Discover your inner power – with Spanish translation
The topic I was going to speak on is discover your inner power.
I'll speak in four parts related with the title. Discover, then your, who is you? What is real discovery? Inner, what is the inner world? And power, how do we acquire the ultimate power? So let's begin with discovery. Normally, when science discovers something, it essentially moves from something specific and visible to something invisible and universal.
So for example, when Newton saw the fruit falling and from there he discovered the principle of gravity. So he saw something visible and specific, a fruit falling. Now millions of people before him may have also seen a fruit falling.
They would probably have just picked up the fruit, eaten it and gone on their way. But Newton asked himself the question, what made this fruit fall? And in answering that question, he came up with a universal principle that is invisible, the principle of gravity. So in the same way, in any field of discovery, we move from the visible and the specific to the invisible and the universal.
So similar principle of discovery can be applied when we want to explore life's spiritual side. So some people say that, oh spiritual, all this is unscientific, I don't believe in this. But Albert Einstein, who was probably the greatest scientist of the last century, said something significant.
He said, all the sciences, religions and arts are the fruits of the same tree of human knowledge. That means the same intelligence, when it enquires in one direction, it comes up with science. When it enquires in another direction and makes some discoveries, it comes up with religion.
When it enquires in another direction and comes up with some discoveries, that leads to art. Now, let's move on from this principle of discovery to the point of you. So who am I really? So we may say, I have my name, I am this, I am young boy, young girl.
But, I can change my name and my age will change, even my nationality can change. All that we identify ourselves as, that can all change. In fact, scientifically speaking, all the cells of our body keep changing.
Even the cells of the brain keep changing. So that means that I remain the same, but my whole body and my whole brain changes. So how do I remain the same? Suppose, I gave you a paper on which I wrote a message.
And then, one by one, suppose we were able to remove all the atoms that comprise that paper. And after all the atoms of the paper are removed, still the message remains the same on the paper. Then that would mean, actually, the message was not written on the paper, the message was somewhere else, it just appears to be there on the paper.
Maybe it is written on some invisible material that is stuck on the paper. The paper is changing, but the message is remaining the same. Similarly, all the cells in our body, all the cells in our brain change, but still I remain the same.
Similarly, all the cells in my body and my brain change, but I do not change, I remain the same. So who is this person who never changes? There is a neurosurgeon. Brain surgeon.
So he tried to find out where is the person in the brain. So he got a subject to raise his hand. And he knew that the movement of the hand, which is dependent on the motor nervous system, is associated with, say, the frontal lobe of the brain.
So when the hand was raised, the frontal lobe of the brain was activated. And when the hand was put down, that part got deactivated. When he asked the subject what happened, he said, initially I raised my hand, then I put my hand down.
Later, Dr. Penfield, using external electrodes, he activated that part of the brain and the person's hand went up. When he asked the subject what happened, he said, my hand went up. And he asked, did you raise your hand? The subject said, no, I didn't, you did.
Later, when he deactivated that electrode, the hand fell down. And the subject said, I didn't put my hand down, you did. So now, the brain and the hand are connected together as a functional unit.
But the initiator of the function is different from both the hand and the brain. In the second case, the initiator was Dr. Penfield who activated that part of the brain. Who was the activator in the first case? Later, Dr. Penfield activated different parts of the brain, but none of them gave the person the feeling that I am doing the action.
So, like this, he did many experiments which he compiled in his book called The Mystery of the Mind. After 40 years of studying the brain, Dr. Penfield concluded the source of consciousness is extra cerebral. That means the real person, the you and me, we are not in the brain, we are separate from the brain.
Now, to understand this spiritual essence of who we are, the source of consciousness, we need a different method of acquiring knowledge. So, science looks for material explanations for material phenomena. And in that process, it misses out on any non-material factors that may be involved.
In our own life, we also use different ways of acquiring knowledge for different purposes. Now, if we want to form a relationship with someone, we want to understand their nature, their personality, then the way to know that is not by taking an x-ray of their body. The method for understanding their personality is to meet them, talk with them, spend time with them, see how they act in different situations.
So, similarly, when we want to know about the inner core of who we are, we need a different way of acquiring knowledge. So, in the same way, if we want to know who I am, then we have to take the x-ray of the body. Suppose we go for fishing and we have a fishing net whose hole is, whose holes are say, one inch by one inch.
No matter how expert we are at catching fish, no matter how long we keep the fishing net in the water, we will never be able to catch any fish which is smaller than one inch by one inch.
Similarly, science casts a net around the world to get knowledge of the world, but within that net, the non-material slips out of that net. So for understanding spiritual knowledge, we need spiritual books and spiritual method of knowing.
The Bhagavad Gita is an ancient book, ancient yoga text from India that has offered spiritual guidance to millions of people for millennia.
The Bhagavad Gita offers a three-level model of the self. The body, mind and the self, all these three comprise our existence now.
So if we compare it to a computer system, the body is like the hardware, the mind is like the software and the person, that is the soul, that is the user.
So if the software gets corrupted, then the hardware becomes useless.
Sometimes in the software, a virus comes and then we just click one button and the virus can delete all our files. Like that, in the software of the mind, one negative thought can come and that negative thought can destroy us. I come from India where there is a lot of competition in education.
So in one of the most prestigious medical colleges in India, there was a girl, she was the first in her whole college for seven semesters. And she was, she had studied well enough to again come first in the last semester also. But somehow a few days before the final exam, she got a thought, what if I can't come first? What will happen to my prestige, what will happen to my position? I have achieved such fame, what will happen to all that if I don't come first? And that fear became like a virus that deleted all her intelligence.
And just because of that fear, a few days before her exam, she committed suicide. So this inside us, there is some enemy, just like in a computer, there can be a software, there is a virus which works against us, like that inside us, there is an enemy. So once there was a woman, she somehow got the idea that there is a frog in my stomach.
So she would go to a doctor, doctor there is a frog in my stomach, I can feel it, please remove it. And the doctor told her, there is no frog at all, it cannot survive there or you would not survive if it is there. There is no frog over there.
And she just couldn't accept it. She went to one doctor, second doctor, third doctor, ten doctors she went to. Then the eleventh doctor, when he heard her story, he decided to out trick her.
He told her, you are right, there is a frog and we have to do surgery to remove this frog. And then he gave her anaesthesia and did some small incisions on her stomach and asked a nurse to go to a nearby pond and get a frog from there. So the doctor gave her anaesthesia, she stayed there sleeping deeply, opened her stomach a little, closed it and while the nurse said, bring me a frog from the nearby pond.
When she came back to consciousness, he showed her, this was the frog and we have removed it from the stomach. So she was so happy, thank you doctor, thank you, you have saved my life. So she was so happy, thank you doctor, thank you, you have saved my life.
So she was very happy and all the nurses and all the hospital staff thought that this was something very good from the doctor, that what he did was very intelligent. The doctor that frog had babies was still inside. So when the mind gets caught by some idea, then it just hooks on to it like a virus, when it comes in a software, it does not go out very easily.
So when the software is corrupted by a virus, at that time, the only solution is to get a good antivirus programme. We can improve the hardware, maybe get a new motherboard, get a new CPU, get a new RAM, none of that will solve the problem. So we can improve the hardware, we can buy the best keyboard possible, the best CPU, the best RAM, but none of that will solve the problem.
But they are not the solution. A software problem has to be solved at the level of the software, not the hardware. So the problem of a negative attitude that is inside us, that cannot be solved by making changes outside us.
So the best way to bring order in our inner world, to remove the virus that is there in the software of our mind, is spirituality. So spirituality has many aspects to it. The most central in it is meditation.
So meditation essentially means, not just sitting in some posture, but it means shifting our thoughts from changing material things to unchanging spiritual reality. So meditation does not necessarily mean sitting in a place, in a meditation posture, but meditation essentially means changing the way of thinking, the way of focussing on something material that is changing all the time, on something spiritual that is always permanent. When we learn to practise meditation, then our attention becomes focused.
Suppose you are reading a book in the night using a table lamp. And if someone keeps shaking the table lamp, then you can't focus, you can't read properly because the light is not coming on it steadily. Similarly, when the mind inside us is agitated, it is disturbed, then whatever we do, we can't focus on it.
So for a student who is trying to study and the lamp is shaking continuously, the student can try to study for one hour and maybe able to study only for 10 minutes actually, because that much only they will be able to read. But if they take some time out and study the lamp, then afterwards in 10 minutes, they will be able to study more than what they would have been able to study earlier in one hour. The time we spend on meditating is like the time spent on stabilising the lamp.
The time spent in stabilising the lamp is not an expenditure, it is an investment which will give rich returns. The same applies to the time that we invest in meditation. By learning to meditate, we can use whatever power we have effectively.
So there are different forms of meditation which all can help us in different ways. The most accessible form of meditation is that which doesn't ask us to rise to a higher level, but which comes down to our level and helps us rise. So mantra meditation is that form of accessible meditation.
The mantra is a special sound which is filled with spiritual power to lift us up. So wherever we are, if we rise above the situation, we don't feel so agitated. If we are in a boat which is caught in a storm, we will feel agitated.
But if somebody comes in a rescue helicopter and lifts us out of the boat, above, then we won't feel so agitated, we will feel secure. So whatever situation we are in, meditation lifts us above that situation, like a person lifted up from a boat to a helicopter. Disturbances will come in life, but if we learn to meditate, then they will not disturb us.
So the best mantra for meditating is called the Hare Krishna mantra. This mantra is Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Ram, Hare Ram, Ram Ram, Hare Hare. So by learning to focus the mind on mantra meditation, we can learn to find calmness within ourselves.
That calmness acts like the antivirus which removes the negativity within the mind. Then whatever we are trying to do, we can do it much more effectively. So our ability to tap our ability is enhanced by our spirituality.
So our spirituality, our meditation, it won't take away your work time, it will take away your worry time. Now do all of you have a daily worry time? Morning 5 o'clock to 6 o'clock, every day I wake up and worry. Do you have time like that? You have time for worrying like that? You daily allocate, this is the time when I will worry? No, we don't do like that.
Worrying is like an energy sucker that is constantly there in the background, taking away our energy. Like sometimes in our phone, we may have some apps which run in the background and they suck a lot of power. So I charge my phone in the morning and in 4 hours it is just 5% remaining.
I have not used the phone, but that app has sucked away all the power. So worry is like that background app which sucks away our energy. So we wake up in the morning with energy to do a lot of work and if worry is going on in the background, then after 3-4 hours, we feel completely de-energised, completely depressed, thinking I can't do anything, there are too many problems in life.
So just like a good antivirus software will stop the background apps which are consuming the energy, similarly, spiritual practise of meditation stops worry from taking away our energy and time. So meditation connects us with the power of the infinite and thus enables us to do whatever we are doing with greater focus, with greater effectiveness, greater power. So I will summarise the 4 parts of this talk, discover you inside and power.
So I discussed about how all discovery moves from physical specific things to invisible universal principles. Similarly, we can discover inwards to look and understand who I actually am. So the real you is not your body, your body and brain, all the cells change, but you remain the same.
I discussed two examples for this, one is a paper on which a message is written, all the molecules of that paper are changed, but the message remains the same. Like that, all our body cells change, but we remain the same. Similarly, I discussed a second example of Dr. Penfield's experiment, where the source of consciousness is extra cerebral.
Then for inner, I discussed about how we need a different method apart from modern science to understand the inner world. Just as an x-ray cannot tell us about the personality of a potential partner, just as a fishing net cannot catch fish smaller than its whole size. Similarly, science cannot tell us about non-material aspects of reality.
The spiritual text of Bhagavad Gita helps us to understand that inside us, there is a three-level existence, body, mind and soul, which are like the hardware, software and the user. How negative thoughts can corrupt the software of the mind and delete our intelligence, for that I gave two examples. The medical student who became panicky, what will happen if I don't come first in my final exam and the lady who thought that there is a frog in my stomach.
So, inside us, there is some force which acts against us. So, just as software problems cannot be solved by improving the hardware, similarly inside problems cannot be solved by improving outside things. So, we can change the internal, remove the corruption in the software of the mind by the spiritual practise of mantra meditation.
So, for the power of meditation, I gave two examples. One is a person caught in a storm, lifted above and feeling safe. And the second example of a student trying to study with a shaky lamp, trying to stabilise the lamp will be an investment which will enable the student to study better.
Similarly, investing time in meditation is like stabilising the lamp of our mind, that will be not an expenditure but an investment. Meditation won't take away our work time, it will take away our worry time. And whatever we are doing in our life, we will be able to do it more effectively and proactively.
Thank you. Do you have any time for questions? Yes. He's asking what kind of books you have and which books will you be coming to me to read?
How can one start the meditation and start with this world of meditation? The practise of meditation, the practise of meditation, especially mantra meditation, is very simple. You can write down the mantra and just learn to recite it again and again. Y trata de repetir o recitar nuevamente, nuevamente, nuevamente, repetir.
And just focus on trying to hear the mantra. You can envision the mantra to be like an elevator, and by your attention you are entering into the elevator.
If we just enter into the elevator, it will lift us up. Similarly, if we just hear the mantra, we will enter into that sound, and that sound will lift us up.
We can start by five or ten minutes of meditation.
Just repeat the mantra again and again for five or ten minutes. Most important for meditation is not just the practise of meditation, but also the association of others who are practising meditation.
Now, our desires are not just linear, they are triangular. Entonces, nuestros deseos, desires, right? Desires.
That means that we don't desire to do something always just by seeing that thing. Entonces, nosotros normalmente no deseamos algo solamente viendo la cosa.
We get the desire to do that thing by seeing others doing that thing.
For example, a few months ago, this new video game has come, Pokémon Go. So now, when somebody may have heard the first time Pokémon Go, okay, what is this game? It was just a new game.
But then if you see someone pressing buttons trying to catch Pokémon, he's completely lost in that. Then by seeing that person, oh, I also want to play this.
So, our desire for the game comes not just by seeing the game, but by seeing others playing that game.
So that is a triangle. I, the game, and other persons, other people playing that game. Entonces, nuestro deseo no viene solamente viendo el juego, sino viendo otra gente jugando el juego.
Entonces, es un triángulo. Yo, el juego, y la gente. Es un triángulo.
Similarly, for practising meditation, just by doing meditation, our desire may not grow so much. But if the triangle between us, others practising meditation, and the activity of meditation, then we will grow and practise meditation wholeheartedly and benefit from it enormously.
So, spirituality involves both things, meditation and association of those practising meditation.
So, we also have a special club for those who are interested in practising meditation. And if you are interested, you can also join that club.
Thank you.
Any other questions? Muchas gracias. He is asking, nowadays there is a lot of bullying going on in the world. A lot of? Bullying.
Bullying. So, what happens is that, that focusses to low the estimation of the person, to criticise the person, blaspheme the person, tell such negative things about him, that he starts feeling very low. So, one, as a victim, what can one do as a victim of this, to block this away, and not that affect to oneself? Firstly, there is something which has to be done at a social or institutional level, and something that has to be done at an individual level.
Individual.
So, if the bullying is physical, which is, then the authorities should be informed, so that they can take the necessary action to stop the bullies from repeating their actions. Obviously. Okay, just negative.
Okay, understood. Yeah. That brings us to the individual.
Yeah. See, that brings us to the individual level. Because they are generally individual.
Yeah. So, we all have to choose whom we hear from. Choose our association.
So, sometimes some people, just let me complete this, yeah. So, there will always be some people who will criticise us.
And there will be some people who will be neutral, there will be some people who will be encouraging us. So, we cannot avoid people who are going to criticise us.
They are just there in the world and sometimes they may criticise. But if we have a circle of people where we are accepted, where we are valued, then we are able to tolerate the negativity that can come from other sources. So, do you want me to translate or they can understand it directly? Yeah.
Yeah. Do you want to translate that? Okay. So, usually in any situation, in any situation where there is an unexpected problem, we basically have three options.
Change the situation, change ourselves or walk away from the situation.
That means if somebody is criticising us and they are speaking something which is wrong, then we give the facts by which we correct that situation. But there are sometimes people who are just not ready to accept the truth.
They simply want to believe their own thing.
So, then we just walk away from that situation. ¿Qué hacemos? Salimos de esa situación, caminamos y salimos de esa situación. Because we have more important things to do in life than to try to change the minds of people who are determined to believe what they want to believe.
And the third option is change yourself. Sometimes, we may have done something, which may be small also, but that has provoked them and that's why they are doing such a thing.
So, if there is something we can do to change ourselves, which can decrease their criticism, that also we can do.
Entonces, yo debo entender y pensar, ok, pues mi error inicial, yo voy a corregirme. The most important thing is to never become discouraged.
Even if we are wrong, still, to correct that wrong, we need some amount of self-confidence, some amount of encouragement.
Failure is an event, it is never a person. That means a person may do something wrong and that wrong thing which they have done, that is an event.
The person themselves is not a failure, the person themselves is not bad. And we have to differentiate, ok, there may be something wrong here I may have done, or these people may be speaking something wrong about us, but we should treat it simply as an event. Don't take it as a personal statement about ourselves.
If we have a spiritual understanding of life, then our spiritual understanding defines who we are. But if we don't have the spiritual understanding, then the social circle around us defines who we are.
Ahí van a decidir quien soy yo, va a definir a mí. So a social misdefinition or misrepresentation of who we are can be countered by spiritual understanding of who we are.
Thank you. You're welcome. Entonces, no sé, ¿ustedes tienen clases o no tienen clases?
Okay.
How does one do to… How does one do so that one can battle with an attack of fear? Before the creativity of a new design or something, oh, this will go bad. Oh, I may not be able to accomplish this. So that fear is there.
How can one combat with that fear? The courage is not absence of fear. El coraje no es ausencia de temor. Courage is the presence of dedication to a cause greater than fear.
Courage is the presence of… Es la presencia… Courage es la presencia de la… Courage is the presence of… Dedication to a cause greater than fear. No sé si entendí.
¿Repitamos nuevamente? It's like soldiers when they go fighting to defend their country. It is not that they are not afraid. But their love for their country is greater than their fear for their life.
So, similarly, when we are trying to do something creative, something adventurous, at that time, if we find out some project, some cause for which we are very inspired, then that positive inspiration to that cause will enable us to overcome whatever fear we may have in trying to do it.
So, spiritual wisdom helps us understand that actually it is by the higher arrangement of God that I have some abilities and it is by His higher arrangement that I have this situation, this opportunity to use the ability.
So, if we think that using this ability is the way I am serving God, then we know that actually God sees the heart, the world sees the result.
That means in the world's eyes, only when we succeed was our effort worthwhile.
But in God's eyes, just by making the effort, we are successful.
Cultivating devotion to whatever it is that field of work we are trying to do, in the mood of service to God, we can overcome the fears that may be there.
