Did Kunti emotionally weaken Karna by revealing that the Pandavas were his brothers?
Hare Krishna question did Kunti emotionally weaken Karna before the battle by telling him that the Pandavas were his brothers answer firstly that was not her intention and secondly whether that was a consequence at all is itself questionable now when Kunti came to meet Karna at that time she risked great disgrace and she had actually nothing to gain at that time for a woman in that culture to admit that she had had a child before marriage would have been scandalous and she had a lifetime of reputation built by her exemplary character and she risked it all just to come and tell Karna if Karna had told that to everyone if Karna had accepted her request that he not fight with the vicious Kauravas but join the side of the virtuous Pandavas then Kunti would have had the most explanation to do so she would have had to explain to her own sons to her elders to the citizens to everyone what had happened before her marriage and she risked all that embarrassment why simply because she didn't want Karna to die a mother always loves her child whether the child is born before marriage or after marriage and similarly Kunti loved Karna with the natural maternal affection for her in fact the first time Kunti saw Karna in the martial exhibition of Drona she fainted because she recognized him and she was delighted to know that he had survived and he had prospered he had become a heroic warrior but later on her heart was anguished to see the intense rivalry that took place between her two sons Arjuna and Karna and now when there was going to be a battle to the point of death you know she was going to lose one of her sons and it is quite likely given the trends from the past that Arjuna would kill Karna so the point is we have discussed actually in other answers we have discussed that how Karna was repeatedly defeated by Arjuna he was defeated in the Virat Yudha he was defeated he was proven to be inferior when he was defeated by the Gandharvas and the Gandharvas were defeated by Arjuna when he was also defeated by Drupada's army and Drupada's army was defeated by Arjuna so by all indications Karna would have died so Kunti came there not came there to tell Karna about his parenthood just so that his life could be saved and to to ascribe the motive of emotionally weakening him in his battle against Arjuna that was extremely cynical view of things we just did not reflect on the nature and character of we did not gel with the nature and character of Kunti and it was not that Kunti specifically asked Karna to spare his brothers or spare her sons it is Karna who when he felt that he had refused the request of Kunti to come on the side of the Drupada's he wanted to give something for her and he told her that you will always have five sons so either Arjuna or I will be there so now so this is so firstly Kunti's intention was just to save Karna's life and she was ready to risk great embarrassment for that purpose now secondly whether Karna was emotionally weakened in his fight as far as we read the Mahabharata the Mahabharata does not give any indication of that he fought ferociously and yes he because of the word he had given to Kunti he did not kill the other Pandava brothers but even if he had succeeded in killing them whether that would have made any major difference in the course of the war would have been was open to debate if one of the Pandava brothers had been killed and the other Pandava brothers would have been infuriated and they would have wreaked havoc on the Kaurava army in fact when Duryodhana had Drona anointed as the as his commander after the fall of Bhishma at that time Drona asked Drona was pleased and he asked what benediction do you want he said please arrest Yudhishtira and bring him alive before me so Drona was surprised so you also do not want Ajata Kshatriya to die so he was pleased but Duryodhana said no if we kill Yudhishthira Bhima and Arjuna will be furious and they will destroy our army he said I want to have him arrested alive so that I can gamble with him again and Shakuni can defeat him and send him into exile once again so of course this is the ultra manipulative Machiavellian attitude of Duryodhana but the point for us is that even Duryodhana knew that killing Yudhishthira would not actually work against him because it would incite the fury of the Pandavas and Arjuna's one day's fury on the death of Abhimanyu itself was unbearable for the Kaurava army so the point I am making here is that Karna's sparing sparing Kunti's other sons the other four Pandavas because of his promise to Kunti did not make any significant difference in the course of the war and whenever he encountered Arjuna there is no indication at all in the Mahabharata that he fought half heartedly because of the thought that Arjuna was his brother so he fought with full vigor fury and his and skill all that he had and he before that also he fought ferociously against the Pandavas and against the Pandava army so neither was Kunti's intention to emotionally weaken Karna by revealing to him his parenthood nor did Karna actually become emotionally weakened by that revelation Thank you.
