Can a devotee pursue a career as a cricketer?

Hare Krishna Question Can a devotee pursue a career as a cricketer? Answer No career if it is not directly involved in breaking of the regulatory principles is out of bounds for a devotee so if a devotee again has the, if a person who has the inclinations has the talent, has the motivation for becoming a cricketer then that in and of itself is not a disqualification for practicing bhakti anybody can practice bhakti and we can't stop somebody who aspires to be a cricketer from practicing bhakti, there is nothing incompatible and some people may feel that that cricket is a very frivolous activity but in principle different people have to pursue different careers and if somebody is interested in this career and has the ability to make it to the distance, it's not that the person has to give up that in order to practice devotional service, anybody can practice devotional service now if somebody is a serious devotee for that person and if that person doesn't have so much talent, doesn't have so much motivation, then there is no need to take such a career because that involves a lot of competition, that involves a lot of passion and that involves a lot of nowadays the glamour and the corruption coming in, so there are problems in every career but intrinsically cricket is not out of the bounds of a devotee, so in fact when His Holiness Radhanath Maharaj he had a review of his book written by a Bengali cricketer a former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly Radhanath Maharaj said at that time he asked who is this person, they said he was a famous cricketer earlier, now he is retired so then Maharaj said that actually in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he just to gain social respectability in the eyes of people he took sannyas from Advaita sampradaya, which is actually anti- devotional, he was Vaishnava and he took sannyas from Advaita sampradaya just so that he could have respectability, he said, if Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came today, then he may well come as a cricketer in India because cricket has so much glamour and respect associated with it in today's society so the point is of yukta vairagya if somebody can be used in Krishna's service then why not but we don't have to go out of our way to see if I can use this in Krishna's service, if somebody is pursuing a particular career and if one can one also wants to practice devotional service, then one surely can and if one goes on further adventure and becomes a well-known cricketer and then is also known for one's spiritual principles and that can have a tremendous effect on society so the primary criteria in such things should be one's own material talents and inspiration and situation if one can pursue that there's nothing wrong in compatible with devotional service in that but again one has to make sure because this is such a glamorized profession so if one is to not get carried away by the glamour or sucked in by the pressure, both are possible if one is successful one gets carried away by the glamour if one is not successful one can be sucked in by the pressure and one can in both ways get completely dragged away from Krishna, so one has to make sure that one's spiritual roots are strong and steady through association, through sadhana swadhyaya with adequate time depending on one's situation then one can pursue even this career, it's not at all incompatible with devotional service.
