Gita 01.03 Context can convert compliment into criticism
1.3 So here Duryodhana has approached his teacher Dhritharashtra and he is speaking to him please see see the power of the Pandavas that just understand you see the magnificent way, the mighty way in which the opposing armies arrange and this has been attained arranged by the son of Drupada this is the expertise of your disciple now normally if we tell someone just see how expertly your disciple has arranged something that would be a compliment but the context can convert a compliment into a criticism in this case by no means does Duryodhana speak this as a compliment to Krishna compliment to Drona rather although he is saying that that this is the expertise of your disciple but there are two ways in which this is not a praise but it is a criticism it is actually sarcasm loaded criticism how is that? because that is the opposing army just see that it is your student fighting against you so what is the use of your teaching someone who if that person is going to fight against you if you know that then why did you even train him and on top of that he is talking about Drupada now that this person who has arranged the opposite army in which impressive formation that is the son of Drupada Dhrishtadyumna Dhrishtadyumna has his own name but Duryodhana does not use the name Dhrishtadyumna here because his intent is not to glorify his own achievements his intent is actually not to just give a objective description his intent is to give a provocative description so our angle of presentation of things can can show that whether a presentation is objective or provocative so eleven people were killed in the riots that is the report that could be that could be objective report but if somebody says that eleven people were killed in riots by immigrants who have been hosted whom we have foolishly hosted by immigrants that we have ourselves invited and hosted then now there might be thousands of immigrants who might be contributing constructive to society and say immigrants may not be one homogenous immigrants are usually not one homogenous group of people with one kind of mindset they are of various mentalities and why single out the fact that it is immigrants who have done this unless one wants to give an angle to it the idea is one wants to provoke people to act against the immigrants then a paper might give this kind of report so the angle that we give to a particular situation that can evoke a particular emotion in people so when he says tabashishena this is your disciple that itself is indicating that that actually just see because of your excessive broad mindedness your excessive liberality it is now your student who is fighting against you your student is has now made your work excessively difficult so you have ended up empowering the one who is fighting against you normally if you are fighting against someone the effort would be to disempower the enemy not to empower the enemy but here by your training by your expert teaching you have empowered the enemy and thus you have made our job more difficult than it needs to be and on top of that now even when there is the same point applies to Drupada Putrena you have a long history of enmity towards towards Drupada Drupada had insulted you and then you won't go to the story here Drupada had insulted Drona and Drona had counter insulted Drupada and then Drupada had taken a vow to take revenge against Drona and for that purpose he had performed austerities engaging Brahmanas and had got a son who now was going to be was going to be the fighting against him and that son was born primarily for his death so he had ended up by liberality empowering his enemies instead of disempowering them so similarly we too we have our inner enemies in terms of our lower desires it may be lust it may be greed and envy and then if we if we if we contemplate on the sense objects that incite lust within us that aggravate lust within us then we are empowering our enemies by giving them giving those inimical desires a further fillip we are meant to disempower them by starving them of the perception of the objects that would empower of the sights of the perceptions that would empower them gradually they will weaken and die then so that of course refers to the inner war in which also this principle applies that we should be disempowering our inner enemies not empowering them so we so we disempower our inner enemies by distancing ourselves from tempting sense objects and we empower our inner enemies by contemplating on the sense objects returning to the context of the outer war that is being fought over here the point is that here Duryodhana wants to make sure that Drupada does not become that Dronacharya doesn't become lax in fighting against the Pandavas Drona and Bhishma where his foremost warriors they were senior most and the foremost apart from Karna but he felt that they were also affectionate knew that they were affectionate towards the Pandavas and thus he was not sure whether they would fight wholeheartedly with him so now he had been looking for some way by which he could goad them to fight wholeheartedly so he couldn't do that to Bhishma but he found here a ready way by which he could goad Drona and that's what he is doing over here he is actually making sure that Drona feels angered and by that anger he fights furiously against the Pandavas thus here there is another expertise we could say evil expertise in inciting those on his side to fight wholeheartedly.
