Gita 02.02 Identify behavior that is out of character with our character
Bhagavad Gita 2.3 so here Krishna is exhorting Arjuna to fight by reminding him forcefully that weakness does not behoove him from where has this this impurity arrived at a time of crisis this does not behoove you Arjuna who is an Arya that you are an Arya that you are a person who knows about life spiritual values of life spiritual value ultimately that means life is meant to be lived according to spiritual values our human life ultimately has spiritual value it is opportunity for us to realize our own eternal spirituality so life spiritual values help us realize life's spiritual value so spiritual value is such as giving adequate time for our sadhana our swadhyay our study of scripture our meditational practices our satsanga association spiritually minded people all this and they give due value to it these are life spiritual values and they help us to realize life's spiritual value they help us to realize our eternality and to experience life unending life eternal so naarijushtam asvargyam oh Arjuna this will not enable you this kind of action does not befit you and it will not lead to a any auspicious destination asvargyam it will lead you not to swarga to an elevated destination but akirtikaram even in this life it will lead you to infamy that infamy is you will be seen as a coward now klaibyam maasmagamaha sorry kutasthva kashmallamidam from where has this weakness come upon you Arjuna what this essentially means is that for each one of us there is a there are certain characteristics that define us to others if a person is very calm and gentle usually and suddenly that person starts speaking very harshly very loudly and speaks very cruel words and you say why are you speaking like this this kind of speech does not befit you it does not behoove you so klaibyam maasmagamaha partha so Krishna has said don't give in to this weakness and now that is what he has said in the previous verse and in this verse he says where has this come from this is not present in your character this kind of behavior is out of sync with your character I didn't even know that you can think like this you have this kind of thoughts ideas desires somebody is a very peace loving person and suddenly that person starts talking about violently attacking someone else hey what is going on I don't we don't think we don't think that I never thought you thought like this where has this thought come from within you so when we remind people like this this is completely out of sync with who you are even in the best among us certain desires may just pop up because certain thoughts certain feelings certain desires they may just pop up from somewhere and if they pop up then even if they have come within us if you understand this is not who I am and this is not who I want to be I have become someone that I never wanted to become I have become someone who is unworthy of who I want to be and then we can reject that particular desire that particular impurity often life distracts us or diverts us not by making us by life by life we mean the various negative forces that influences externally through various tempting situations and the mind internally which influences us through various distractions so life diverts us not by bringing us to a sharp evident turn but by taking us on a road that involves a continuous gentle turn that effectively becomes a u-turn if we suddenly take a right turn or a u-turn when we want to go straight then we will understand that oh I am the wrong path but if the road ahead itself we are going straight or at least we are following the road ahead of us and the road itself is gently turning turning then we may not even realize that we are in the opposite direction of our intended direction so similarly for us our mind makes us gently take a turning road mind subtly prods us into taking that gently turning road and eventually we end up having taken a u-turn but if somebody points out to us hey this is not what you were meant to do we realize yes this is not what I was going to do this is not what I was going to do then we can check ourselves we can stop ourselves from doing what we would normally not do so for Arjuna who is a heroic warrior who has fought and won in enormously difficult wars by skill and speed and by his courage for that warrior to feel weakness right before the biggest fight of his life that is extremely uncharacteristic it is utterly unbecoming and thus Krishna is asking Arjuna kutas tva kashmala midam where has such a desire come in you from such a desire does not befit you at all Arjuna give up that desire and come forward to act courageously act in harmony with and to honor who you really are now of course who Arjuna really is will be revealed later in the Bhagavad Gita that you are a soul a part of Krishna a part of the divine but at this stage Krishna focuses on at his very level of reality at his very level of identifying himself as a warrior for a warrior to be cowardly is unbecoming for a warrior to develop cold feet is unbecoming so where is this weakness where is this indecisiveness where is this fearfulness and tearfulness Arjuna is filled with fear not of his own death but fear of the sinful reactions that might come upon him if he does wrong and he kills his relatives but his tearfulness as was mentioned in 2.1 that his eyes were filled with tears not knowing what to do so thus Arjuna is being exalted by Krishna that to not be given to this degrading importance do not where is this that was told in the previous verse and this verse reiterates that theme by saying Arjuna this doesn't become you do not act in weakness like this thank you.
