If death is as painful as thousands of scorpion bites, then how do some people die peacefully in sleep?
From: Suren
I heard in few lectures that the ulitmate problems of life are birth, old age , disease and death . It is said in scripture (Garuda Puraan) , that when a man dies he suffers an unbearable pain of 42,000 scorpion bites .
But we have seen many times that people die peacefully and there are no signs of such a trauma . For eg – few people pass away while asleep etc ..
I would be grateful to you if you could shower some clarification on this .

Question from Suren Prabhu. I heard in a few lectures that the ultimate problems of life are birth, old age, disease and death.
It is said in Garbh Purana that when a person dies, he suffers an unbearable pain of 40,000 scorpion bites. But we have seen many times that people die peacefully and there are no signs of such a trauma. For example, few people pass away while asleep etc.
I would be grateful if you could show us some clarification on this. Answer. We do not always see with our eyes what is the emotional reality that a person is undergoing.
Even when that person is alive, sometimes people may conceal their pain because of pride or shame or other factors. in other cases, they may not be able to, because different people live in different world views, so others may not sense that pain. For example, if India loses a World Cup final to Pakistan, the pain that Indians feel, an African will not be able to comprehend, especially a non-cricket playing African country.
So, one is that we can’t see because people may conceal or in other cases, we can’t see because our emotional worlds are different. Now beyond that, especially at the moment of death, so, what we need to understand is, what is it that causes pain? It is not just the event of death that causes pain, it is what death implies. Death implies the loss of all our attachments.
So, why a person suffers when an Indian suffers when India loses a cricket match is because there is attachment. So, some Indians may smash their TV, some Indians may not do anything, but to the extent they are attached, to that extent they will suffer. So, we understand at the time of death, everything that we are attached to, we lose.
So, now, whether that loss leads to some visible physical reactions in terms of pain or not, the loss will definitely be there to the extent we are attached and unless a person is spiritually attached, that person necessarily has to be materially attached because we are conscious beings who need to love. So, if we don’t love God, we will love material things. So, in some cases, some people, by their karma may be meant to have a peaceful death.
So, to a large extent, what happens to us is determined by destiny. How we respond to it is our free will. So, by our destiny, we may be destined to have a peaceful death.
So, just like some people by their destiny have a very loving and safe childhood and they have a good marriage, some others don’t have similar privileges in their life. That’s by past karma. Similarly, how death happens to us is to a large extent determined by our past karma.
But, what we undergo at the time of death, that is determined by our attachments. So, now the figure of specific number of scorpion bites is not to be taken as literally because first of all, nobody can quantify pain. So, how do we quantify? The figure is given to indicate the pain is immense, it’s excruciating, it’s almost unbearable.
So, the point is that because we are attached, when we lose whatever we are attached to, we will suffer. So, if we have 5000 rupees in our pocket and suddenly we find it has disappeared, somebody has stolen it, will we not feel pain? We will. So, similarly, if we have a loved one and suddenly we find that loved one has left us or has gone away or has died, whichever way, then will we not feel pain because of being buried? We will.
So, think of a situation when we lose all our possessions and all our relations in one brutal moment. The moment may not seem brutal at that particular moment to other people, but at an emotional level it is going to be devastating and that is essentially the pain of death, that we lose all our possessions and all our relations and that causes us suffering to the extent that we are attached and because everyone is materially attached, so everyone will suffer at the moment of death, whether it is seen by our eyes or not. Thank you.
