If Krishna takes away the things that can take us away from him, don’t go away from him. During our life, we often need many things for our survival and success. And there are some things that we think we need, but may not actually need.
When we start exploring the spiritual path, quite often we begin with exploring whether the divine, whoever it is, can help us get what we think what we need or what we think we need. Thus, the Bhagavad Gita says that four kinds of people approach Krishna. So, Chaturvidha, these four kinds of people are Artha, the distressed, Artharthi, those who are seeking wealth, Gyansu, the inquisitive, those who are seeking some information, some knowledge.
They are curious. And then, Gyani, those who have knowledge. Now, among these, most people fall in the first two categories.
They want some relief from distress or they want some wealth. Now, while we are trying to practice bhakti, also, we may need relief from distress and we may need wealth. And if these are somehow taken away from us, then we may start wondering what is the point of practicing bhakti.
If God doesn’t protect us by preserving what we need, then why should we practice bhakti? However, if we understand that the purpose of devotion is not the gifts of God, but God as the greatest gift, that means the best thing that can happen for us is that our devotion matures to such an extent that we become lovingly and joyfully absorbed in Krishna. And we realize that he is our greatest treasure because he alone will be with us eternally. And when we have love for him, we will attain his abode for a life of eternal joy.
And even in this life, if we are absorbed in Krishna, then we can weather even life’s toughest storms. Therefore, we need to very strongly focus on connecting with Krishna and trying to appreciate that he is our greatest treasure. For gaining such appreciation, sometimes Krishna may take away from us the things that distract us from him.
Now, we may consider such a loss as a disaster, but actually that loss breaks our infatuation, which is going to cause us a greater loss. The loss of Krishna, the loss of the opportunity to connect with Krishna. So rather than going away from Krishna, when certain things go away from us, we need to go toward Krishna, recognizing that this is an opportunity for us to realize that he is our greatest treasure.
And such is the spiritual realization of the realized souls as the Bhagavad Gita 7.19 states, that Bahunam janmanamante jnanavan mam prapadyate vasudevah sarvamiti samahatma sudurlabhaham. Samahatma sudurlabha. These are very rare souls who understand that vasudevah sarvamiti, that whatever shelter or pleasure I might get by any other thing in this world, I cannot get all that and more from Krishna.
When we get that realization, then our life becomes steady and spiritually successful. Thank you.
