How can I grow spiritually when I am attracted to Krishna but I also have a spiritual and other interests and sometimes feel somewhat uncomfortable with the narrowness that comes with affiliating with one institution especially at some places Answer each of us is on a spiritual journey towards higher consciousness so that we can find higher meaning and purpose in our lives and ultimately arrive at greater fulfillment and a more enduring attainment through this life journey it is for us to find out the resources that can help us move forward in this journey and then adapt those resources. There are certain criteria which are objective or rather there are certain parameters which are fairly objective while tracing the map of spiritual growth in the in the trajectory of the spiritual journey so the 9 stages so with some Shraddha which is basically faith but more context simply positive curiosity a favorable curiosity one starts exploring and then one comes to the association of spiritually minded people and while hanging out with those people one starts realizing that spirituality is not just a matter of sentiment it also requires some commitment certain practices have to be taken up it’s not just about feeling good it’s also about becoming good by challenging our conceptions and our actions and even our aspirations at times our desires and all this happens through a process so adopting the practices of this process as per what is best suited for us in our situation can move forward so the sound is extremely powerful in charting our spiritual progress or in propelling, powering our spiritual progress whether that sound is a personal recitation of the holy name or it is hearing of spiritual wisdom from others or reading wisdom books or it is musical meditation or is it recitation of verses in the bhakti tradition the sound is extremely powerful and we need to make a plan of how we expose ourselves to this spiritual sound in regular and regulated manners this will involve basically doing some sadhana doing some swadhyay doing some satsang all these are important in their own place for exposing ourselves to sound not just exposing ourselves to sound as it is placing ourselves in the ambit of sound placing ourselves in the domain where sound is present and thereby continuing our spiritual journey so another important aspect is service seva based on our interests our talents our needs concerns we all can strive to do some services and those can enable us to move forward in our spiritual journey in systematic and sustained way because if you consider spiritual journey is essentially a development of our relationship with the ultimate reality and if relationship grows not just by spending time with the other person but also connecting with the other person by doing some things for them so taking responsibility in the relationship involves some extent remoulding our life for connecting deeper with that person and making some tangible commitments or responsibilities in that direction so now there are wide variety of services available for us one of them could simply be financial where we offer some regular contribution for a spiritual mission apart from that there could be many other things based on our interests, based on what we are inspired by, who we are inspired by what they are doing and how we can assist them in what they are doing all these can help us move ahead on the growth trajectory so there are certain landmarks that are given the traditions for example if somebody shows a particular level of commitment then they may qualify for initiation they so seek these landmarks are meant to aid us and spur us in our spiritual journey and we can also create our own landmarks say I completed reading this particular book or I did this particular practice for this much time or xyz whatever it may be that kind of that kind of keeping both social parameters as well as individual parameters give us a sense of direction and movement and achievement excitement also now the feeling that maybe does institutional connection or commitment narrow our vision it depends rather than focusing on the institution we focus on the process that the institution is offering like if we are going on a mountain trek we might go, we are trying to climb up a big mountain, we might go with a particular group and that group may have particular rules those rules are meant to help everyone move forward safely and smoothly towards the peak of the mountain so does those rules create some narrowing of our vision yes if we want to actually climb up the mountain there is we have to choose one path and stick to that one path I wouldn’t use the word narrowing I would use the word focusing over here now does that mean that we can’t draw insights from other traditions or other paths, no the point is not just to gain insight the point is also to rise, to progress to be transformed it’s fine if we say if we are going up by one path in the mountain and someone else is going by some other path we can always share notes with them and know their experiences or know about the sites that they are seeing while they are climbing up from their path upwards but it’s not that every time somebody else on some other path has a nice experience that means we should give up our path and go to that path it’s not that we have to keep changing our groups that we are a part of while we are going up the mountain it’s important that we keep moving up the mountain so relatively speaking in terms of drawing insights they can be done from various sources but following practices so that we can grow with this following practices for spiritual growth it may be in a particular focus we have to follow one path to get to the top of the mountain to try to follow too many paths may make us keep going round and round the mountain without really going up rather than thinking that my vision is being narrowed we can say that my vision is being focused as long as we keep our intelligence with us and we are observing whether our activities are fulfilling the purposes that we are seeking then we will be able to move on in our life substantially
