Gita 03.32 – Turning away from Krishna defeats the purpose of knowledge
Thank you Bhagavad Gita 3.32 Bhagavad Gita 3.32 Krishna is instructing by contrasting in the previous verse he told the reward that awaits those who put faith and in this verse he tells the destination the fate of those who don't put faith so those people in this message those who are envious they do not live according to these words so Krishna is not saying they don't have any knowledge they have knowledge but their knowledge gets denuded all their knowledge gets denuded know that is destroyed so is they are not conscious or their consciousness is misdirected so now when we look towards the sun then we see the bright bright sun and we also see light all around us when we turn away from the sun then we see dark when we see the shadow and if you also go further and further away sun's light is almost there everywhere but if we go further and further away from light source then we go into darkness more and more so means just as some people can turn their face away from the light similarly some people turn their face away from Krishna and we turn our face away from him by refusing to put faith in him when we act in a way as if Krishna doesn't exist or Krishna doesn't matter how can we say that how do we act as if Krishna doesn't matter when we don't care for his words then we don't live according to his words and we may not be consciously envious of Krishna but when we defy his words that itself is a sign that we have some envy towards Krishna we are envying his position as the authority for our life and we are usurping that position by placing ourselves in that position Krishna you are not the authority I am the authority and when we do like this usurping Krishna's position not consciously but subconsciously making ourselves the final authority for our life then certainly it's our life and we have to make decisions Krishna does give us authority even at the end of the Gita when he says love means that we voluntarily subordinate our authority to Krishna's authority that is the nature of love we say we fall in love it is not that we climb in love when we are in love with someone we don't go on top of that person rather we submit ourselves to that person they say in love your wish is my command so like that we say to Krishna but those who don't have faith, those who have envy then and Krishna says the result of that is is foolish is especially foolish means that knowledge gets deluded so there is knowledge and there is the purpose of knowledge when the purpose of knowledge is lost then the knowledge becomes useless or the knowledge can also become dangerous a doctor may have knowledge of surgery and that knowledge is valuable but that doctor is extremely greedy insensitive even sadistic then the doctor instead of using the knowledge of how to cut the body to cut out the infection and heal the patient, the doctor may actually end up stealing organs from the patient so that knowledge is there but instead of showing compassion and helping the patient excessive greed which makes the doctor see the patient just like a money minting machine, money source and then that knowledge becomes defeated so similarly the purpose of life is to learn to love Krishna when we forget that purpose and when we try to act independently of Krishna, seeking pleasure without connection with him seeking pleasure through matter because that matter has caught our fascination then the purpose of whatever knowledge we have that is to ourselves go closer to Krishna gyanavan mam prapadyate Krishna will say in 7.19 those who truly have gyan they surrender to him because they understand that is the surrender to Krishna is the purpose and perfection of all knowledge but those who don't understand this rather because they are achetasah, they are turned away from Krishna so all the knowledge in terms of the purpose of the knowledge becomes frustrated with the nishtan with the arjanot nishtan now in this world there are many different people with many different specializations and they have various kinds of knowledge based on that specialization and that knowledge is useful there are people who have developed technology, they have built bridges, they have built planes, there are so many things written books, composed poetry the purpose of knowledge is ultimately to know the one who can take us beyond the cycle of birth and death one who can grant eternal life the Upanishad says that by knowing him we can go beyond death if one doesn't know this path doesn't know him there is no other way to go beyond death so Krishna will also talk about this principle in 4.9 but the purpose of attaining lasting fulfillment, the purpose of gaining spiritual happiness the purpose of becoming liberated is lost for those who are urges no matter how much they know materially and no matter how much they achieve materially their gyan is removed because the purpose of it all is lost just like if somebody is on a jail and from that jail a person can have all kinds of knowledge about the jail what is the thickness of the wall what is the kind of tiles used for the floor what is the color specifically of the ceiling all this knowledge is ok but if one doesn't focus on getting out of the jail then all the knowledge is ultimately useless so similarly if we don't come to know Krishna we can't get out of material existence and if we can't get out of material existence then the special opportunity that human life has provided us the purpose for which all our knowledge is supposed to be directed that knowledge, that purpose is defeated that opportunity is lost and in that sense it is Sarva Gyan so Krishna is the goal of knowledge when we turn away from Krishna all our knowledge becomes baffled, frustrated rendered useless in the ultimate perspective.
