Govind Damodar Stotra verse 54 Jivhe Sadaiva Bhaja Sundarani Namaani Krishnasya Manoharani Samastha Bhakta Divinashyanani Govinda Damodar Madhaveti Jivhe Sadaiva Bhaja Sundarani Oh my tongue please always worship the beautiful holy names of Krishna. Namaani Krishnasya Manoharani Please carry away the mind due to their beauty.
Manoharani After you carry away the mind there are so many things in the world which carry away the mind. There is entertainment which can carry away the mind. There is sports.
There are movies of various sorts. But Samastha Bhakta Aarti Vinashyanani Samastha Bhakta Aarti All the miseries of the devotee are destroyed. Govinda Damodar Madhaveti By the names of the Lord.
Actually all of us need some satisfying object of thought to become happy. Our happiness comes just not by eating good food or enjoying sense gratification. Because ultimately it is our thoughts that determine whether we are happy or not.
We may be eating delicious food but if we are irritated by something the food doesn’t taste good or at least we don’t enjoy the food. So the biggest problem in material existence is that no object of thought seems to be constantly sustainably satisfying. Thinking about sports that I like may give me some satisfaction but within that sports sometimes I will get the result that I like sometimes I won’t get that result.
Similarly when people watch movies or other passive pleasures like that after some time they just get boring and people feel I am wasting my time over here. So no object of thought provides sustainable satisfaction. The only such object of thought that will ever satisfy us continuously is Krishna and we connect with Krishna through his manifestation as the holy name.
So the Manohar capability of the holy name may not seem immediately apparent to us because when we try to chant the mind seems to go everywhere except the holy name and it seems that everything else has a capacity of attracting the mind but not the holy name. However it is just the restlessness of the mind that is a residue of its past incessant wandering because of which even when the holy name comes in front of Krishna as his holy name even when the mind comes in front of Krishna at that time one still gets caught in other thoughts but if we continue chanting with the conviction that actually the holy name is the only way that my mind can ever become stable peaceful and joyful this is the only and the ultimate satisfying object of thought. Then we can slowly become steady enough in our practice of chanting by which we can taste the sweetness of the holy name and the more we let the holy name enter into our consciousness through the mind the more we will experience the effect that is promised over here.
So the mind may want to think of many other things but we can use our intelligence to convince the mind whatever else you think of a mind it will only give a little satisfaction but if you can think about Krishna constantly or at least regularly then to the extent you will be able to Krishna to the extent you will experience satisfaction. So at other times it may be difficult but at least at the time of chanting let me make Krishna as the primary if not the only object of thought and experience the peace, the power, the joy that comes thereof. Thank you.
