Bhagavad Gita 18.41 Brahmana Kshatriya Visham Shudranaam Chaparantapa Karmaani Pravibhaktani Svabhava Prabhavairgunai Here Krishna gives a prelude to his description of qualities and occupations in terms of the three modes. In the Vedas, he has stated that nobody in the world, entire world, or in fact in an entire universe, is free from the three modes. Even among the gods, no one is free from the modes.
What to speak of the humans? So then, what is to be done? If everybody is affected by the modes, everybody is bound by the modes, then there has to be a proper arrangement for helping people to act in their present situation that we are in. The broad wisdom of the Vedic literature is that they offer as user-friendly spirituality. User-friendly means that if we consider a user is the potential aspirant of the spiritual path, and that practically means everyone.
Whether we know it or not, our heart is longing for Krishna, who is the culmination of spiritual reality, who is the acme of spiritual truth. We are all longing for him, and we are looking for him through his various manifestations, thinking that something beautiful, something powerful, something famous, something which will give us a lot of financial wealth, that will make us happy. But somehow, none of these things are providing us the promised happiness.
And thus we are staying misdirected from Krishna. So, we need to be redirected towards Krishna, but we can’t be redirected automatically, or instantaneously. We can, of course, if we associate with devotees, and we get injected with the desire to serve Krishna, with the desire to love Krishna, that desire can propel us on the spiritual path.
Still, we may not necessarily serve in the same way in which that particular devotee is serving. We may have to serve in some other way, because we have our particular nature, and we serve accordingly. that this is user friendly spirituality means, where the user is, from there a path is provided for spiritual elevation.
So, one, there can be two kinds of communications. There are some taxis, or some cars, or some forms of public transport, say buses, that are available at a particular pickup point. So, the users have to, the travelers have to get to those pickup points, and from there they can start off.
There the bus will pick them up. But, if there were more custom made transport system, then the cab, or the, whatever mechanism is, for transportation, it comes right to one’s home, and one picks it up, and then it picks it up from there. So, here it’s understood that different people are of different natures.
One way of understanding these different natures is through the system of Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. And, we have to work in a way that helps us become elevated. So, how to work from where we are? That, the, that sort of customized spirituality is provided for us by our, by the text.
So here, it will be told in the future verses, what qualities a Brahmana should cultivate, what a Kshatriya should cultivate, what a Vaishya should cultivate, and what a Shudra should cultivate. So, this is not monochrome spirituality. This is not, although the purpose is one, the process is customized for the many.
So, here it is, Brahmana Kshatriya Visham Shudranam Chaparantapa. The four Varanas are mentioned. Vaishyas are mentioned in short at Visham.
Karmāṇi Pravibhaktāṇi Their karmas are called Svabhāva-Prabhavair-Gunai. Svabhāva-Prabhavair. So, Bhāva, one’s own nature, Prabhavair, from which it emerges, in which it flourishes, Gunai, the qualities.
So, Svabhāva refers here to the Bhāva, the nature of one’s self. Not one’s self in terms of one’s soul, but one’s self in terms of one’s body-mind. Ultimately, the soul is not a Brahmana Kshatriya Vaishya Shudra.
Shaitanya Mahaprabhu talks about this transcendental level of reality when in the famous verse he says that, So, he identifies the four varnas and the four ashramas and he says, I do not belong to any of them He says, I am a part of the supreme I am a servant of servant of the servant of the lord of the gopis That is the eternal identity of the soul and that is the identity which we want to realize If we consider somebody has got amnesia and their amnesia was for a long time, so in the community where they were living they were given some other name and some other role. Now if they are being treated to be healed of their amnesia during the process they are being healed they actually speaking they will have to function according to whatever transitional identity they have at that time. That is not their eternal that is not their enduring identity but still they go to a treatment.
They will not be able to immediately identify with the name. They have forgotten There is a gradual process of awakening for them of their activation reactivation of their memory for them. So similarly while we are here in this world there is a process by which our memory can be activated and that process centers on moving step by step in our relationship with Krishna by serving from where we are.
So Arjuna is told to act according to his Kshatriya identity but don’t simply act only for a Kshatriya purpose. Act for a devotional purpose. So the particular duties that Arjuna will do will be according to his nature but the purpose for which he will do those duties will be according to his spiritual understanding of life.
So thus there is a harmonious integration or balance of both the material and the spiritual in the way Krishna helps us to become engaged on the spiritual path. So svabhava prabhavair if we understand our svabhava and accordingly we are engaged then we can move forward steadily without experiencing too much disharmony or disruption. So that provision is there and that is what the background Krishna is giving in this verse when he states that everybody will be engaged according to their svabhava.
How they can act for their material contribution and spiritual elevation that will be described in subsequent verses.
