Question by Amit Kumar Subuti I like to hear bhajans and kirtans from devotees but I do not like to hear them from professionals so is it a sin that I do not like to recite the holy name of Krishna from them? Answer It is not a sin, it is a fortune that one has a distaste for Krishna and Krishna related songs and music when it comes from those whose hearts are not devoted to Krishna when we practice Krishna consciousness our goal is ultimately to be attracted to Krishna to develop love of bhakti and prema for Krishna and the Shrimad Bhagavatam describes that bhakti sanjayate bhakti that it is only bhakti in someone else’s heart when I come in contact with that person through his expression of bhakti that bhakti in my heart will awaken so that’s why when devotees glorify Krishna that enables us to also develop bhakti for Krishna on the other hand when non devotees glorify Krishna because their hearts are not attracted to Krishna they are doing that sort of singing just for musical pleasure and for monetary gain so at one level this sort of attraction to pious and devotional songs is better than attraction to impious and materialistic songs which are filled with hedonistic and sensual overtones but at the same time this will not lead to substantial advancement in Krishna consciousness because these professional singers are not attracted to Krishna per se so singing devotional songs by them will not awaken bhakti in our heart and that is why it is best for us to hear songs, bhajans discourses sung by devotees there is Sanatana Goswami quotes from the Padma Purana where he says that utam harikatha amritam shravanam naiva kartavya sarpo chishtayatha payam he says yes harikatha is supposed to be beautifying all the time it is just as milk is such a nutritious all the time but at the same time sarpo chishtayatha payam that when a snake touches a glass of milk with its poison then all the same milk which was nutritious earlier now becomes poisonous similarly avaishnava mukhod kheeram, those who are non-devotees if from them we hear Krishna’s lorries, those which are normally nutritious and energizing for the soul they become harmful for the soul like poison why like poison? because these people have a material enjoying mentality and we get infected by that same material enjoying mentality so Krishna katha is meant to free us and purify us from the enjoying mentality but when we hear it from those with an enjoying mentality then we also get that same enjoying mentality and that is why we need to always hear from devotees and you are fortunate that you are having that attraction already thank you
