Do we need to resist a material desire that is a need?
If a desire is coming from a need and not just because of infatuation say if we have a big family and we need a five seater car but we need a seven seater car then should we try to block that desire also see just like the food that we eat nobody can dictate to us how much you should eat sometimes you may over eat sometimes you may under eat over a period of time we ourselves learn how much I should eat so similarly as far as our material life is concerned what all to perceive in our material life is a decision that we ourselves have to take and just as there is a possibility usually that we can over eat or we can under eat but most often the possibility of over eating is more than the possibility of under eating so in Ayurveda the principle is if you have an ape while eating if you think should I eat this or not that means you have eaten enough no need to eat it because when I am hungry there is no question only should I eat it or not, just eat it so the tendency is towards over eating so like that similarly in our material life also the tendency is towards over accumulation so we have to guard against that tendency but that does not mean that every desire for a material thing is necessarily is an unhealthy desire or an unspiritual or anti-spiritual desire so primarily when I was talking about temptations I was talking primarily about see we sometimes differentiate between material and spiritual now there is a important differentiation but even within the material there can be classification the material also there can be pro-devotional non-devotional, anti-devotional so for example if somebody is attracted to some pleasure that are anti-devotional then that we have to give up but sometimes some material things may also be pro-devotional now if I get a job at a place which is far away from devotees and I get another job which is close to devotees where I get a job is material but one particular thing is pro-material sorry one particular material thing is pro-devotional so now seeking for something material which can make our life easier it can be pro-devotional and if it is pro-devotional then it is not necessary that we have to block it but it is we have to think maturely about it so one way to decide if a particular desire is really necessary or not is to press a pause button like I said that when the spike comes at that time when the spike is there it just makes us irrational so when the spike comes it is almost that we can't our intelligence our thought process becomes overwhelmed so rather than acting on it if a desire comes we just press a pause button okay I am not going to decide this right now and if the same desire or as you said a need a same need is felt consistently then you can say okay this is something which I need and then you can pursue to get it and how we pursue to get it also we have to do it in a equitable way in a balanced way that means sometimes I may get a particular comfort or a particular need but then in trying to get that I may coat so much anxiety if I decide I want a very big house okay and in that big house you know I can maybe invite devotees and we can have nice programs over there that is fine but then I take such a big house and the mortgage of this is so much that leave alone inviting devotees I myself can't go for programs because I have to pay that mortgage I have to take two jobs I have to work overtime so it's like we have to know our capacity that means if again sometimes if I am lifting I can lift 10 kg weight I can lift 11 or 12 kg but if I start lifting 20 kg it becomes unbearable it will cause an accident so we have to know our capacity and if something is a need it's not necessary to stop it to stop that desire but that also has to whether that is a genuine need and not only genuine need whether that is a need that is fulfillable in a balanced way that we need to patiently decide so generally this kind of decisions where a significant amount of commitment is going to be required to fulfill that it is good to decide this when we are in the mode of goodness not when we are in the mode of passion mode of passion means I am running around doing things and that time I get this it will be so convenient that time we can't really think so well but when we are calm when we are reflective at that time I think do I really need this then if we evaluate then that helps us to make a decision sometimes what we could do is if we want to make a major investment in some material thing then we can maybe write down why I want to do this and then why I need this or what are my concerns about it and then we just leave it maybe after one week after one month we revisit it and at that time we look at it hey you know I thought this was important it is not all that important and this is actually quite important this is quite a big problem at the time I thought it was not a big problem it was a big problem so basically if you write things down then that is like taking a snapshot of our mind it is like a snapshot of our mind and then I look back at it again oh I was thinking like this but this thinking is not so sound oh yeah this makes sense I should believe so if we find that that our thoughts stay the same over a consistent period of time then then we will say okay this means this is the way I am thinking this is important for me and I have some reasons for doing this then we can do it otherwise we will ourselves you know there is a there is a American comedian who said that you know I have strong opinions and I strongly disagree with them what that means is I hold a particular opinion at a particular time but afterward I don't agree with that so our mind also keeps changing at times so if we find the same kind of thoughts are going on consistently then that means it is not just a spike of desire it is like a steady need that we are feeling then we can definitely go ahead with it. Does that answer your question? Thank you.
