DEEP acronym – What our phone can teach us about our mind
So I will summarise Respected Dr. Patil Other esteemed staff members And dear students I am grateful to be here Amongst all of you today Am I audible behind? So I will Speak on the topic of What your phone Can teach you About your mind The phone is Probably the Foremost Object That most of us Use externally And the mind Is the most important Object That we use internally And The mind is often Something of a mystery What exactly Is the mind? How does it function? How can we make it Function constructively for us? These are Questions that Perplex all of us At some time or the other I will start With one incident about How the mind Once it catches an idea It just sticks to it And Once it starts Imagining something Believing something Then it forces us To think in a particular way Even against Rational evidence So before I go Into the specifics Let's have a quick understanding Of what do we mean by the word mind I'll draw on a Tripartite model Of the self As is given in the ancient yoga Texts of India Which describe that We ourselves are like a computer system Just like In a phone there is hardware And there is a software When you want to purchase a phone Nowadays we want smart phones So how do you decide how smart The phone is? We look at how good the hardware is And how good the software is So similarly Our body is like The hardware With which we function And our mind is like the software And then Beyond the mind There is a user of the phone So like that We as spiritual beings We as agents of consciousness Are users Of the body-mind mechanism So this is the Operational model That we'll consider To analyse how the mind functions And I'll talk about Four main lessons Which we'll draw from Four features of The mind of a phone So this is centred On an acronym DEEP D is default settings E is energy draining apps Second E is Exploring hidden features And P is Purposeful use So all of our phones They come with certain default settings For example Say A phone made by A particular company Might come with a particular browser Inbuilt in it And as soon as we click a link The link Could conceivably Be opened with any other browser But it gets opened By the default browser And this is The default setting in the phone Say some browsers are known to Protect privacy Some browsers are known to violate privacy Now if The browser that is The default setting in our phone Is a privacy violating browser Then as soon as we click a link That will open We don't choose to open that browser We just choose to click a link But that browser automatically opens So just as there is a default setting In a phone Similarly There are default settings In our mind Default settings in our mind means That we all Have certain conceptions Of things Say for example There is an alcoholic A person who is compulsively addicted To drinking alcohol And such a person thinks that As soon as I want Pleasure, as soon as I want Relief, that person equates Pleasure or relief With drinking alcohol Now pleasure and Relief could be got By many other different means But because Of the repeated habit of drinking That has Become the default setting Of the alcoholic And quite often When people start drinking Initially They drink for pleasure I want to enjoy life So I drink But after sometime once they get addicted They drink Not because Drinking gives pleasure Rather they drink because Not drinking causes Pain They drink not to feel good They drink just to stop Feeling bad So what has happened over here That emotions have become Conditioned With the drinking of alcohol So now Alcoholism may be an extreme example But all of us Have certain default settings within us And we Equate, we don't examine Those default settings Although we can Just like I can go Within the settings of my phone And decide that this is not going to be My default browser I want this to be my default browser So similarly We can change our Conceptions But we do have Certain default conceptions And we have certain Default conceptions that this is what gives me Pleasure But then does it really Give me pleasure So As I said I will start with an incident This is a Incident, I am currently writing a book on addiction And spirituality, when doing research I found this incident From a life of a recovering alcoholic in America So This young man One night suddenly at 3 am he felt a strong Urge to drink And he got up He went to his room and looked at the fridge Over there, he didn't have any Drinks over there So he took out his car And he went to the nearby bar And he wanted To drink A particular Kind of alcohol But that particular kind was not available in that bar So he drove across It was a cold freezing night Especially in the northern part of America, winters are freezing Cold, so he was in that cold And he had been so crazed By the desire To drink that he had forgotten to wear He didn't have any warm clothes also So he got into the car And right in the middle his car broke down And when the car broke down He got out And he was so Maddened by the desire I have to drink And he just ran to the bar It was almost half a mile away He ran in the cold, he was trembling Finally He reached the bar He says give me this drink He got it, opened the bottle Drank it, drank a sip and said no I spent so much time And energy to get this, I will drink this I will savour this, I will drink this peacefully So he put the lid And started walking back As he was walking back, it had started snowing And In the snow He slipped He slipped and fell down And he had not put the lid on the Alcohol bottle properly So He bathed in the alcohol And he was lying on the ground Looking up, all around He could see skyscraper buildings All of them were dark And suddenly What am I doing? I could have been sleeping Peacefully in my bed Here I am Bathed in alcohol, lying in the snow Freezing in cold What am I doing? That time he realised I am not Free Am I audible still? Ok good So I am not free I am bound This desire for Alcohol has bound me We live in an age Currently where freedom Is cherished, even glamourised And yes We all want to be free But we have to understand freedom properly We often think of freedom In terms of freedom to do things If I want to drink, I want to smoke I want to do this, I want to do that Who are you to stop me? I want to be free Yes, there are two kinds of freedoms There is freedom for And there is freedom from Freedom for Freedom for means I am free to do this Doing that, doing that And that is the kind of freedom That most people agitate for But there is another Far more empowering freedom And that is freedom from If A student is free From the desire for alcohol This person Because of the desire for alcohol Had to go out at midnight Say this is a hostel, this is a University And in between there is a bar The student Who is free One student may think I want to be free To do whatever I want, I want to be free for drinking Fine But the freedom for drinking Ends up Creating a default setting So whenever I want pleasure Whenever I want relief, I drink And eventually Actually the default setting Becomes so compulsive That I cannot avoid drinking Even if I want to So freedom from Means the student is here University is here, the student Decided I am not going to drink And that student is free from the desire To drink So in this case, for this student The default setting Is positive So the default setting Is our subconscious Conception of happiness And we all Have certain default settings Unfortunately Many of our default Settings are At fault That means our default settings are Faulty, they get Us into trouble So once we Recognise this fault This browser, I don't want to use this browser Then we go within And change the default setting So similarly Spiritual wisdom enables us To look at ourselves Okay, what are My default conceptions? Are they right? I am thinking that this will give me pleasure Is it really giving me pleasure? I am thinking this will give me relief Is it really giving me relief? So examining The default settings so that We can optimise the settings That is something Which is vital for Best using the phone And that is also vital for best Using the mind So this is the Default setting Now A second point I would like to talk about is D-E-E-P I am talking four points So E is Energy draining apps Sometimes We charge our phone in the morning And by noon The battery is near 1% What happened? Where did the energy go? And then We may go into the Click the power button and we find This app, I am not using it at all But that app is just there In the background, it is running And it is draining All the energy When we recognise that What do we do? We just either stop the app Or we delete the app So our phone's battery Is meant for our usage It is not that any app should be allowed To drain our energy But there can be Energy draining apps And many phones Often come preloaded with apps And many of those apps We may never use But just by being on the computer They drain our energy Similarly Within our mind Are also Energy draining Mentalities One such mentality Which drains Enormous amounts of energy Is worry Worry Is The interest We pay On loans That we haven't yet taken Worry Is the interest We pay on loans That we haven't yet taken What that means is That often We worry about problems Which have not even happened What if this happens? What if that happens? What if that goes wrong? But most of the times If we look at our life If we consider what we were worried about One year ago We laugh at how much worried I was At that time The Mind's habit of worrying Drains our energy So for example Consider Another incident There was a woman She came to a doctor And she said Doctor There is a frog in my stomach Please do surgery and remove the frog The doctor said There cannot be any frog In your stomach Although I can feel It moving in my stomach Please do something No there is no frog Don't worry you are just imagining No there is a frog The doctor said no there is nothing there She went to a second doctor Doctor please do some tests The doctor did the tests And even after that Couldn't get it They couldn't think there is no frog They went to a third doctor, fourth doctor When she came to a tenth doctor It's okay Yeah Came to a tenth doctor And when the tenth doctor heard the story About How Yeah So The doctor realised How she had gone to so many doctors So she realised This is a problem of the mind It's not a health problem So she did some Did some She said you are right Actually we discovered There is a frog in your stomach Oh doctor Thank you very much He said nobody was ready to believe me But I can feel that frog He said we have to do surgery To remove this frog Please do it immediately So then they admitted her Once they admitted her Then The doctor gave her anaesthesia And he just put some surgical incisions on her belly And he asked a nurse To go to a nearby pond And from there He asked her to fetch a frog And then when this Woman came back to consciousness He told her See we found this frog in your stomach Oh doctor You saved my life Thank you very much Now I am free Thank you And she went away very grateful Very happy And the doctor and the medical staff thought It's a very clever solution She is happy now And the problem is solved After a week She came back frantic Doctor said what happened Doctor the frog had babies The frog The frog had babies So what happened was The mind Had started imagining The mind When we start worrying It starts imagining problems Even when no problem exists And just as An energy draining app Simply takes away energy Without doing anything constructive Like that Worrying is a function of the mind Which simply drains Our capacity to do things Sometimes we wake up in the morning If you are worried about this Worried about that In 2-3 hours Just feel so tired We have not done much physically But because the worry Has been burning us We feel exhausted We feel As if we just can't Do anything So The mind Has a very real capacity To drain us Of our energy Just as We learn to detect And then delete The energy draining apps Similarly We need to find out Which are The energy draining Habits and mentalities Within us And once we come to know about it Then we can deal With it So How exactly Do we deal with worry At one level When I am worrying What is it that I am worrying about One of the easiest ways To deal With worry Is to just ask the question Ask two questions What is the Problem right now And What can I do About it right now Just come to the present We may be worried Oh If I complete my degree But I don't get a job I have taken so much loan My parents have paid so much money What if I am not able to earn Yes These are all future possibilities But what is the problem Right now One of the Best things about life Is that life always comes to us One moment at a time Life comes to us One moment at a time The problems That we have to deal right now We all have The ability to deal right now But it is Only when to the problems Of today We add the problems of tomorrow And we add the possible problems Of tomorrow And the possible problems of day after tomorrow Then We feel burdened If I am told to carry a 5 kg weight I can easily carry it But If instead of 5 kg I am told to carry 50 kg weight It is going to be quite difficult If I am told to carry 100 kg It will be almost impossible So a 5 kg weight Is the problem we are facing Right now But A 100 kg weight Is our worry About what problems will come in the future So by Training ourselves To bring ourselves back To the present We are training ourselves To bring ourselves back To the present What is the problem Right now And what can I do right now About it These two questions will bring us back in the present And they will Empower us Because The present we do have some control The future We don't know what is going to come So The past is history The future is mystery The present Is All that we have And all that we will ever have So by recognising that Our thinking about the future Worrying about the future Is simply an energy draining act We stop thinking about it This doesn't mean we don't plan Or prepare for the future Yes we can plan and prepare But we have to be grounded in the present Okay this is what This is where I want to go in the future What can I do for it right now And that way we can move forwards And For grounding ourselves In the present There is We come to the next leap Exploring New features Many of our phones Nowadays The phones have so many features That we don't even We may not even know that the phone has such features So for example I have had this phone for almost A year or so But only recently I came to know about gestures Now that if I just Move my hand In a V symbol The battery turns on If I move it again, battery goes off So Basically So I am not so good at That feature right now, I just discovered it So this is a new feature I found out So Our phones are such Complicated devices They may have features which we don't know about And those features may be very Convenient for us So like that if we consider Our own being Our mind Our mind is like a food We ourselves may have features, we may have talents We may have abilities That we know nothing about If we are in that mood of exploration We can discover so much more About ourselves And perhaps The most important discovery The most empowering Aspect of our own personality Our own ability That we can discover Discover is our Spiritual side Our spirituality Is actually not just a feature Of ours It is the essence of who we are What do we mean by our spirituality? Every one of us Is unique Much of our Energy gets Drained because we are always looking at Others This person looks better than me This person speaks better than me This person Is more Smarter than me We compare And when we compare We just drain ourselves But our spirituality Helps us to understand That every one of us Is made unique For a purpose We all Are distinct And we are all meant to make Distinctive contributions Our spirituality has two aspects We understand that we ourselves Are spiritual beings We are souls And our spirituality also means that We are parts of a whole That whole can be known In different traditions By different names But We are all parts of the whole And what this implies Is that Every one of us is what we are For a purpose We often feel If only I had been like this person If only I had been like that person But if God had wanted us To be someone else He would have made Someone else If God had wanted You to be someone else He would have made someone else God has made you, you God has made me, me God has made every one of us Distinct And we are all The way we need to be For our spiritual evolution For our growth So Understanding this That My spirituality Is my core And my spirituality Is not just a product of chance My spirituality Is not something in which I am deprived But rather I am a part of the whole And this understanding Is itself a source of Serenity, strength And satisfaction And we understand That That That actually at our core We are indestructible The body Can get damaged But the soul is beyond all damage In the Mahabharata There is an incident when Gandhari Gave Armour to her son Duryodhana And when he was fighting With Bhima Bhima hit him a terrible blow And the blow was so forceful That Normally A person's bones would have been shattered A person would have died at that time But Duryodhana was thrown back by the blow Such was its force But it did not hurt him at all He was amazed Bhima was amazed All the onlookers were amazed And then he realised I have got some armour here And this armour is really amazing I started laughing scornfully At Bhima So Our spirituality Is like our armour The more we understand That we are spiritual beings At our core The spiritual essence of us Cannot be hurt Cannot be destroyed By anything That brings us tremendous security That brings us Tremendous strength So the Spiritual side of ours Is our greatest untapped Nature Whenever we feel disturbed Whenever we feel worried If we could draw our consciousness From the material level To the spiritual level We can experience relief Suppose Say a place Is very hot Just a few months ago I was in the Middle East And extremely hot there In Dubai So as soon as From outside the heat We come into an air-conditioned room What happens? Immediate relief is there The outside atmosphere Is still hot But inside We get relief So like that If we consider Material consciousness and spiritual consciousness At the level of material consciousness It is like the outer atmosphere Extremely hot We feel worried about this We feel agitated about that We feel irritated about this So many negativities will keep coming upon us But if we come to spiritual consciousness That like coming In an air-conditioned room And as soon as we come To spiritual consciousness We experience relief We experience calmness In different Wisdom traditions of the world There are different processes Talked about For coming to spiritual consciousness For becoming aware Of our essential spirituality In the Indian tradition Is what we call Yoga And Among different forms of yoga There is mantra yoga Mantra Is not just an ordinary sound Mantra is special Empowered sound Just like we could have a random Set of symbols But if we have E is equal to MC Square Now this is symbols But this symbol has so much meaning Has so much Understanding is so much Powerful things can be done So like that Mantra is a powerful sound Vibration Which can spiritualise Our consciousness Outside it is hot In an AC room it is Soothingly cool How do we come from outside to inside The door for coming From outside to inside Is mantra So when we chant Sacred mantras That enables us To spiritualise our consciousness And thus By such mantra yoga Or mantra meditation We can find ourselves becoming calm We can discover areas Of peace that we did not know Before The same situation which would have agitated us Tremendously earlier Once we start practising Spirituality We will find that we don't get so disturbed Yes the problem is there I will deal with it We won't get worked up So when we start practising spirituality When we start training ourselves To spiritualise Our consciousness To fix our consciousness On the spiritual sound of mantras Then we discover Just like Duryodhana was hit And he found that he was not hurt Although he was hit Like that we will find That the world's problems will hit us But internally We won't be hurt Because we will have Calmed ourselves internally So since 2015 I have been going to America The first year I went to America in 2015 I gave a talk in Columbus in Ohio State University And 2016 2017 Both times I had gone to the same university and spoken So I developed some relationship with the students over there So first year when I went there I gave a class on Regulating our mental diet And after that a student came And he told me Just before this programme I Was thinking of committing suicide He was involved with some girl And she had left him to go with some other boy And he was shattered So he was about to commit suicide But then he saw the poster of this programme And somehow Something within him said Let's go and watch this programme And when he came to the programme He is telling me all this after the programme He said I understood That it was not I who wanted to commit suicide There was this voice within me Which is prompting me And now I am understanding This is the voice of my mind This is the setting within my mind Which is telling me that I don't have to do this So from that time he started practising spirituality And this year When I had gone He told me that he was in a similar situation He had a relationship with some other girl And she had also left him But this time He said That Instead of And I got so frustrated Instead of Even considering Ending my life Because he had been practising spirituality What happened He was very attracted to Musical mantra chanting He used to play a violin And he liked to sing mantras In kirtans And he said When this Girl sent him a message saying that I am breaking up with you For a moment he was frustrated But then immediately He just went to his room He said I locked myself in the room And for like 6 hours I was simply playing my violin And singing A mantra He was singing the Hare Krishna mantra Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare And as he kept singing this mantra He said That Those 6 hours I experienced The kind of peace The kind of joy That I have never experienced in my life Since that Moment of my life Which could have been the most Shattering The most painful Relationship breakup Especially in youth Is not just a relationship breakup Because we define ourselves In terms of our relationship When somebody leaves us We ourselves feel rejected We feel unworthy So he said that time Because I had practised Spirituality I just gravitated towards Taking spiritual shelter And that moment which would have been The most painful Actually became the most joyful moment of my life So what has happened over here He had tapped The untapped Untapped feature of his spirituality And although the blows of life hit him But they couldn't hurt him He had found Some higher shelter So this is E The last part we will talk about is P P is purpose We are talking about the acronym DEEP Going deep into our life So purposeful use We are meant to use our phone Not that our phone A phone is meant to use us A phone meant to use us means what That in the phone Sometimes there are so many notifications come up This update comes up This thing pops up in this browser This thing comes up in this app And we might just get compulsively Hooked to it Reading this, watching this Clicking this, exploring this There is one boy in Thailand He He Continuously used his phone For 118 hours He didn't sleep He drank some water he didn't even eat 118 hours continuously He was using, using, using And after that because he was so caught In watching movies Going on YouTube and seeing this Seeing that After that he just fainted And his friends were searching One of them came In his room and they found him and took him to hospital That's how he survived So that It's that much that a phone can just completely Entangle a person Click this, watch this, touch this So the phone We are meant to use it, not that it Uses us So when we pick up a phone We have to have purpose I want to check my emails, I want to check my messages I want to check my Facebook updates The phone If we purposefully use it It is a very powerful tool You can connect with anyone in the world You can get a lot of things done But if we are not purposeful While using the phone Then we may just End up spending hours and hours And we get consumed Nowadays Advertisements are so well designed That they can hook us For hours and hours And thus we get trapped So the Bhagavad Gita cautions us about this When it says that we need to use Our inner resource, our mind Very carefully It says elevate yourself with your mind Don't degrade yourself With your mind The mind can be your friend The mind can be your enemy So before We can use our phone well We need to know what do I want to use it for So like that Before we can use our mind And our mental resources productively We need to know What am I using these for What is the purpose of my life So our spirituality Anxiety gives us a higher purpose Which transforms Anxiety into intensity What is that higher purpose And how does it transform Anxiety into intensity The higher purpose Is that We are parts of a whole And actually if we consider Our own bodies There is so much happening in the body That we don't take care of When we eat food We just eat the food But who or what digests the food We don't even know it Usually the only time We think about our digestion Is when it doesn't work Oh my digestion is not working That's the time we think about it But actually if we look at The complicated mechanism By which digestion takes place We are not even aware of it So we do our part By putting food in the body In the mouth And there is some higher arrangement By which the body takes care of the food So we just need to do our part Now suppose we board a plane Yesterday I came from Mumbai To here by plane Now when I am boarding a plane I am concerned whether I have my boarding pass or not Whether I have my passport or not Now I am not worried Whether the pilot is trained or not Whether the aeroplane has adequate fuel or not Whether the pilot is drunk Or the pilot is sober No there is a whole system That will take care of that What I need to do is I just need to take care of my part And if I take care of my part The whole system will take care Of the whole thing So similarly what spirituality helps us to understand Is that We all have our parts in life And there is something bigger than ourselves Which is in charge of the whole picture So usually we feel worried Because of the things that are not in our control Now say I am studying for my exam But what if this question comes What if something out of syllabus comes What if I forget at that time What if I fall sick at that time So many things can be out of our control And thus we feel worried So normally Without understanding life's spiritual purpose We operate within the binary Either things are in my control Or things are out of my control But spirituality shows us a third option The third option is that Things which are not in my control Are not out of control They are in some higher control Now a patient Who is being treated The patient may be getting Compulsive coughs And the physician may try to stop the cough But he is not able to stop the cough But if the patient is under treatment The doctor's plan is working And although the patient May not be able to control the cough But still the patient is under control The doctor is giving medicine The patient will be healed So similarly In a particular situation That we are in Any situation we are in There are some things which are in our control Some things which are not in our control Now most of the times We worry about the things which are not in our control And we feel powerless Like say tomorrow I have an exam What if this happens, what if that happens The more we think about the things which are not in our control We become anxious And we become powerless But If in that same situation We shift our focus To that which is in our control So what is in my control Tomorrow I have an exam That means I have 10 hours of exam Out of those 10 hours 6 hours I need to sleep 1 or 2 hours I have to do some other work So that means I have 3 hours of exam 2 hours of exam, 3 hours of exam So let me focus and study So as soon as we focus on that which is in our control That brings intensity So the same situation If I think of what is not in my control It causes anxiety If I focus on what is in my control That brings intensity So our spirituality Helps us understand That we are We have no need to control the future We have no need to control everything There is a higher force Which is going to take care of everything We just need to play our part This purpose If we understand clearly Then we can stay focused And thus That situation which earlier Caused us anxiety Will bring intensity within us And with that intensity We can move forward positively So We are a part of a reality Far bigger than ourselves And let the part Do the part And the whole will fill the hole The hole in our heart Is what gets filled with negativity With worry With resentment But when we become spiritual When we connect the whole Through the practise of spirituality Then we become Internally secure We become internally strong And thus we can Actually bring out our best So As students All of you are in a very formative stage Of your life And This is the stage When the mind can cause enormous problems Just about a month ago I was in IIT Kharagpur I was giving some talks over there And there IIT Kharagpur is one of the best colleges in India And the students Are under so much stress Several students are committing suicide And it's all because They are not able to manage their lives So one of the top value education professors From IIT I was talking with him And we were planning out A spirituality based value education syllabus By which Students can empower themselves To Tap their mind Not be trapped by their mind Unfortunately If you are not careful If you don't learn what the mind is And we don't learn to tap the mind Then we will be trapped by it We will be trapped in negativity We will be trapped in worry We will be trapped in misery And ultimately we will be trapped And dragged towards self destruction But in contrast If we learn to tap our mind Just like our phone If used properly can be a very powerful device Our mind can be an even more powerful device Now whatever it is The worthy goal that we wish to achieve in our life If we learn to Found our life On spirituality Make spirituality our foundation And with spiritual understanding We reorient our life Then we will be able to Direct our mind Our mind will become our friend Not our enemy And with the mind as our friend We can do far far better things Than what we Would normally be able to do I will conclude with one thought That we often think Of our time in terms of Activities You know morning I am going to attend this class Afternoon I have this experiment Late afternoon I have this meeting Evening I have this And I think our day is occupied in this way Yes our time is taken by our activities But Our activities alone don't take our time More than our activities It is our thoughts that take our time Now if I come to a class But just before the class Somebody has insulted me Somebody has snubbed me And then I am sitting in the class I am looking at the blackboard I am looking at the professor But nothing is going in my head My mind is filled with Revenge fantasies I am going to get back at this person So that one full hour goes We are in the class But we are not in the class So what has happened The thought of anger The thought of revenge Has consumed our time And like this if we look at our day So much of our time Which externally We think we are engaged in activities But it is going off in stray thoughts In waste thoughts In destructive thoughts So just as we carefully Try to manage our time We need to carefully manage our thoughts And spirituality Is the skill For managing our thoughts For managing our Inner mental energy And just as when we use our time properly We can do so much In our life Similarly when we learn to tap our thoughts Properly Everyone of us can do lots of things In our life We can bring out our best And we can make valuable contributions In whichever field We decide to work in And achieve So I will summarise what I spoke today I started by I started by speaking about What our phone can teach us about our mind I centred it on the acronym D E E P Does anyone remember The four words D is what Default settings I gave an example of Say an alcoholic has a default setting that Happiness means Drinking Say our phone may have a default setting that Click a link this browser should open So now sometimes the default setting May be faulty Happiness can be got in so many other ways I just told the story of the alcoholic Who found himself lying in the snow Bathed in alcohol And that time he realised My default setting is wrong Drinking is not making me happy It is simply making me miserable So we need to examine and change Our default settings What is second E Energy draining apps Sometimes we just Start our phone and within a few hours We find the battery has come down 1% So there may be some apps just sucking the energy Like that our mind has Habits which drain Our energy One such habit is Worrying I gave the example of the woman Who thought there is a frog in her belly Even when the doctor pretended that They have removed it surgically He said that actually There are babies over there So like that worry Is the interest we pay on loans We haven't yet taken The best way to deal with worrying Is to ask two questions What is the problem I am facing right now And what can I do about it right now This brings us to the present And helps us To focus on constructive action It counters the negative spell of the mind What is the second E Third E Third point Does anyone remember Exploring Exploring new apps In the phone So just like if there is a battery app The gesture will turn on So like that Do we have some talent, some ability Some features which we don't know about So our spirituality tells us That our uniqueness Is a gift Although we may feel I don't have qualities like this I don't have talents like this But every one of us is special And we are all meant to make A special contribution If God had wanted you to be someone else He would have made someone else And this Understanding our spirituality Gives us inner strength It acts like a armour When life blows hit us Because by directing Our consciousness spiritually We find relief Just like if it is hot outside And if I come to air conditioned room I feel relief Like that from material consciousness We come to spiritual consciousness We feel relief I told the story of the student From Ohio Who was suicidal at one time Because of a breakup But then when he started chanting mantras Spiritualised his consciousness That which could have been the most painful moment Of his life Became the most joyful experience of his life And last P Purposeful use That just as We If we don't use our phone carefully Purposefully We may spend hours and hours In just wasting our time on the phone So similarly If we just get carried away by our mind's thoughts We will go all over the world and not achieve anything But if we are clear What is my purpose Then the mind can help us In fulfilling that purpose To understand our purpose We understand we are a part of a reality bigger than ourselves We have to focus on doing our part When I board a plane I don't have to worry about the qualifications Or pilot I just have to make sure I have got my documents Like that we play our part And the hole will fill the hole within The emptiness The insecurity The negativity If you just understand I am meant to play a part Whatever I can do best If I do that The rest will be taken care of Spirituality The same situation which causes anxiety When we think about things that are not in our control That situation can provide Intensity If we focus on the things that are in our control And by giving ourselves Spiritual understanding We can focus on that which is in our control And I concluded We may feel I don't have time for spirituality No our time is not just taken away By activities It is taken away by thoughts And just as planning to use our time properly Is not a waste Wastage of time Similarly Training ourselves to use our thoughts properly Is not a wastage of time It is a very powerful use of time Thus we can avoid being trapped By our thoughts And we can tap our thoughts Thereby bringing out our best And contributing our best to the world Thank you very much.
