People may respond to indifference, but that does not mean we cannot make a difference. We all want a sense of self-worth, significance for our existence.
And often we are socially directed. That means if people appreciate us, then we feel valued. And if people don’t appreciate us, we feel devalued.
So in such a situation, what do we practically do? If we start feeling devalued, we need to begin at the beginning. That means at the most fundamental level, our efforts can make a difference, if to no one else, then at least to ourselves. That means that if we strive, we become more disciplined, we become more more connected and contented.
The contribution that results from our efforts is not in our control. Sometimes we are able to contribute, sometimes we aren’t able to contribute. And unless we recognize what is not that people may not respond to what we are doing positively, but that doesn’t have to dishearten us because people are who they are.
Their values are different from ours. And especially if we are trying to grow spiritually, that means we are in some ways trying to focus on self-understanding. We are trying to focus on self-transformation and that is something which you can always do.
Every moment that we are trying to connect with Krishna, every moment that we are trying to devote ourselves to Krishna, we are growing spiritually. Our soul is becoming that much more manifest and we are moving towards fulfillment. If you understand this point and then start slowly responding to people’s indifference with indifference.
That means that not that we don’t care for others, but we can’t care so much for others that we stop caring for ourselves. Or especially we can’t care for people’s transient opinions so much that we stop caring for our own enduring values. Krishna urges us to stand bold and different from the general mass of society when he says, He says that that which is night for all living beings will be like day for the self-realized and that which is day for the self-realized will be like night for all living beings.
What this means is that for each one of us, especially if we are trying to pursue spiritual life, most people will not appreciate and we need to get used to that and still keep perceiving. And if we keep perceiving, sooner or later we will realize that our own consciousness is different and as our consciousness becomes more and more enriched, we also find that we are able to make a greater difference in the lives of others too. And they will also appreciate it in new course.
Thank you.
