Gaur Purnima class – How Lord Chaitanya defeated the attacks of Kali and how he empowers us to defeat those attacks
We are assembled today on the specious occasion of Shri Gaur Purnima the appearance day of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and we will discuss something about the purpose and the process of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu The world we live in is a place of deception things here are not the way they appear to be and this causes us trouble to no end nowadays many people get burned in relationships because people appear to be something but they turn out to be something else so among the many fears that people have through different times some researches did some surveys based on general understanding what are the fears of people in the 17th century 18th century, 19th century, 20th century 1950s, 1970s 2000s 2010 2020 decade they found in the 21st millennium some fears were always common but two fears were added one was the fear of terrorists not so much there in the past second is the fear of rejection when we try to form a relationship with someone and another person rejects us, betrays us, lets us down it's enormous insecurity that is there and this often happens because while functioning in the world we look at people, we try to assess them and it's largely based on appearance but how things appear to be they are not like that how people appear to be, they are often not like that so amidst such illusion there are three broad ways in which people respond Krishna talks about this in the Bhagavad Gita as Raga, Bhaya and Grodha Raga means attachment infatuation if this, I get this I'll become happy it may be this relationship, it may be this position it may be this possession whatever it is or if we have tried many times to get something and we don't get it and then or we get it but it doesn't make us happy then there is Bhaya, there is fear there is fear of exploring anything new, let me just withdraw into my shell and stay safe so where people just become averse to everything and they become like touch me nots keeping everybody away or some people go into Grodha Grodha is anger the anger may be explicit where they just shout at others become irritable towards others or it may be just at a subtle level resentment of things and all these three basically desire fear and anger they prevent us from experiencing the fullness of life because all these three they cause our consciousness to be misdirected when we desire worldly things then our consciousness gets captivated by whatever it is that we are attached to when we are filled with fear in the case of desire we are just looking where will I get pleasure when we are filled with fear we are just worried from where danger will come upon and when there is anger we are just trying to find out whom can I bash whom can I attack the one major difference between desire and anger is that in desire the source of the desire and the target of desire are the same if I see something attractive I want to eat it, so that is the source of the desire the target of the desire, how will I get it but in anger it's two different things somebody makes us angry but quite often that person is too influential too powerful, so we can't hit back at that person, so we hit somebody else so the source of anger is A, but the target of anger is B and in that way people stay lonely, isolated, distressed so Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is known as Kaliyugapavan Kalibhayanashin so Kaliyugapavan, he purifies the whole age of Kali and Kalibhayanashin Kalibhayanashin destroys the fear of this age of Kali so Krishna when he descends in this world he talks about this, how if we take shelter of him, we become free from this, in 4.10 in the Bhagavad Gita he says Vita Raga Bhaya Krodha Manmaya Mamupashita Bahavo Gyana Tapasa Puta Madbhava Magataha Vita Raga Bhaya Krodha these three factors which tend to agitate our minds, which prevent us from experiencing the richness of life, when we can put them aside, and we can put them aside how? Manmaya when we start thinking of the Lord, Mamupashita and take shelter of him, and Krishna assures that by doing this Bahavo Gyana Tapasa many in the past have become purified by understanding knowledge, Gyana Tapasa so understanding these truths of life, it requires some austerity, cultivating the Gyana requires Tapasya, but when we do that, Puta Madbhava Magataha we become purified, and Madbhavam, one will attain eternal ecstatic love for Krishna, Bhava, emotion in relationship with Krishna so this applies to every descent of the Lord, Sambhavami Yuge Yuge, as it is said in 4.8 then the Lord comes again and again millennia after millennia so now when Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descended to this world he came specifically to protect the world from the influence of the age of Kali sometimes the Lord is called as Tri Yugi Tri Yugi means one who descends in three ages so the implication is he comes in Sat Yuga, Tri Yuga and Gapa Yuga but he doesn't come in Kali Yuga now what does it mean actually it's sometimes if we go to some parts of a city say Mumbai or Chicago where there is a lot of crime in some parts of the city, and if we go there and we get mugged we get robbed and then we go to the police and we complain to the police police will tell why did you go there, even we don't go there so the idea is that Kali Yuga is such a terrible age that even the Lord doesn't come here so in that sense the Lord is said to be Tri Yugi however this is one way of understanding but the Lord is not simply a law maker or a law protector he is the compassionate benevolent well wisher, father and dear most friend of all living beings so when Kali Yuga there is great spiritual disaster at that time the Lord doesn't abandon Kali Yuga but he comes even more so in Kali Yuga so it's said there is a charitable person and if anybody approaches the charitable person for some help naturally the charitable person will give some charity but if there is a natural calamity there is an earthquake there is a hurricane a few months ago I was also in America only when there was a big hurricane nearby going through so if that causes disaster then that actually increases the charitable spirit of a charitable person and there the charitable person will give more charity similarly Kali Yuga is an age which is a spiritual disaster and in this age rather than the Lord forsaking this rather his benevolence becomes more and more and thus in this age he descends but as a channa avatar as a hidden incarnation he comes for the purpose not simply of establishing his divinity but for teaching how to be a devotee Sri Prabhupada explains in lecture that Krishna taught that give up all your nonsense Sri Prabhupada translates that all your nonsense just surrender to me so but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came and taught how to surrender so it is said that some teachers teach and some teachers demonstrate and thereby they teach so Lord Chaitanya is like a teacher who personally demonstrates how to practise bhakti how to surrender to Krishna and that is his mercifulness so how Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu overcame the forces of Kali and thereby how he can empower us to overcome the forces of Kali is depicted in a dramatic way by one of the prominent scholarly followers of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Kavi Karunapur in his book Chaitanya Chandrodaya Nataka Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's life and past times are described in many different books so the books that we normally refer to is Chaitanya Charitam which Sri Prabhupada translated and commented Chaitanya Bhagwat which is also a very beautiful book replete with rich devotional emotions written by Vrindavan Das Thakur so one of the most scholarly and artistic among the followers of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was Kavi Karunapur so he has written many books one of them is Chaitanya Chandrodaya Nataka so Nataka means it's a drama Chaitanya Chandra Uday how the moon of lord Chaitanya arose in this world so there in he depicts a discussion between Kali and Adharma so there is Kali is reigning supreme and Adharma is his assistant so in the world there are subtle forces which affect how we function so there are certain places which we go to now our thoughts, our desires get shaped in particular ways say for example somebody may be a very sober person but if they just go to a bar and they see everybody else drinking, he's got a desire I should also drink over here now it is not just the association of the people over there but it's also the influence of the atmosphere so there are subtle forces which shape how we think how we desire, how we act they don't force us but they prompt us in particular ways so each age in time has its own subtle atmosphere and that atmosphere is shaped by the predominating deity so Kali is the predominating deity of this age and Kali reigns supreme through Adharma the king has a commander through whom the king executes his fights so Adharma means irreligiosity is the way when people start becoming Adharmic they come under the control of Kali so Kali and Adharma are discussing and at one moment Kali is jubilant yes now I have conquered over the whole of the earth and it's my rule over here and then suddenly Kali becomes oh no I am defeated, I am ruined my rule is over now so Adharma says what has happened? you are the king, who can defeat you? he says in Navadweep, Mayapur a young brahmana boy has appeared and he is going to topple my rule Adharma says what is this? why are you so afraid? you have overpowered great kings you have made great sages fall down nobody can resist your power what can a brahmana boy do? he says he is not just an ordinary boy he is the greatest of all beings, he is the lord of all the Devatas, he is the Deva he is the person whom I cannot stand in front of so Adharma starts thinking and he says okay it doesn't matter we have got three great agents we have got lust we have got greed we have got anger so let us use this and we will overcome everyone so then they start plotting so initially as lord Chaitanya comes from his childhood to his youth so Kali is plotting so Kali says that let us get this young boy Nimai who has now become Nimai Pandit very scholarly he arranges for him to get married to a very beautiful, chaste cultured lady and then he will get caught in worldly life and he will forget about his mission so he sends an attack of lust and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Shri Nimai what happens to him? he is unaffected so he stays unaffected and Kali gets very disturbed then he says maybe lust alone is not enough let me attack with greed also normally brahmanas Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appears in Kali when a brahmana family so brahmanas are not very wealthy that is Vaishyas and Kshatriyas, Vaishyas are business people who are wealthy and Kshatriyas are kings they also have a lot of money but the intellectuals the teachers, they are not said to have a lot of wealth but when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in Bengal from there he went to Bangladesh what is now Bangladesh southern part of India and there he taught various subjects he was an expert English grammar teacher Sanskrit grammar teacher he started teaching and his learning was so great that what would take other teachers several years to teach he would teach within a matter of months and wherever he went people were so pleased with him that they showered gifts upon gifts upon gifts and in this way he became fabulously wealthy simply through his expertise in teaching and now Kali thought yes I arrange for people to give so many gifts and he took all the gifts also now he will become infatuated with wealth and he will forget about his mission against me but then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he would receive the gifts and he would just give away the gifts he would take the gifts which he would get as a Brahmana and he would give away the gifts also Brahmana's function is not just to take charity Brahmana is also meant to give charity that yajan, yajan, pathan, pathan daan, parigraha yajan is to perform yajna to teach others to perform yajna to study scripture and to help others study scripture to teach scripture to others to receive charity and to give charity so normally those who are Brahmanas they give charity of knowledge that they teach and they teach in a mood of charity they don't demand anything for that but if somebody gives they accept but if they get a lot of charity of things also they just give it away so Kali observed this and said he is not getting allured at all so what to do so when he came back from his tours to India, back to Bengal at that time by the will of providence his young wife was bitten by a snake and she passed away but at that time Kali decided to attack again and Kali influenced persuaded the relatives of Nimai that let him marry again and again he got married now this time I will travel but again Chaitanya Mahaprabhu remained detached he went to Gaya to perform the last rites of his father till that time now Jagannath Mishra had passed away quite some time ago and Nimai did not immediately go to Gaya but in this particular year he went to Gaya so there was a particular plan going on that this was the year when the great saint Ishwar Puri came to Gaya and just at the time when Nimai Pandit happened to be there Ishwar Puri was also there or rather the time when Ishwar Puri was there, Nimai Pandit also happened to be there and in Gaya when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu saw the beautiful lotus feet of Vishnu and then he saw the great devotee of Vishnu that had a profound effect on him Krishna's attractiveness manifests to us primarily through his devotees that Krishna may be all attractive but how do we realise that it is by associating with those who are attracted to him our desires are not just linear they are also triangular what does it mean linear desires means that we see something I feel it's attractive and I want it so for example suppose after this programme there is feast, there is no suppose there is a feast over there but suppose there is a particular delicious item say there is a gulab jamun then now I want to eat it so we see it and we get a desire this is a linear desire we see the object and we get a desire for it but suppose there is some some new item which you have never heard about and you have never seen and we see it should I take it or should I not take it just seeing it does not immediately trigger the desire but say there is a friend who we see friend is going there he takes it and eats it delicious so as soon as you say oh give me also so here what will happen the desire didn't come simply by seeing that object the desire was not just linear but triangular the object was there we were here and the desire was here so when we saw somebody sorry the other person was here we saw that other person enjoying that object that triggered the desire within us in fact this triangularity of desires is what is tapped by advertisers when they get celebrity endorsements say a new smartphone comes up so many new smartphones keep coming up now a days but then they will show some sports star some movie star this is the phone which I use oh really you think its great I will take it so its triangularity of desires that they are tapping and this triangularity of desires is extremely important where the object itself may not appear especially desirable and this is what happens especially with respect to spiritual things now how many of us we may take a Bhagavad Gita and I want to study the Bhagavad Gita Ashila Prabhupada wrote Bhagavad Gita as it is many people take Bhagavad Gita as it is and then they keep it as it is laughing laughing it just becomes an object of reverence in their house its there in a sacred place maybe I will touch it and put my hand and head into it but we don't read it at all but if we associate with some devotees who are studying the Bhagavad Gita who are relishing the Gita who are coming up with fresh realisations from their study of the Gita then you start wondering is all this there in the Gita? I didn't know it at all I want to find out what is there and then by associating with them our desire becomes stimulated the Bhagavad Gita is here, we are here and those who are devoted to the Gita are here so by associating with them our desire for the Gita increases so similarly the Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he came to the Vishnupada and he offered his obeisance to Vishnupada he was also attracted to it but after that when he saw the person who was Vishnupada Jai Om Vishnupada Paramahamsa Vishnupada means one who is situated at the feet of Vishnu so its a person of Ishwara Puri when he saw how devoted he was I felt some devotion by coming here by seeing the darshan of Vishnupada's feet but on seeing this great saint I realised my devotion is insignificant I want to learn from him I want to surrender my life to him and he just offered himself he became a disciple of Sri Ishwara Puri here till now when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had come he had descended he had not manifested his devotion whenever the lord appears in this world he appears in a way that will attract the people of his times so Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came at a time when in Bengal Brahminical scholarship was very much attractive for people in fact Navadvip at that time was the capital of scholarship in India people from various parts of the country would come to learn and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared over there and there he became the top most scholar at the age of 14 when he was just a small boy normally 14 is a time when we are going to school passing out of school and going to college sometimes somebody is very precocious student they say oh this person is so intelligent they graduated at the age of 16 or this person got a PhD at the age of 18 or 19 whatever Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as Nimai Pandit he was so precocious that at the age of 14 not only had he graduated he had not just become a teacher but he had started his own school and students were coming to learn from him at a time when he should be a student he was already a teacher he was a masterly teacher and not only that he became such a great scholar one of the greatest scholars of his times Keshav Kashmiri when he came none of the Pandits of Navadvip were having the courage to face this Keshav Kashmiri because they felt we will be defeated and we will be humiliated by his scholarship Keshav Kashmiri had been blessed by Saraswati Devi that that whenever you speak I will manifest through your tongue and the scholars felt if Saraswati manifests from his tongue how can we how can we combat at all so they all became MIA missing in action just disappeared and then when Keshav Kashmiri came there he met Nimai Pandit and Nimai Pandit effortlessly defeated him and Keshav Kashmiri was devastated but Nimai Pandit was very intelligent his purpose was not to defeat defeat Keshav Kashmiri his purpose was to transform Keshav Kashmiri so he did not arrange for a public debate in a public debate if Keshav Kashmiri had been defeated then he would have felt so humiliated it would have been utterly unbearable for him so informally they just met on the banks of the Ganga Nimai Pandit happened to be teaching the students Keshav Kashmiri came at that point and they had a talk and when they had a talk at that time Nimai Pandit appeared very reverent he was a great scholar we are on the banks of the Ganga so please speak some verses glorifying Ganga and Keshav Kashmiri was delighted and started speaking and he spoke 1,2,3,4 100 verses he composed on the spur of the moment and he just recited them and all the students Nimai Pandit just tried sometimes when people are astonished their mouth falls their mouth falls open so like that all the students of Nimai Pandit were stunned and then Keshav Kashmiri when he finished then he turned towards Nimai magnificent he said we are all actually students of grammar so the verses that you have composed can you please critically review them and tell from a poetic point of view what are their good points and what are their weaknesses for my poetry there are no weaknesses in it no no no don't be offended even the compositions of great poets like there also have some weaknesses let's just critically review and he says let us recite, let us discuss the 67th verse and Nimai Pandit recited the 67th verse now Keshav Kashmiri was stunned, he said I just recited all the verses so fast how do you remember one particular verse and you remember the number of that verse also so Nimai was just very calm, he said actually by the mercy of Lord Krishna some people can compose and recite 100 verses on the spur of the moment, by the mercy of that same Lord Krishna some people can remember whatever they have remembered so here suddenly, Nimai what was he doing, he was trying to remind Keshav Kashmiri that your ability is not just your ability it is actually God's gift to you we all have certain abilities and very easy to become proud of those abilities but sometimes even the things that we are good at sometimes we can't do it well in sports for example say in cricket, sometimes a person is a very good batsman but suddenly one day they just go out of form they do bad and they just get out in a stupid way they just make some silly mistakes so it's their ability but it's not their ability alone they have that ability, it stays for some time and it goes away so I am telling this whole pastime because this was one way in which pride tried to attack Nimai so Nimai then he recited the 67th verse and then he told that now let us look at this verse and he said this is one problem here there is another problem here so he started telling various problems he says you have used the word Bhavani Bhartu so Bhava is Lord Shiva, Bhavani is the wife of Lord Shiva and Bhartu is the husband of Lord Shiva so what you are saying is the husband of the wife of Shiva so what do you mean by this are you saying that Parvati who is known as Sati, she is unchaste and she has some other husband so now Keshav Kashmir just couldn't speak just came tongue tied and the students of Nimai when they saw this great scholar completely baffled, they started laughing and Nimai immediately turned towards him, stop don't laugh at them and then he very courteously turned towards Keshav Kashmir and he says oh great scholar now you have come after a long day of travel and just came to bathe in the Ganga and you recited 100 verses, you must be very tired now so please go home take a rest, study your books and come back tomorrow and we will have our discussion we will continue our discussion so in one sense, Nimai allowed Keshav Kashmiri a graceful way out a graceful way out but still it was a defeat he did not stab his foot on his chest and say I have defeated you he just allowed him to go Keshav Kashmiri went back in tears he had a deity of Saraswati Devi who is considered the goddess of learning fell at her feet and started praying to her you had promised me that whenever I speak, you will manifest on my tongue why is it that you didn't manifest, what happened so at that time he just couldn't he fell asleep and that night Saraswati Devi came in his dream and Saraswati Devi told him that I have not given, I have not broken my promise to you but today I was speaking in front of Nimai and no words came to me why did this happen I told him I told you that you will not be defeated by anyone in this world because the person whom you met today is not of this world who is he he is the lord of my lord Saraswati Devi's lord is Brahma and Brahma's lord is Govindam Adipurusham Tamaham Bhajami is Krishna so he is Krishna himself the next morning Keshav Kashmiri came and surrendered to Nimai fell at his feet but Nimai remained very respectful oh Mahavadev, oh great one, what are you doing I am simply a grammar teacher you are a great scholar, why are you falling at feet like this, picked him up very respectfully he says no no, you are the lord himself I am sorry I was so proud then Nimai told him learning your learning is phenomenal but your pride will destroy all the learning avoid pride and use your learning to glorify the source of your learning it is Krishna himself and Keshav Kashmiri thereafter became a great devotee so Nimai Pandit here was tempted by pride he could have championed the whole world see I defeated this great scholar but Nimai did not do that he defeated Keshav Kashmiri but he did not destroy his honour so quite often when we get into arguments with people sometimes we get some understanding from scripture and we find that other person has wrong understanding so then we want to counter them but sometimes in arguing arguing we may win the argument but we lose the person because that person feels so irritated so alienated offended and just go away so we have to be sensitive by which our purpose is not just to win the argument our purpose is to win the hearts of people so that their hearts can come closer to Krishna so Kali tried to infatuate Nimai with the pride of scholarship Nimai had enormous scholarship and he had reason to be proud but still he didn't become proud then Kali decided ok this doesn't work let me attack him with anger now sometimes our anger can be unjustified now somebody has done something small wrong and he has become very angry disproportionately but sometimes somebody has done something very seriously wrong and that time we can say our anger is justified the important thing is not whether anger is justified or unjustified the important thing is what is the result of that anger if by that expression of anger things are going to get worse then it doesn't serve any purpose so how did Kali try to instigate anger in Lord Chaitanya this happened through the Leela of Jagai and Madai Jagai and Madai they are typical representatives of the degrading power of the age of Kali Jagai and Madai were Jagadananda and Madhavananda they were born in cultured Brahminical families but by bad association this got completely spoiled they started committing all kinds of atrocious wrong doings and so much so that if virtuous people would see them also they would feel they have become contaminated keep a long distance away and yet Nithyananda Prabhu decided that I am going to deliver them Nithyananda Prabhu felt that if these two people now people think that when they see Jagai and Madai they feel we have become contaminated we need to take a bath in Ganga to purify ourselves but in future I can make these Jagai and Madai so pure that people will feel by seeing Jagai and Madai we have become purified as if we are bathed in the Ganga then by doing this the glory of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu will spread all over the world because Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was the person who purified and delivered these people so Nithyananda Prabhu made a plan like this and just to increase the drama when the lord performs pastimes he often performs them in a very dramatic way so first Nithyananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur they approached Jagai and Madai and Jagai and Madai went mad and came to attack them and Nithyananda Prabhu his god himself but just to increase the drama he just ran away from there and Haridas Thakur said you should have some discretion don't just approach anyone these people are drunkards what are they going to understand we should not have gone to them only Haridas Thakur said we are going to be destroyed today somehow they ran away the next time Nithyananda Prabhu again approached when he approached and please he says that lord Chaitanya has come and he is delivering the whole world you are here in the place of his birth place but there itself you are being with the mercy of lord Chaitanya just chant the holy names you will be delivered so when they heard this Madai got furious in Sanskrit there is a saying Updesho hi murkhana prakopaya na shantaye if there are foolish people if you try to instruct them they don't become pacified they become agitated so Madai felt who do you think you are you think you want to instruct us I will teach you a lesson and he had been drinking liquor so he had a pot of liquor he just took that and now he was heftily built hurled the pot straight at lord Nithyananda hit him on his forehead and blood started streaming from his head because of the wound the devotees nearby they were just panicky the people there they just ran all this happened very close to the place where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was staying just ran and informed Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and as soon as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came there he saw the bloody head of Nithyananda he got furious and he just called Chakra Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna himself and Sudarshan Chakra appeared on his hand and it was so effulgent it appeared all this happened at night but it appeared as if the sun has risen again in the night and the sun was just close to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's hands and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was about to throw that Chakra and chop off the heads of Jagai and Madai who had dared to assault his dear devotee Nithyananda and Kali was watching this in glee thinking that now Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is going to give into anger and that lord who has come to attract people with the message of love is going to get angry use weapons and going to disrupt his mission but Kali's joy was premature why? because the lord doesn't come alone he comes with his associates and he was angry but Nithyananda Prabhu is Akaroda Paramananda Nithyananda Ram means he never gets angry so what happened? Nithyananda Prabhu immediately turned to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and said wait, wait my lord he said you were attacking both of them but when Madai hit me and he wanted to hit me a second time Jagai came in the way and he stopped me Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said oh Jagai, you protected my devotee and he embraced Jagai and Madai said oh lord, as soon as Jagai was embraced just by the touch of the lord he was transformed Madai saw this and he said my dear lord he saw Jagai is blessed by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Jagai and both of us have been equal partners in everything that we have done all the crimes we have done, we have done them equally so if he is receiving your mercy I should also be the equal partner I should also receive the mercy he said no, you offended my devotee you will never receive my mercy Chaitanya Mahaprabhu turned towards the lord he said my dear lord actually it is just a small scratch a small wound but somehow because of my own bad karma some blood has flowed but if I have done anything ever to please you if I have done any pious activity my dear lord in exchange for all the piety and service that I have done please give me a charity please give me the bodies of these two people please spare Jagai and Madai and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu spoke this tears came from both the eyes of Jagai and Madai to see how compassionate was this person and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu heard this he told Madai I cannot forgive you because you have offended Nithyananda so Madai fell at Nithyananda's feet Nithyananda embraced him and then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu embraced him and then Jagai and Madai started dancing in kirtans and then as all the devotees came and started dancing in kirtans Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stopped the kirtan in between he said now watch all of you and he said suddenly he was looking at Jagai and Madai in a very compassionate way as he was looking at them suddenly some dark black kind of object emanated from their bodies it emanated from their bodies and entered into the body of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and this lord who was golden in complexion suddenly his complexion turned black so Chaitanya Mahaprabhu looked at everyone and said what do you see so Advaita Acharya very gently says we see that Gaurachandra has now become Krishnachandra that lord who was golden in complexion has now become dark in complexion Chaitanya Mahaprabhu smiled and he said what you saw just now is the sins of Jagai and Madai I have taken them all upon myself and now I will destroy all of them and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu started dancing in kirtans and his golden complexion came back again and he said Jagai and Madai are freed from all sins when Kali saw this happening he just fell down his head in his hands he had tried to he had instigated Madai so that he would absolve Dhyananda and through that he wanted to provoke Chaitanya Mahaprabhu but his plan had been completely baffled then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu after that he started travelling all over the country far and wide he would go and wherever he would go he would just inundate people with love for Krishna just by seeing him, just by hearing him just by seeing him dance seeing him sing everybody would get infected with love for Krishna and this way Chaitanya Mahaprabhu brought a flood of love of God by which the whole world became inundated and what exactly is this flood of love of God actually conclude with these two points now when we talk about the mercy of Lord Chaitanya what exactly is his mercy there are many different avatars have come and they all have established dharma but for establishing dharma what do they do they destroy the demon demoniac people so the Lord comes, he establishes dharma and those who are adharmic those who are demonic the Lord destroys them but in Kaliyuga if the Lord started destroying the demonic everybody would be destroyed because everybody has demonic tendencies within their heart so what to do the Lord does not use physical weapons to destroy the demonic physically the Lord uses his beauty, the Lord uses his sweetness the Lord uses the weapon of love to destroy the demonic tendencies in the hearts of people in the hearts of people ultimately why does anyone do any bad thing why do people succumb to lust or anger or greed or pride or anything like this ultimately it's because they think these will give me pleasure if I can fulfil my lust I will enjoy if I have lots of possessions and I can parade before the world how much I have then I will enjoy I once saw an advertisement of a car it was a young man who was driving a car and there was a young girl looking with big eyes, admiration and behind was another young man glaring at him so the advertisement said buy this car and enjoy the envy in your neighbour's eyes so it's such a pathetic level of enjoyment you can't even enjoy your own car the car doesn't give you enjoyment seeing envy in other people's eyes gives you enjoyment so ultimately we succumb to all these things because they promise us pleasure the lust, anger greed, envy, pride they promise us pleasure but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu makes the supreme pleasure of devotion supremely accessible to everyone the pleasure of devotion is supreme but it is not so easily accessible but through the chanting of the holy names, through the practise of bhakti Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he not only first of all he doesn't destroy the demonic but he destroys the demonic tendencies how does he destroy the demonic tendencies? by taking away what makes those demonic tendencies seem attractive they promise us pleasure but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu promises and delivers far greater pleasure and when one experiences that pleasure when one experiences that pleasure then the lower pleasures that are there in this world they just become unalluring bhakti is a process by which bhakti is a process by which we get the experience of the supreme lord and this experience is so fulfilling that one just becomes detached from other things this is not that important detached doesn't mean irresponsible detached simply means that we don't become obsessed with those things so in this way this process of bhakti and the higher taste that comes from bhakti Chaitanya Mahaprabhu makes it very easily accessible and by his mercifulness this higher taste of bhakti is available now to anyone and everyone all over the world Srila Prabhupada took that mercy of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and spread it all over the world Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came and spread it all over the country India but Prabhupada took it in various parts of the world and actually speaking when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is coming he is not just providing mercy in the sense that he is removing the demonic tendencies in our heart rather he is also giving us access to the highest joys of the spiritual world Chaitanya Mahaprabhu described he is Krishna himself coming in the mood of Srimati Radharani and he comes to taste the sweetness of the love that Radharani has for Krishna Krishna is the supreme source of all happiness the supreme reservoir of all happiness but that happiness can be experienced only by the heart that is open to the happiness Krishna's love for us is unconditional even now even when we are materialistic even if somebody is atheistic Krishna is present even in their hearts so in that sense Krishna's love for everyone is unconditional but our experience of Krishna's love is conditional to our state of consciousness the sun gives light to everyone but if my eyes are closed I can't see the sun similarly Krishna's love is like the sun's light it is there for everyone but sometimes our eyes get closed our eyes here don't get closed in the physical sense but we get attached to some worldly things and when we get attached to some worldly things we, even if we look at God, we see God through the filter of those worldly things, we see God's love through the filter of those things so sometimes parents may provide everything profusely to their child but the child wants one toy and the parents say no not now, I want this toy no not now, I want this no and the child starts doing tantrum crying loudly and then even children some children are so shrewd they know how to blackmail emotionally their parents also, they will say you don't love me you don't love me only and the parents have done hundreds of things for the child but the child reduces the love of the parent to the parents giving or not giving that one toy so similarly for us sometimes we get attached to certain things so those are actually our toys they may be serious things but from the ultimate perspective of eternity they are like toys and that one thing doesn't work out then we feel what is Krishna doing does Krishna even exist, does Krishna even care, so as long as we are trying to see Krishna's love through the filter of our attachments, then if that object comes, we feel yes Krishna is so good, if that doesn't come what am I doing also serving Krishna maybe I should not be doing this bhakti business at all, so because Krishna's love for us is unconditional but our perception of that love is conditional to the state of our consciousness so Chaitanya Mahaprabhu he comes to this world and he gives us all the opportunity to experience the supreme ecstasy of love for him so what I was saying is that how much we can experience Krishna's love depends on how open our heart is to him if our heart is filled with something else then we will not be able to perceive Krishna's love, but if our heart is open for Krishna to manifest and to reside over there to reign over there, then we will feel Krishna's love, so the person whose heart is most open to Krishna is Srimati Radharani she is Krishna himself manifesting as his consort so he is Krishna himself manifesting in a female form, so Krishna is God in the male form, Radharani is God in a female form now sometimes people say that some say the western religions are monotheistic Hinduism is polytheistic but no, Hinduism is not polytheistic, there is only one God, he comes in many forms so what we teach is actually not what the bhakti text is not polytheism, but it is what you call as polymorphic monotheism monotheism one God, but he comes in many forms and they are not just many forms because each form is a couple it's not just Ram, it's Sita Ram it's not just Narayan, Lakshmi Narayan so actually the bhakti understanding of God is what? polymorphic bimonotheism there is one God who comes as a couple and there are many couples like that so why I am saying this is that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna himself coming in the form of Srimati Radharani, Radharani's heart is most open to Krishna and therefore her heart is filled with Krishna's love to the greatest extent and thus she experiences the greatest ecstasy in her relationship with Krishna, so much so that Krishna feels when I live with Radharani, I don't experience the ecstasy she is experiencing she is attracted to me, but the joy that she is experiencing, I don't experience that just like if you have a lamp and the lamp gives light it gives light everywhere, but the area below the lamp does not get lit, so Krishna feels as if my heart is like the area below the lamp, you know everybody is experiencing ecstasy by loving me, but I am not experiencing it so then so Krishna wants to he is the prema he is the prema vishaya he is the object of love and the love is present in the hearts of his devotees, so his devotees are prema ashraya and he is the prema vishaya so the prema vishaya wants to become the prema ashraya so Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna who becomes Radharani Radha bhavati sumanitam navmi krishnasohopam and as in the mood of Radharani he experiences the sweetness of Krishna and when he experiences that, he shares that with others, so Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is thus his mercy comes in three different ways first is that, he doesn't destroy the demonic, he destroys the demonic tendencies second is, for destroying the demonic tendencies, he makes the highest happiness of love for God very easily accessible through the process of bhakti and thirdly, not just the love of God, but the highest level of love of God between Radharani and Krishna that is what he gives his access to such is the mercy of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and that mercy is available to all of us by the mercy of Shila Prabhupada who travelled all over the world at advanced age going far and wide to share Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's message, when Shila Prabhupada came to America, at that time he had no money, no contacts no idea where he was going to go and with who he was going to share Krishna's message how he was going to give Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy, but he had faith and he came to Tompkins Square Park and he sat down once, he was doing kirtans, and he didn't know whether anybody would sing or not but he just closed his eyes and kept singing, kept singing, kept singing and some people were following, some people were following, and Prabhupada kept singing singing, singing, and when he finally opened his eyes, he saw hundreds of people were dancing and singing over there and that was the way the Krishna consciousness movement began in the western world, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy manifested through the intense devotion of Shila Prabhupada and that mercy is now being manifested all over the world and here also today, by the mercy of Shila Prabhupada and his dedicated followers, all of us have the opportunity to know about to know about Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu and to seek his mercy so let us conclude the prayer to Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu as the most incarnation most merciful incarnation of the Lord, kindly repeat after me Namo Mahavadanyaya Namo Mahavadanyaya Krishna Prema Pradayate Krishna Prema Pradayate Krishna Krishna Chaitanya Krishna Krishna Chaitanya Namne Gauratvishe Namaha Namne Gauratvishe Namaha Namo Mahavadanyaya that Lord was supremely merciful Krishna Prema Pradayate, he has given the supreme charity of Krishna Prema so he is he is actually the same Lord Krishna who is now manifested in a golden complexion with the name of Gaura to this Lord we offer our obeisances I will quickly summarise what I spoke so I talked today about the significance of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's ascent in terms of how he through his example and through his blessings helps us overcome the influence of Kali so Kali is the age in this world where there is deception things are not the way they appear to be and nowadays we experience this especially in terms of betrayals and disappointments and relationships and so many other things also so the Lord comes and this world of illusion where Kali is ruling Kali sees that I am the ruler but Krishna has come how has Krishna come? He is Triyugi in the sense that he doesn't appear as God over here but he doesn't forsake this world he comes as a devotee of God to teach by demonstration it's like a charitable person in catastrophe becomes even more charitable similarly the Lord is even more merciful in this age and so Kali tried to attack Lord Chaitanya through lust by trying to get him married for the second time but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was not affected then tried to allure him with greed he got profuse gifts because of his teaching expertise but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu just gave away all the gifts tried to attack him through pride by getting him to defeat Keshav Kashmiri who was just a small child just a child of 14 but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu expertly far from he himself becoming proud he actually freed Keshav Kashmiri from his pride and made him into a devotee then he tried to attack Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with anger justified anger because it was his own devotee, he was on a virtuous mission was attacked brutally by this wicked people by Madai but at that time Nityanand Prabhu intervened and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu far from becoming angry not only forgave Chaitanya and Madai for that particular wrong doing of attacking Nityanand Prabhu but forgave them for all their sins took all their sins into himself and just made them exalted devotees so whatever way Kali tried to attack Chaitanya Mahaprabhu backfired those attacks and he flooded the world with love of Krishna so his Mahavadanya is supremely merciful because he doesn't destroy the demonic people but he destroys the demonic tendencies within them and destroys the demonic tendencies not just by giving some knowledge of right and wrong but he destroys it by giving access to the highest pleasure by which the pleasures from worldly temptations pale into insignificance and he is Krishna himself coming in the mood of Radha and Anki Krishna's love for us is unconditional but our experience of that love depends on the condition of our heart just as whether our eyes are open or not determines whether we can see the sun's light or not so when we see Krishna's love through the filter of our attachments then we become like a child who on seeing the parents not giving her a toy thinks that the parents don't love me at all but for the devotee whose heart is fully open to Krishna they are flooded with Krishna's love that's the state of the super most extent of Srimati Radharani so Krishna feels that I don't experience the ecstasy and he comes to experience that ecstasy and by experiencing that supreme ecstasy that a supreme devotee is relishing Chaitanya Mahaprabhu shares that and Srila Prabhupada he made that ecstasy of the holy name of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's grace available to everyone all over the world so we can pray to Srila Prabhupada and Sri Yoranga Mahaprabhu to give a drop of their mercy to us so that our hearts can also become satisfied and delighted in the sweetness of bhakti we were mentioning about Chaitanya Mahaprabhu just by people seeing him they would become devotees such was his power his influence and I was remembering also that by the mercy of Mahaprabhu and Srila Srila Prabhupada had the same influence on people just by seeing him just by seeing him they would take up devotional service their lives would be affected changed who was that man? what was he doing? so it was amazing we can see just that reflection in Prabhupada and begin to understand the effect Mahaprabhu had what a wonderful experience it would be to be there with Mahaprabhu thank you any other questions or comments? thank you very much Jai Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri Shri.
