Gita 06.04 – Rigorous renunciation characterizes the yogarudha stage
Action will be the means of progress thank you Bhagavad Gita chapter 6 verse 4 here Krishna is telling that who is situated on the Aarudh stage yoga arudhas tadocchate who is situated in a state of being accomplished in yoga so in the previous verse Krishna talked about two stages the initial stage of yoga called Aarudh and the advanced stage called as Aarudh now the Aarudh stage somebody may claim that oh I am already on the Aarudh stage and Krishna has said for such people shamaha karanam uchchate it is inaction, outer inaction coupled with inner contemplation that is the means inner peaceful contemplation so somebody may say oh I am already at that level and therefore I can practice shamaha I don't have to do karma but Krishna is cautioning against such assumption by telling the qualification required over here so he says yadahina indriya artheshu yadahina indriya artheshu indriya artha is the sense objects so one who does not crave for the sense objects na karmasvanushachyate so forgetting the sense objects one does not engage in karma that is fruitive work sarvasankalpa sanyasi sarvasankalpa sanyasi one who is who has renounced all sankalpa all desire to enjoy which a person is yoga arudha now again we will see that we have to look at the contextual meaning of words to make sense over here Krishna has said in the previous verse for the for the Aarudh uksha karma is the means for progressing but now in this verse he says that one who does not engage in karma na karmasvanushachyate that person can go beyond the Aarudh uksha stage and come to the Arudha stage so here when Krishna is using the word karma it is not in the same sense as it is used in the previous verse in the previous 6.3 karma simply meant action and if you look at the context it means detached action it means karma as a part of karma yoga whereas here karma refers to karma as in kamyakarma karma which is done for get fulfilling desire yadahi nendriyaartheshu na karmasvanushachyate so one who doesn't work for getting indriyaartheshu forgetting the sense objects that means one who is who is who is fully situated in detached work and not only situate one who does not only that person not engaging attach work but also there is internal renunciation sarvasankalpa sanyasi sanyasi so sanyasi normally refers to renunciate to somebody who is in the renounced order but here Krishna is using a that word as a part of a compound word sarvasankalpa sanyasi so the person doesn't have to be in the renounced order but that person renounces all sankalpa all desires for worldly enjoyment and the person who has done this that person is situated on yoga arudha now is this was talking about perfection on the path of yoga because we may wonder if somebody is having no attachment to the sense objects nendriyaartheshu somebody not engaging in fruitive activities na karmasvanushachyate somebody is renounced all desires sarvasankalpa sanyasi then what more is to be attained now actually there is detachment from the negative and there is attachment to the positive so there are attachment from the material and there is attachment to the spiritual so when there is when one is free from at least from the gross attachment to material things at a gross level then one can turn inwards so sarvasankalpa sanyasi more specifically means not just one is free from desires but sankalpa is more specifically although sankalpa can be translated desires but sankalpa specifically means the intention to fulfill desires krishna has earlier used the word kama sankalpa varjitaha so kama sankalpa varjitaha means sankalpa there is sankalpa and vikalpa there is a decision and then there is the detraction of the decision we decide something and then we feel no no this is not what i should do so retraction of the decision so the mind has goes through these phases of wanting to enjoy sense gratification wanting to give up sense gratification but here krishna is talking about sarvasankalpa sanyasi one who has renounced work h a person is yoga is situated at the advanced stage of yoga so here he is talking about now that the person has at least got the intelligence by which to know that sensual desires lead to bondage and therefore i shouldn't engage in them i shouldn't entangle myself in them and once we understand this then we can move forward and try to get rid of the desires internally also so now this verse marks a transition where from here onwards in the next three to four verses krishna will focus on the mind and krishna will talk about the inner purification that is required for one to advance in the path of yoga towards the stage where one can accept shamaha and then progress further generally the yogis those who are practicing ashram yoga there are eight stages in the process of yoga yam yam asana pranayam these can be done when a person is engaging in the world also but as one advances in the as one comes towards the higher stages where one shuts out the sense objects and then then as we move forward in these stages one needs to be disconnected from the world for that one has to renounce the world and go to the forest as krishna will talk about in the later part of the chapter from starting at 10th verse onwards and 11th verse he talks about this so basically here krishna is talking about the precursor so arjuna may get the question that krishna you have said that sanyas and yoga are the same thing so then is it that one never needs to take sanyas physically never needs to renounce the world krishna is saying that actually one needs to come to the arudha stage and the arudha stage is the stage when one is no longer attached to the enjoyment of sense gratification if one still has strong desires for engaging in sense gratification then one has desires for engaging sense gratification and one has the inclination to fulfill those desires then certainly that leads to complication and entanglement and actually for a renunciate to engage in sense gratification is quite karmically karmically entangling it's atrocious one was renounced the world should not engage so krishna is here by talking about renunciation by placing renunciation on such a high pedestal is ensuring that people don't misuse the renounced order as an escape way from the complexities of worldly duties and he's going to tell arjuna you should also work but there is a sadhana in which one can renounce the world and move forward in life but what is that sadhana involving that we will be talking that he talks here in this chapter later on but at this stage krishna is telling that the arudha stage is not something which we can just assume simplistically oh i am at the arudha stage no we have to work and you have to come to this level of being free from the intention to enjoy to from the intent from the intention to enjoy sense gratification from working for striving for sense gratification and for engaging in sense gratification thank you.
