Mukunda Mala Stotra, verse 32, part 8. Last part states Pibamana Sri Krishna Divya Aushadham So Kulashyakar Maharaj is praying to the mind Oh mind, please drink this Divya Aushadhi, this divine medicine. So here is the crucial part that this medicine is not to be drunk just with the tongue as are most medicines. This is to be drunk by the mind.
Sometimes when a patient is very sick then intravenous injections are given. So instead of giving through the mouth oral medicine we have intravenous medicine which goes directly into the blood stream and goes faster into the body thereby. Similarly, when we have to chant the Holy Names it is not enough to chant just with the mouth.
What we speak with the mouth also affects our consciousness. But especially when we are uttering the Mahamantra we can utter it mechanically and repeatedly and it doesn’t enter our consciousness. So in addition to speaking with the tongue we also have to make sure that it enters into the mind it enters into the thought process and through that it touches and transforms our consciousness.
Pibamana Sri Krishna Divya Aushadham O mind, when you understand how glorious is this Holy Name as a medicine how it can free one from all miseries how it can give one the greatest benediction how it can so easily make happiness available at the tongue tips therefore O mind, please chant these Holy Names. Please don’t think of millions of other trivial and troubling things but just focus on this one transcendental thought the thought of Krishna, the thought of the sound of His Holy Name. So the mind is at one level our enemy but at the same time we have to live with our mind.
So when we share Krishna Consciousness with the world we are actually sharing Krishna Consciousness with the mind primarily for our own benefit. We make the mind hear what we are speaking and by making the mind see sense we gradually change the nature of the mind. Of course sometimes the mind doesn’t see sense and just like a child who is not ready to study sometimes the mother may have to constrain the child to study but over a period of time the child himself learns the benefit of studies.
Similarly the mind may not like chanting right now and we may have to force the mind to chant but over a period of time the mind will learn to see the benefits of chanting. First of course the intelligence has to see the benefits and once the intelligence sees the benefit then the mind will accept it. So the intelligence has to become like the parent and through the parent the medicine is given to the child.
So like that through the intelligence the medicine is given to the mind. But Kulshekar Maharaj is praying over here Oh my mind, don’t be so recalcitrant, don’t be so stubborn please see sense, please realize how glorious is the Holy Name and drink it. It will benefit you, it will make you peaceful, it will make you joyful not just temporarily but eternally.
So in this way by contemplating on the glories of the Holy Name using our intelligence and gradually beseeching the mind sometimes forcing the mind and gradually transforming the mind we can all come to the taste where we relish the Holy Name whenever we chant it and then our life will become sushukham constantly joyful.
