Sathya Vratam Sathya Param Tri Sathyam Sathya Siyonim Nithamche Sathye Sathya Sathya Mritasathya Netram Sathyaatmakam Dvamsharanam Prapannam So, this beautiful verse is the first prayer by the demigods to Lord Krishna in the 10th canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam 2nd chapter verse 26 and in this verse the demigods have assembled to offer their respects to the Lord and they have earlier as described in the 1st chapter prayed to the Lord for help along with the earth they had gone because the earth had been overrun by demons so now in the 2nd chapter the Lord has appeared and they have expressed their gratitude so Sathya Vratam so my dear Lord when we came at the Shirasagar to ask you for help you said that you will descend soon and now you have descended so in this way you have kept your word true so you are a person who keeps your word then we are grateful Sathya Vratam Sathya Param and not only do you keep your word true not only are you fond of truth but you are yourself the supreme truth there are many truths in this world but Krishna is the highest reality and Krishna brings everything towards that highest reality gradually so you are true in all the three phases of time past, present and future how that is so is explained later Sathyasya Yonim Hitamcha Sathya Sathyasya Yoni Yoni means womb so the Sathya refers to the material world this is also true but it is a temporary truth and this temporary truth is coming from Krishna so in that sense Krishna is Sathyasya Yonim He is the source of the truth that is material existence Nihitamcha Sathya so when the world is destroyed at that time it is He alone who exists Sathya Sathyam so before creation it is Krishna who exists after destruction Krishna exists and even when the creation is there Krishna exists in the supreme reality so He is the truth in all three phases Sathya Sathyam Sathya Netram so Netram here means one who is the giver of knowledge one who is the revealer so it is Sathya Netram so you reveal the truth and you reveal sweet words of the scriptures and of your glories that lead to that truth and Satyatmakam in fact your very substance is truth you are made of truth so Krishna is Sat Chitananda there is nothing asat about Him nothing false or temporary or illusory about Him Satyatmakam so in this way you are the very embodiment of truth Om Sharanam Prapannah we surrender to you so that Lord who is the highest reality manifests to us every time we try to approach Him with devotion so when we chant the holy names Krishna is manifesting and how does Krishna manifest? as the holy name so it is Sathya Sathyam He is the highest truth and quite often when we are chanting the relative truths of this world distract us from the absolute truth what will happen tomorrow about that job interview that problem how will I solve that oh yesterday if only I had spoken like this and like that instead of like this so there are so many relative truths about the past present and future which keep distracting us but if we remember that Krishna is Trisathyam He is the truth in all three phases of existence everything else in material world is passing Krishna alone is lasting and when we say everything in material world is passing that doesn't mean that it is totally unimportant and we should neglect it completely no we have our responsibilities in this world and we should try to hold those responsibilities to the best of our capacity using whatever intelligence we have but beyond that what seems catastrophic today can over a period of time if we just let time pass actually no catastrophe happened most of it was my imagination only and even if some catastrophe has happened how long does the effect last so things pass and wounds get healed and even if some wound is fatal still even death is not the end of our existence we have next life after that and in the next life what happened to us in this life will not matter to us much what will matter is how we responded to it did we do bad karma, did we do good karma or did we do a karma in terms of taking greater shelter of Krishna so by meditating on this point by remembering how Krishna is the topmost reality and that there is no reality which can compare with him in beauty in glory, in eternality, in potency in loving nature for us in compassion for us so he is when nothing was there, he is there when everything is there, he is there when nothing will be there, still he will be there sathya sayonim nihitam cha sathya so sathya sayonim this material world is a reality but this comes from him sathya sayonim nihitam cha sathya so nihitam actually this world which is true is also this comes from him, it is sheltered in him and when nothing else will remain at that time still the world will be there so in this way we understand that he is the supreme reality and he is sathya sayonim nihitam cha sathya netram so he gives us the holy name he gives us the secret sound of the scriptures and through it all he makes himself available to us for relation for going closer to him for attaining the supreme reality of the spiritual world your body itself is made up of sathya made up of satchitananda which is the supreme reality so to that lord we surrender the demigods are praying this to krishna who is in the womb and we also remember that the holy name is the embodiment of reality embodiment of truth that supreme absolute truth who is inaccessible to even the greatest yogis has made himself accessible as the holy name so easily so mercifully and so relishably even if chanting of the holy name doesn't seem relishable right now we can at the very least remember that it is potent and we can see the potency acting in our own lives by little practice of krishna consciousness centered on chanting many of us have been able to give up our bad habits and if we just keep practicing diligently all bad habits will go away and we will be sheltered in krishna so he is the supreme reality and it is that reality which we want to welcome in our heart just as when we are trying to do a particular activity we concentrate our energies on that so that we will be able to do it productively do it effectively do it successfully so the same principle applies to chanting without concentration we will not be able to achieve success but in the case of krishna as compared to other objects where other objects are temporary krishna is eternal and so what we remember will determine where we will go after this life and will also determine how we live this life whether we live it in a way that takes us closer to krishna or it takes us away from krishna so irrespective of how many things seem important urgent if we remember that krishna is the highest reality that krishna i have access through the holy name by that meditation we can put aside other things knowing them to be temporary and focus on the supreme reality and thereby attain that supreme reality in due course of time.
