Summary
The debate surrounding the editing of Srila Prabhupada’s books often stems from misunderstandings about the editorial process and manuscript evolution. Here is a clear breakdown of the issue and how devotees can approach it.
Understanding the Editorial History
-
The Root of the Debate: Some devotees argue that edited books (V2) diverge from Srila Prabhupada’s original published works (V1), leading to a preference for unedited versions.
-
The Role of Audio and Transcripts: A fair comparison requires looking beyond V1 and V2 to original audio recordings (A0) and transcripts (T0/T1) to see how editing corrected early transcription errors.
-
Grammar vs. Meaning: While early editors adjusted text for clarity, grammar, and force—as Prabhupada originally authorized—some nuances were debated among devotees.
-
Minimal Consequential Impact: Research shows that roughly 99% of the edits are standard editorial improvements rather than significant alterations to Prabhupada’s core message.
-
Institutional Resolution: The BBT (Bhaktivedanta Book Trust) has frozen further editing, and a GBC-appointed body of scholar-devotees is responsibly reviewing and addressing concerns.
-
Focusing on the Core Message: Practical spiritual transformation comes from applying the teachings found across these editions, ensuring the controversy does not overshadow the books’ primary purpose.

There is some devotees feel that because Brahmapada’s books have been edited so we should study only the original unedited books and that edited books have been are not reflecting Brahmapada’s words answer this is unfortunate controversy that has escalated based on two factors one misrepresentation and other is overreach so now both could be unintentional entirely but let me explain what I mean first is that often devotees say that there is the those who are concerned about this they say that this is Prabhupada’s original words and this is what has been published and this was what was published in Prabhupada’s time and this is what is published now so let’s call this V1 and V2 and they say significant differences between the two of them and they say what are the need for making changes like this now actually before V1 there is what we can call as V0 here we are talking about virgins and V0 is the transcription of what should have Prabhupada originally dictated and then we can have T0 before that which is the audio we can call it A0 so V1 was prepared based on V0 that means devotees transcribed Prabhupada’s dictations and then those were edited and published but in the early days the devotees who transcribed were very unfamiliar with the Vedic tradition and Pitraloka for example they made Triloka that was there in V0 in the transcript and that’s what was published in V1 and now when V2 was published at that time basically the devotees brought V2 closer to A0 that means they reheard the transcriptions and then they tried to make the revised edition as close to the transcription as possible especially in terms of what had been done wrong in V1 so if you really want to know what is Prabhupada’s words comparing V2 and V1 alone are not enough we need to compare V1 and V2 with A0 now A0 as it was transcribed at that time was called as let’s call it V0 or T0 T transcription T0 so now we have a T1 a contemporary transcription and V2 is much closer to T1 than it was to T0 and it’s better because T1 and A0 are very clear overall so having said all this so when we are comparing how we compare is very very critical for for a fair understanding of the complex situation so we have V2 V1 and before that we can say we have T1 and then we have A0 then from A0 we have T2 and T2 is actually closer to V T2 is actually closer T2 and V2 are closer and T2 and V1 are different so if at all we want to compare the best way to compare is not V2 versus V1 but V2 and V1 versus A0 that is the comparison that should be done having said this so misunderstanding or misrepresentation is another part so that means when the devotees were editing at that time they edited not just for the purpose of fixing grammar and bringing clarity in the making the message itself clearer in some places where the message was not clear they tried to clarify it and in clarifying it some nuances were lost how important those nuances are that is something which is different devotees are of different opinions on that so what we need to do is we need to focus on those changes and see if they are very consequential now to whatever extent i have read them i have seen that 99% of them are not consequential and they are what any editor would do initially Prabhupada gave a job description to his editors he said edit for clarity and force something like that broadly now what does that mean normally an editor works with the author so the author says that the editor feels that this is not clear in the author i had to send it to the author and then the author says ok this is how it should be written or the editor proposes this is how it can be written but Prabhupada didn’t have that time for going through that kind of editorial process and after Prabhupada departed that opportunity was lost so the BBT definitely has taken a decision that there will be no further editing and for most practical purposes we devotees shouldn’t get too worried about this the unedited books and the unedited manuscript and the published books there is not a huge variation between them especially if we look at consequential changes and there is the devotee scholars have come together the GBC has appointed a body of responsible devotee scholars and they are interacting with the devotee editors and they are trying in one sense to get things fixed so it will be a controversy that will be resolved responsibly in due course and there is no need to escalate it too much if somebody is very concerned about it we may not be able to pacify it then because of what they have heard and from what they have understood based on what they have heard but for ourselves the core message we are still getting from Shilpa Prabhupada’s books from those who have studied Shilpa Prabhupada’s books that are teaching those books and that is what has transformed our lifestyle that will continue to transform us thank you Hare Krishna
