Gauranga Shata Nama 12 – The omnipotent Lord reverses the river of desire

names of the 9 weepas are mentioned and now it is said in Navakhanda Ranganatha in all these 9 abodes Ranganatha Ranganatha is the name of celebrated deity of lord Vishnu in South India in Srirangakshetra but Ranganatha, well Ranganatha as a specific name refers to that particular deity but the very word Ranganatha generically refers to Ranganatha Ranga is to delight, to play, to sport, to enjoy basically Ranganatha, delight spiritually Navakhanda Ranganatha, which is the Mahaprabhu for the first 24 years of his life performed extraordinary pastimes in these 9 weepas of Ranganatha Navadweep and thus he was his master Ranganatha he was delighted over there he was delighted first in the early stages as a boy he was loved by everyone then as a pundit, as a scholar he was revered by everyone there many many people over there and then as a devotee for permanent devotion he captivated the hearts of people over there and not only that he himself loved this place he would travel around and he would talk with the devotees and he would remember Krishna wherever he would go so he performed wondrous pastimes and thus he was the lord who delighted in these pastimes so he was Navakhanda Ranganatha Janavi Jeevan Janavi, Janavi is one of the names of Ganga Devi it's why I said that when Ganga Devi was being brought down from the heavens by Maharaj Bhagirath it went by the hermitage of Janu Rishi who took it into his who feeling disturbed by its flowing just took it in his swallowed it up and then at the request of prayers of Bhagirath and others he released Ganga and it came out of his body through his ears because it came from Janu Rishi it's one of the reasons why it's called Janavi so Janavi Jeevan so the river is not just insentient body of water but there is a exalted deity exalted female deity who is ultimately an expansion of the goddess of fortune who manifests as the river so Janavi Jeevan so for her, for that Ganga Devi her lord, Lord Chaitanya was her lord and just as Krishna sported in Yamuna so Lord Chaitanya sported in Ganga Janavi and among the many pastimes that Lord Chaitanya performed bathing, his playing, his praying, his he debated over there on the banks of Ganga that Keshav Kashmiri defeated him he taught his students over there he danced in some kirtan over there so like that many many pastimes he performed and he captivated the heart of Janavi Devi who considered him to be her life and she strived to serve him in every way so one pastime is describes how intimately and personally Ganga would reciprocate with with Lord Chaitanya so at one time Janavi Jeevan so at one time Lord Chaitanya, one brahmana was doing Gayatri in the Ganga and normally Gayatri is to be done with the lower part of the body immersed in water so that the thread is also not visible and remaining the upper part of the torso and the head is to be outside the water and one is meant to be motionless while doing Gayatri so in this case as he was doing the Gayatri suddenly he felt the water rising and the water seemed to rise right up to his above his neck, up to his mouth and nose and he became apprehensive he didn't want to give up his Gayatri what would happen if the water would go into his nose suddenly the water went down and now this again the water came up almost up to his nose and again it went down again it came up now in tides the water goes up and down but not so fast he was wondering why is Ganga Devi causing her water to go up and down so quickly and then he looked around and he saw Lord Chaitanya was walking on the coast of Ganga on the banks of Ganga and Ganga Devi wanted to constantly touch the Lord's feet so on the banks where the land was sloping one leg of Lord Chaitanya was slightly at a lower level and other leg was at a higher level so Ganga Devi wanted to touch the Lord's feet without inconveniencing him by wetting his feet too much so when his feet which was at a lower level in the ground which was in the ground at a lower level and it was moving at that level so to touch that feet Ganga would go down take her level down a little bit and then when that foot was in the air Ganga Devi still wanted to contact Lord's feet and so she would touch the other she would rise slightly higher so that she could touch the other feet of the Lord which was at a slightly higher level in this way Ganga Devi was constantly trying to get the blessings of the Lord's lotus feet so that's why in order to just touch the Lord's feet without inconveniencing him her water was going up and down rapidly this is how Ganga Devi demonstrated how dear the Lord was to her janavi jivana and then so among the many celebrated pastimes that Lord Chaitanya performed in Navadvip the most celebrated is his pastime of delivering Jagai and Madai who were actually Brahmanas who had fallen by bad association and become sinful when they became sinful ones they had no they committed all kinds of imaginable and unimaginable sins and the people used to run away from them if people saw them then they would go and not want there even shadows to touch them because they are so sinful people would go and take bath in the Ganga toward contamination by them but then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy delivered even such people there are different kinds of power now one kind of power is in say stopping interfering with natural phenomena say in the old testament it is said that God parted the river so that the Jews could escape from that way escape from the Egyptian pursuers so one is interrupting the normal activities of nature is an exhibition of strength but far greater exhibition of strength something that is much more difficult if not impossible to do is not just interrupting but reversing the flow of one's desires that where a person's habitual desires are going towards going down towards worldly sinful things just as redirecting a whole river in the opposite direction is nearly impossible but if someone can do that that is indeed a miracle now redirecting a river is difficult but redirecting the flow of desires is far more difficult because this flow has been going on lifetime after lifetime and it is almost impossible to check or reverse it but if somebody can do that that is indeed the greatest miracle and that was the miracle that Lord Chaitanya did when he transformed the Durvrttis like Jagai and Madai so Jagai and Madai were just two but Adi there were others also whom Lord Chaitanya transformed though others might not have been as sinful as Jagai and Madai but still they were also transformed by his mercy so this is the glorious power of the Lord and that power to completely reverse the flow of desire is manifested by the Lord through his holy names so when we chant the holy names we actually have access to that power and we may try by our will power to check the flow of our desires towards sinful things but if we just beg to the Lord and take shelter of his mercy manifesting through the process of Bhakti Yoga through the process of Harinaam then he will reverse the flow of desires for us and he will grant us life's supreme perfection of the ceaseless of the ceaseless flow of our heart's love for Krishna.
