appears like a dream it needs to appear like reality and sometimes if some people fear that their dreams might be portentous that means the dream might contain some omens about what is going to happen in the future then they may become disturbed thinking that oh what will happen if those dreams come true if this is what happens oh this is so horrifying thinking like this we may feel fear if there is still there is a possibility that a dream might turn that the dream especially a bad dream might turn out to be a reality now but once we wake up from the dream and once we know that oh it was just a dream then whatever variety you might have seen in the dream you might have seen in the dream earlier then you become detached distanced from that we might see some shape shifting monster in a dream which is attacking us but in reality there is no such monster and we are no longer worked up by it now interestingly the word dream is also used in a positive sense about the envisioning of a of a better future reality future world so for example as a famous speech of Martin Luther King says that I had a dream I have a dream where he says that in future I hope for a time when the world will be and America will not have any racial discrimination that’s the specific nature of his dream but the point is the word dream is also used positively that by which we say that if you work hard and if you are dedicated then you can make your dreams come true some sports star who might become a sports legend might say that oh I had a dream that one day I would be holding up the trophy aloft and now my dream has come true so sometimes we work to try to actualize our dreams so this is the word dream used in this sense doesn’t refer to some imaginary thing in terms of it not existing at all it refers to something which we hope to bring into existence in future now devotees dream about coming out of the dream what this means is that it’s not that even the propensity to dream it can be used in yukta vairagya principle in the in the pursuit of reality in the service of the lord in the future there will be temples and in the future there will be devotees and he worked very hard to actualize that dream and it became true eventually so the point of state dream is that as we move onwards on the spiritual path we realize that actually whatever happens in this world is nothing but a play of the illusory energy and yet within this world which largely features the play of the illusory energy the play of the supreme lord can also be manifested and that can be manifested in one way when the lord himself descends in the world and it can be manifested in another way when the lord leans to when the lord does some extraordinary things by empowering some devotees so we by dreaming of serving the lord and not so much in terms of dreaming that I will be the doer of great services but dreaming that as the lord will be glorified and that I will absorb myself completely in trying to actualize that glorification into manifesting that manifesting those glories we can actually accelerate our way to come out of the dream come out of the dream of material existence by dreaming about devotional service the more we dream about serving the lord now dream doesn’t mean that its a day dreaming where we just think and don’t do anything no we all need inspirational vision for motivation whenever we need to do anything that involves hard work so studying scripture is hard work so if we dream that by studying scripture nicely then I will be able to serve the lord I will be able to speak his glories then that helps us move onwards and that inspires us to put in the commitment of hard work and similarly with respect to whatever service we are doing that dream of dreaming of the service of the lord in the sense of using our power of desiring and imagining for the glorification of the lord can help us to come out to become detached from the material world to redirect our power of emotion and imagination from the world to Krishna and thus let that power of emotion and imagination accelerate our spiritual progress thus by dreaming out of Krishna about Krishna and his service we can come out of the dream of material existence
