Summary
Navigating countless commentaries and classes can feel overwhelming, but studying scripture effectively comes down to anchoring yourself in a systematic, personal, and interactive approach.
-
Leverage the Oral Tradition: Combine reading with systematic audio or video classes from a trusted teacher to understand philosophy the way it has historically been passed down.
-
Commit to One Source at a Time: Avoid jumping between multiple commentaries at once; read one complete book or commentary fully before moving on to another to truly grasp the author’s unique framework.
-
Experiment to Find Your Style: Discover whether you learn best by hearing, reading, highlighting, or contemplating, and tailor your study habits to match your personal learning rhythm.
-
Practice Active Absorption: Slow down your pace by dedicating a portion of your study time to writing down your personal realizations, formulating questions, and reflecting on the text rather than rushing to “finish” it.
-
Engage in Shared Discussion: Create a small forum or group (such as a WhatsApp group) to share interesting points with others, focusing on why a specific verse inspired you to deepen your engagement.
Key Takeaways
-
Prioritize deep comprehension and absorption over speed and completion.
-
Use active study habits, like writing reflections and sharing insights, to turn reading into an authentic experience of self-realization.

How can you study the bhagavad-gita effectively i mean so many resources are available for studying how to know what resource to use and what to focus on answer studying is extremely individual activity and that’s why it’s very difficult to give one standardized guideline for everyone but still i’ll talk about three broad principles first is that let’s consider how study was done in the past in the past scripture was learned primarily through the oral tradition books were very rare and most people focused on getting getting content on hearing from some local teachers or some traveling teachers and that’s how they learned even those who studied in in gurukul were not just evening katha hearers but who studies philosophy they would also study under a teacher it was so the oral tradition was what was primarily disseminated knowledge and the written tradition was complementary reserved for scholars was for primary scholars now books are very widely available nowadays and that is good but still the point remains that things are still complicated that is that philosophy especially not easy to understand and therefore if it is to be understood it’s best to refer to the oral tradition primarily so we have books and books are important if you’re talking about you’re doing as it is but along with that he also started daily classes not only morning bhagavad-gita classes but evening gita classes also of his class so the idea is he wanted the scripture to be understood from the living tradition also the oral tradition the best if you want to continue the way it has been studied in the tradition the best step would be to look at how we if we can find somebody who has given systematic classes on the gita which we like and focus on thereby learning systematically from them so we read the bhagavad-gita verses and we read we hear their class it will lead to slow progress but still there will be progress even if it is slow and from there onwards we will get a deeper understanding I have been learned not only what the meaning of the verse is but you also learn how the words can be approached in different ways and that would be very helpful in our in the long run for us to move ahead in life and thereafter another thing is that when we focus on studying and understanding scripture it’s good to find our personal approach that helps us that means is it we learn more from hearing we learn more from reading we learn more from contemplating on what we write maybe highlight something and reread something again even there are multiple books we can make some experiments okay does reading multiple books from for one verse help that means read here different devotees classes here different acharyas commented on one verse we get a better understanding my experience when I studied the acharya’s commentaries was that every acharya has their way of thinking and that way of thinking is developed across the whole book and that is why it is like if you are trying to understand the book itself then better to take one book read it fully and then read another book. So, some kind of active hearing always helps that means if we have one hour to read say then spend 50 minutes reading and have 10 minutes for writing our realizations in our own words or raise a question and try to answer the question so slow down the process again but in scripture pace is not as important as absorption comprehension connection so don’t be in a hurry to tell the world oh I have completed the bhagavad-gita I have completed the bhagavatam no I completed acharya’s commentary if we have understood that will be seen in our actions that we see in our words just focus on that so I would say experiment various approaches to find what works best for us and third would be the extension of the second try to have some forum where we can share something maybe form our own whatsapp group or somewhere where we share some point which we found interesting and don’t just if you’ve read something acharya’s comment or heard something in a class don’t just state that point state why you appreciated that point that way we get involved in the process and if you think that I’m going to every day share one point even that one point in sharing that we will become more involved in our reading we read more actively okay what point can I share and then we will also learn more about ourselves okay what inspires me what persuades me what absorbs me so ultimately the gita is a book of self-realization and it is not only the the gita talks about self-realization and guides us towards self-realization but the studying the gita itself can help us
