Gita 10.40 – Krishna’s infinitude brings not confusion, but jubilation
Thank you Krishna now comes to the conclusion which he is giving after listing his various opulences while giving this conclusion he states that his opulences are transcendental there is no end to them Arjuna who is the chastiser of enemies has no end only as an example I have spoken this expansive are my glories by which I pervade this world there was another verse right at the start of this list when Krishna also said the same thing a similar point that was 10.90 that is the verse with which Krishna began this list so so there is no end so Krishna using the same word na and anta slightly different forms that's all and the that also comes again by which he is expanded so his opulence is expanded Krishna is pleased with Arjuna's question so yes indeed I will speak to you yes transcendental are my opulences but what will I speak I will speak only the principal ones because they are endless so although Arjuna has asked Arjuna has asked Krishna Krishna please speak your opulences in detail Krishna says I will speak in principle because once we go into detail the details are endless the opulences are endless so Krishna gives that caveat at the beginning and then here at the end also he repeats that point when he says that actually so as an example for the purpose of illustration I am speaking these things so the list of opulences given here is indicative it is not exhaustive that actually the Bhagavatam contains verses such as that even if someone is able to count all the atoms in creation and be able to count all the stars in the sky even then such a person will not be able to count the glories of Krishna so expansive they cannot be able to count the qualities of Krishna the glories of Krishna such as the infinite opulence of Krishna and even in this world when Krishna's opulence manifests Krishna gives a list where he does not go into exhaustive exhaustive explanations exhaustive listing of things but indicatively he demonstrates that the principle will be mentioned further in the next verse what is the this list is indicative it is not exhaustive it is not exhaustive to all the items in it but it indicates what it indicates what is the principle it will be explicitly mentioned towards the end now one important point for all of us to know is that God is infinite and the very idea of infinity means that it is not comprehensible by our finite intelligence and that's why we need to learn to go beyond our finite intelligence in seeking to understand the infinite at one level the finite can never understand the infinite but at another level that does not mean that we have to stay in a state of incomprehension or confusion it means that when we understand understand the infinitude of Krishna then that causes not incomprehension and confusion but it causes appreciation and jubilation suppose when we are studying the subject and the subject is very complicated and because it is complicated so we just don't understand anything and say the teacher speaks something and then we don't get anything and after that if we find other students are getting it and then we are not getting it we get all the more discouraged so that is not because the subject is so difficult that we can't comprehend it at all and then we accept defeat that is not the kind of feeling that is expected or is desirable when we approach God and acknowledge that his infinitude makes him incomprehensible for us so there there is a feeling of helplessness there is a feeling of frustration when we find that we are just not able to understand the subject everything is going over our head so the word going over the head often is connotated with the idea of a bouncer in cricket and the ball just bounces over the head the batsman can't even get back to the ball and the ball just goes over the bouncers are quite intimidating and similarly things that go over the head are intimidating now Krishna's glories are meant to not intimidate us they are meant to help us become intimate with him so how does that happen whatever we can understand about Krishna that when we understand we feel delighted in that understanding we feel that every aspect of Krishna that we understand and whatever portion of it we understand that it just deepens our deepens our affection for Krishna it makes us feel that he is so lovable so eminently lovable that we would just like to go on staying devoted to him and becoming not just stay on devoted but becoming increasingly devoted to him and that feeling is the feeling of endless ecstasy there is something which is so difficult that we can't understand it and that's why we feel filled with dread at that time but that is with respect to a very incomprehensible subject that goes over our head but when it comes to Krishna's glories they don't go over our head they go deep into our heart and they fill our heart and they flood our heart and our flood flows in the ocean of devotion in the ocean of in the oceanic glories of Krishna relishing them at every moment as Sanjay says at the end of the Gita I delight at every moment and again and again in 18.76 and 77 he states this so the point is that we all Newton when we approach Krishna in a mood of devotion then the greater the person is the greater becomes our appreciation for that person greater becomes our jubilation when we understand how great that person is and thus when we understand that Krishna's glories are endless and here Krishna gives the list of the glories some of the glories as an indication of his endless opulence we don't feel disappointed or we don't feel confused or negatively overwhelmed but we feel delighted and enlivened that we will never exhaust our appreciation of Krishna's glories but still in pursuing Krishna's still pursuing an understanding of Krishna's glories and in understanding them to whatever level we can and appreciating and relishing them we can have a life of endless ecstasy such is the joy bestowing unlimitedness.
