helps us to experiment and to reform. The head is generally the seat of the intelligence. And, our emotions, especially if they become, they go out of control, then we cannot think very well, clearly.
So, generally, when we say, the head has become hot, that means, the emotions, Krishna compares, lust to fire. And, he says lust and anger are related. Generally, we can say, we also say that, when somebody becomes angry, that person has become red hot in anger.
So, generally, anger especially, lust also, but anger especially is considered hot. Somebody is angry, that person becomes fiery. So, when the head becomes hot, that means, the emotions have become so strong, that the head is not able to function properly.
And that’s why people will say, some other people will say, ok, cool down, cool down. Cool down basically means what? Of course, from a physical point of view also, when our emotions become too strong, and the blood starts rushing more through the body, the blood starts rushing more through the body, then, that also has different effects. You will see that, the emotions are strong, the breath starts becoming faster.
The, the brain supply, the blood supply to the brain also gets changed, depending on our emotional state. So, basically, my head which has become hot means, that the emotions have become so strong, especially the emotions that agitate us, that heat us up, like anger, or, you can say, also tension, too much burden is there, that we are not able to function properly. Just like a machine is there, a computer, if it becomes too hot, it cannot function properly.
Similarly, when the head has become too hot, it can’t function properly. So, when we are not able to think properly, because of excess of emotions, that’s when we will say, my head has become hot. And on the other hand, when we say, my heart is satisfied, now that we don’t, we are not referring to the biological heart.
The biological heart is just an organ. It doesn’t have any emotional satisfaction. So, the word heart is used as a reference for the seat of emotions.
So, the place where emotions are situated. Where are the emotions situated? That is the soul. So, when we use the word heart in the general sense, somebody says, my heart is broken.
Now, that does not mean, physical heart is broken. That basically means, the place where emotions are situated, the emotions are completely devastated. So, when we say, heart is satisfied, that means, at an emotional level, we are feeling very contented.
We are feeling very joyful. So, the soul, the soul connects with Krishna through some nourishing Krishna katha. Then, the soul becomes spiritually enriched with emotions.
And that’s why the person feels satisfied. So, the head becoming hot refers to the emotions becoming so strong that our intelligence doesn’t work. And the heart becoming satisfied we also use the word sometimes, the heart becomes warm.
When the heart is cold, that means, there are no emotions there. So, the person is completely frozen. So, we want our heart to become, so, warm is different from hot.
When the heart is warm, just like we say that, you know, the heart is hard, then Krishna cannot enter. But then, when the heart becomes soft, when an object is heated, when it is hard, it will become soft, then it will gradually melt. So, the heart becomes like, we say heart becomes like butter.
When Krishna comes to steal the heart, that basically means what? That means that, the heart’s emotions are becoming more and more malleable, more and more shapeable. Butter, it’s, like if we have cheese, very hard, sometimes. You know, like amul butter, if we keep in fridge, it’s not very easily shapeable.
But when it is put, exposed to some heat, it becomes a little more shapeable. So, when our, currently, our emotions may be very active material. If I see some attractive or sense object, my emotions get very activated.
But, when I see beautiful darshan of Krishna, I do not feel so active. My emotions may not feel so activated. So, what has happened is, our material emotions are hyperactive right now.
But the spiritual emotions are not so active. But when there is a, when there is a satisfying contact with Krishna, then our spiritual emotions become activated. And then our heart feels satisfied.
So, some people may say that my heart is satisfied even in material things. But then that satisfaction doesn’t last. Somebody may, that satisfaction is only temporary.
But when there is a connection with Krishna, that satisfaction comes from purification. That satisfaction comes from devotion. And devotion is a eternal asset that we have.
So, that satisfaction will be lasting. It can be either way also. Meaning? The emotion becomes uncontrolled anger arises.
Yes, correct. So, emotion becomes either with fully to the Krishna or to the devotees. Yes.
So, all our emotions can also be spiritualized. And sometimes there is, we also have spiritual anger. We have Hanuman becoming angry.
When he becomes angry, he burns up the Lanka and then he thinks, oh, have I burnt Sita also? So there, because those emotions are in service to Krishna and they are based on love for Krishna, so they are considered positive. They are considered exalted. So, at our level, those emotions will take some time to develop.
So, that’s why we don’t focus at our level too much on emotions. Because to analyze whether a particular emotion is material or a particular emotion is spiritual, is very difficult. So, Prabhupada’s presentation was focused more on, not on emotion, but on dedication.
Now, as long as you are committed to serving Krishna, Shudra Giridhi Prabhu asked Prabhupada, Prabhupada, whenever you come to a particular place, when you go to the dancing and singing and crying and tears of welcoming you or tears of separation when you leave, I am always with you, but I don’t feel such tears. Prabhupada said, but you are serving me with dedication. So, we focus more on dedication and by that dedication, whatever material emotions we have, they will become purified and eventually spiritual emotions will awaken.
So, at our level, if we focus on dedication, then the spiritual emotions will automatically awaken over a period of time. But if we get right now, too carried away by emotions, then it can work out negatively if we get too carried away by material emotions or sometimes we get carried prematurely by seemingly spiritual emotions, then some people can become sahajiyaic also. So, at this stage, that’s why we hear the philosophy, we have the pastimes, but we don’t hear too many advanced pastimes of Radha Krishna because when we hear the pastimes of Radha Krishna, the intimate pastimes, then the emotions that they may arouse in us may not be appropriate.
An advanced devotee hears the pastimes of Radha Krishna, they identify themselves with the Gopis, and they think how we are serving Krishna and how Krishna is enjoyed. But when we hear those pastimes, we will identify with Krishna and we will think that we are the enjoyers. That’s why those esoteric spiritual emotions, we keep a distance from it right now, but otherwise, in the service of Krishna, whatever emotions we have, if they can increase our dedication to Krishna’s service, that is wonderful.
