Individuality is the part of creativity and spirituality. Individualism is the prison of self-obsession and self-destruction. We live in a culture that is individualistic and to some extent this culture gives people greater freedom and flexibility to mould their lives according to what will do better justice to their talents, interests and dreams.
In the past, people’s birth often determined the trajectory of their life to a large extent and thus some people were caught in incompatible vocations or relations. At the same time, individualistic behavior can cause social disintegration because people share responsibility and commitment. So to understand what is right and what is not right about an individualistic way of living, let’s differentiate between two terms individuality and individualism.
Individualism is self-centeredness narcissism where people care for nothing except themselves and individualism is a prison of self-obsession and self-destruction. So if we work at a job and we find that we don’t like it and we just quit then our minds are so fickle that even something that we like to do our mind won’t like it consistently and if we are too self-obsessed, usually the self that we obsess over is our surface self it is our mind with its fickle feelings and as those feelings change rapidly and repeatedly we can’t commit to anything in a sustainable way and thus we can’t achieve anything worthwhile in life the same applies to relationships even the best of relationships go through difficult phases and if people are too self-centered and don’t have concern for anything bigger than themselves then they can’t continue, they can’t sustain themselves that’s why it’s vital that individualism be avoided not only self-obsession can result from it but even self-destruction why? because when we start being concerned about only our pleasures, not only do we stop caring for others but we stop caring even for the future me and thus we may indulge in pleasures that may become compulsive and addictive and destroy us so individualism is a prison that keeps our consciousness locked in ourselves and prevents it from growing toward anything constructive individuality on the other part on the other hand can be a path to creativity and spirituality individuality means that we understand that each one of us is individual and we don’t have to necessarily live our lives to harmonize with some social mold or social expectation of how we should be we can look within to understand what God has gifted us with and then grow accordingly the Bhagavad Gita states it says that we all are parts of the Divine and the Divine has made each one of us as a unique part so our individuality is grounded in spiritual reality and it means to be honored at the same time presently our spiritual identity is covered over by our mind and senses which are filled with many superficial and self sabotaging desires and we identify ourselves with them when we become uncritically unregulatedly individualistic so individuality can be a path to creativity when we look within to understand our God given gifts, to understand our God given nature and strive to express it in a committed way even the things that we like to do there will be phases when we don’t like them and we need to persevere through those phases to be able to develop our potentials and to justice to our talents ultimately individuality goes to the path to spirituality it’s a path to keep us moving onward whereby as we connect our resources, our gifts and ourselves with the Divine in a mood of service and contribution we start becoming purified and as the pure me, the spiritual me starts manifesting for our own satisfaction and contribution as well as for manifesting in a way that contributes to others and satisfies them too so by gaining a spiritual self understanding and by cultivating in a disciplined way the path of spiritual realization we can avoid the prison of individualism and pursue the path of individuality thank you
