Gita 01.07 Be aware of how what we say to one person may be heard by others
Thank you asmakam tu vishishtaye and now in this way let me describe from our side asmakam tu vishishtaye special among our forces tan nivodha, just for your information dvijottama, oh best among the brahmanas nayakam mam sainisya the commanders of my army sanyartham tantrabhimite I'll speak about them so here as Duryodhana speaks about the opposite forces to Drona to incite him he also recognizes that his words are spoken in public and others are also hearing them and when we speak certain when somebody speaks some words to us especially when we know that the other person is diplomatic or political then we also look for not just what is said but what is the meaning of what is said and what is the meaning means not just what is the literal meaning but what is implied by what is being said so he realizes that he has spoken about the opposite forces and that might indicate that he thinks that the opposite party is too powerful he is of course somewhat shaken by the strength of the military phalanx that the Pandavas have formed and that's why dvijottama pandava nikam yudham duryodhinastada acharya bhasangam raja vachinimapraved that was the second verse of the nita that as soon as Dhritharajana saw the military formation of the Kauravas of the Pandavas he personally went to Drona to have a word with him so undoubtedly the military formation did concern him if we compare the war to a sports match then when we when one team sees the opposite team at that time they think what exactly is the strategy of the opposite team what exactly are they going to do and if say the batting team sees that the opposing team has formed the fielding patterns in a particular way that indicates the strategy so then if the fielding is very attacking then the batsman may decide that oh we have to plan accordingly if you want to talk so like that Drona is Drona talks on seeing the military formation of the Kauravas at the same time he doesn't want his own soldiers to become disheartened thinking that he is alarmed on seeing the opposite party so he starts he says that now I will speak about the heroes on my side Asmar Kamdavishishthai and there are so many heroes over here and I will speak only of a few of them and those I will speak of Tandivodh and you take note of it's interesting that obviously all the players all the warriors at least the main ones the name ones whom Drona is naming over here they are well known to each other it's not that it's like if there's a cricket team in which say there are 14 players or 16 players in the team and then the 11 that are going to play they are not known till the team actually comes in the field and sometimes there might be some surprise selections and then the coach or the captain may have to tell the team that these players have these strengths or weaknesses you know not like that here in the Kurukshetra war the main army the main warriors from both sides were known already both the Pandavas and the Kauravas had endeavored to form various alliances trying to get the various kings to fight from their side and both of them knew who was on which side when both of knew that who were there on their side and who all were there on the opposite side what is the point for Drona to make a listing like this it is not that Drona did not know in fact for many of the warriors most of the warriors were assembled there Drona knew them very well because Drona was their teacher of course there were some warriors from older generation and some from a very younger generation but overall Drona's academy Drona's gurukul at the Kuru's place and become so famous the kings had sent from far and wide their princesses trained under him so when he says please take note know about this so again at one level it might seem that what Drona is informing is redundant it doesn't have to mention that he is known to Drona but Drona is the person to whom Drona is speaking however Drona is not the only person to whom he is speaking others are also hearing and he wants to allay their concerns also generally whenever we speak even to one person it is not that that person alone is hearing they said that even the walls have ears and the walls will hear and the walls will transmit that sound to others there is a circumspect in what we speak not just in terms of the specific object of whom we are saying it to but we need to consider that if others hear these words what will be the consequence of them of hearing these words and therefore to have some kind of balancing act so if you have spoken very critically about one person or you have spoken favorably for one side then in order to not appear biased we need to give a balanced perspective and speak something from the other side also he is now going to try to balance with the balancing act first he has instinctively, impulsively, involuntarily on seeing the Pandava army he has spoken three verses expressing his concern and at the same time using his concern to incite Drona by getting Drona's vision directed towards Drupada and those related to Drupada on the opposite side but now he wants to reassure his soldiers and make sure that their morale is strong in a war, victory or defeat is determined not just by who is stronger but also by who is more perseverant more determined, who goes the extra mile and if somebody is discouraged then what to speak of going the extra mile they may just quit after a very short time also so he doesn't want his soldiers to become disheartened thus when he is speaking this, he is speaking not just to Drona it's 1.7 verse he has spoken also to the other warriors on his side it's not that I don't have confidence in you, I do have confidence in you he gives a list of those warriors accordingly that list will come in the future verses.
