Can we integrate walking as an exercise with our daily chanting?
They can be accepted Hare Krishna question can we combine walking as an exercise with chanting nowadays our schedules are so tight that to manage time for both exercise as well as our spiritual sadhana like chanting becomes very difficult so can we combine the two so that we don't neglect the health by not doing exercise and do the chanting along with the walking answer this depends on individual to individual the important factor in chanting is that we be attentive while chanting different people have different kinds of capacities or intelligences material psychologists say that there are seven kinds of intelligences so so there some people have a visual intelligence so so they can if they see certain images they can take see darshan they take darshan and they can remember everything in detail others can't others have to make a conscious effort to remember some people have a very good musical intelligence so like that some people have good bodily kinesthetic intelligence that means that they can walk easily without getting distracted by the activity of walking so this happens with dancing also they can dance gracefully without having to be conscious that they are dancing or they are doing making motions gracefully other people they are so conscious whenever they are moving of how I am moving whether I am moving properly or not that a lot of their consciousness gets caught up in the bodily activity so for those whose bodily kinesthetic intelligence is high they will not be much distracted if they are walking while chanting and so their chanting will be attentive so walking and chanting is definitely not wrong because even our acharyas bhakti sannyasi thakur would frequently walk and chant shila prabhupada will also walk and chant and there are many senior devotees who do walk and chant so walking and chanting is okay as long as we are attentive now some devotees may find that they walking distracts them too much and if that is happening then we may have to find other time for exercise so it is difficult but we cannot compromise the quality of our devotional activities also so one way to arrive at a reasonable balance is if we are walking also we don't walk to new areas so if we go for a morning walk along a road then we see all different kinds of people and then maybe we do a little bit of socialization talk with them or smile at them and greet them and then we look around to see the sights all that can definitely will definitely be distracting so if we want to walk and chant it's better that we have a small area where we walk and chant so that there is not much there are not much new things to see or new people to meet and that way we will not be distracted by other things so where it is required walking and chanting is okay integrating the exercise with the devotional activity that is fine if we don't have time and if we don't get distracted and if we don't go into areas while walking where there will be a lot of distractions this is a decision which everyone will have to take individually and if we find ourselves getting distracted we should not impose our experience on others and think that those who are walking and chanting are compromising the quality of their chanting because they are in bodily consciousness because they are doing because they want to do exercise and they don't not so serious about devotion and nor should those who are walking and chanting think that others are negligent of their exercise and they are lethargic so ultimately Krishna consciousness Prabhupada would say is individual, voluntary and spontaneous so whatever way we can best serve Krishna through serving his holy name by chanting as attentively as possible we should do that and we should respect others if they do that in a slightly different way thank you Hare Krishna.
