Bhagavatam-daily 266 – 11.12.23 – The godless are like reverse-swans
His life tells us about thank you krishna is continuing that explaining the developing and explaining the metaphor of a tree of material existence as i mentioned two verses earlier so here krishna is saying that there are two kinds of people who enjoy the two different fruits so the saintly people the renunciate saintly renunciates enjoy one fruit and the attached householders enjoy another fruit so the fruit that the attached householders enjoy is bitter bitter because it must be attached to material existence that attachment ultimately causes great pain great suffering when we lose the object of attachment on the other hand and the same tree the fruit of liberation can also be attained because when we live with detachment in this world when we live primarily serve krishna to glorify krishna to please krishna then that kind of engagement helps us transcend the miseries of material existence by the steady practice of devotional service we realize that it is krishna who is the one underlying truth below the diverse material manifestations such people are said to be hamsa just as a swan is said to have the ability to avoid to if milk and water are mixed the swan rejects the water and accepts the milk so like that the paramhamsas the supreme swans they they reject they turn away they leave behind the material manifestation and they connect with the supreme lord and they eventually attain the supreme lord the bhagavatam is spoken to parikrit maharaj who has been a householder and has even as a householder he was a very devoted to the lord and now he is detached himself and he’s focused on as a youth itself he’s renounced the world and death is approaching so he’s focusing on consentence and shukto goswami is ultimately conveying by narrating what krishna is telling to uttava that for you now that you have renounced the world significant that parikshit maharaj did not go through his ritual for accepting the renounced order and when he came to know that he’s going to die in seven days he just came left home left his palace came to the banks of the sacred river the ganga and then he there spoke they there heard the bhagavatam from shukto goswami so when he had the renunciation in intention he did not need a renunciation in some external arrangement in external external ceremony a ceremony is meant to reinforce the intention but his intention was in full force already and its force is further being increased by bhagavatam’s assurance that that those who become like hamsas those who see matter but don’t see matter as meant for their own enjoyment and so don’t become attached to matter but see matter in connection with krishna and by using material things in krishna’s service become attached to krishna for them this world also gives the fruit of liberation and it is that fruit that one should aspire for maya mayam vedasa veda vedam there is a beautiful alliteration here maya mayam the sound ma ma ma comes three times maya mayam and so and vedasa veda vedam so here the sound here the sound veda comes thrice vedasa veda vedam vedasa such a person in the knower who knows this conclusion of the vedas vedasa veda vedam now this metaphor began by describing how there are two seeds that is piety and impiety there are two fruits they are suffering and enjoyment and they said that those who are detached they will get the fruit of the auspicious fruit the fruit of liberation and those who are attached will get the fruit of misery of bondage and the misery that it will inevitably cause so this understanding this is the ultimate import of the vedic study so even in the vedas there is a wide variety of subject that is taught and the bhagavata doesn’t just give us vedic knowledge it gives us the culmination the highest of vedic knowledge that highest is knowledge of krishna and understanding that connection with krishna will provide you liberation and disconnection with krishna will cause bondage so if we do not see the connection of krishna with things a connection of things with krishna if you see things with themselves then naturally we will think of them as meant for our enjoyment and when we see them as meant for our enjoyment then we will become entangled we will become bound so for those who are attached for those whose vision is fragmented those who are not able to see the connection of things with krishna for those people the whole material existence is filled with illusion and it will ultimately cause bondage so vedas are way in the way you know those who know this that krishna is the essence of material existence just like if somebody wants nourishment and wants to drink milk but the person somehow in a reverse hamsa process takes only the water and leaves the milk how unfortunate that person is so like that materialistic people those who are illusionary they reject krishna and accept only the material things disconnected from krishna and then water at least may give you some nourishment it can quench our thirst and by drinking water also even if food is not there a person can live for a significant number of days but one who is who rejects krishna completely and just focus on matter and thinks how i can enjoy matter how i can dominate matter then such a person will become extremely attached to material existence and will suffer repeatedly the threefold miseries in material existence
