Question from Manikandan Prabhu. According to Satyoga, the meditation process is recommended to go back to Godhead, Tritayuga, sacrifices and Dwapar Yuga, worshipping deity in temple and Kali Yuga, Sankirtan and chanting the names of Hari. But still we have temple and our worshipping deity.
Building temples and worshipping deity is recommended in Dwapar Yuga. But why are we still worshipping deity? Please clarify. Answer, it is not that the processes of spiritual life that are not the Yuga Dharma are banned in any particular Yuga.
We see that chanting the holy names was done in earlier ages also. So the important point is that a particular method is highlighted at a particular time because it is most suitable for the psychophysical nature of that age, which the psychophysical nature has also been engendered, created by the socio-cultural atmosphere of that age. So it is the most recommended and that should definitely be followed.
But that doesn’t mean that other methods have to be banned. The point is that we have to develop a relationship with Krishna and we have to accept whatever limbs of devotional service help us to develop that relationship with Krishna. So our Acharyas have described that the primary method is hearing and chanting Shravanam Kirtanam Vishnu and within that also chanting the holy names is primary as the method for self-realization as described in scriptures.
But along with that, because we in Kali Yuga have an impersonal conception by default, that is something which is there within all of us, also in all ages, but in this age it is much more because of the materialism, by materialism we often depersonalize people because even when we are attracted to people, we often treat them as objects for our enjoyment, not as people. So this depersonalization that is there, when we take it in the spiritual realm, we depersonalize God also. So there is this depersonalization that is there within the human psyche because of materialism and because of that we don’t really think of the person Krishna when we chant Krishna’s name.
It remains just an abstract sound vibration for us and serving the Deity helps us to become conscious of Krishna as a person. It helps to bring punctuality, it brings cleanliness, it brings the dimension of personal reciprocation, all of which are important for developing a relationship with the Supreme Person into the forefront in our devotion service. So, especially to highlight the personal aspect of Krishna, it is important to do Deity worship.
At the same time, our Acharyas have emphasized that Deity worship should never be given so much priority that people neglect the chanting of the holy names for the sake of worshipping the Deity. So that is definitely not recommended, it is undesirable and it should be avoided. But beyond that, we even do yajnas, when for example, temple installation is there or initiation is there.
So it’s not that yajnas are banned. Similarly, Deity worship, especially when it helps us in doing personal, in developing personal consciousness, then it is very uncool. At the same time, it shouldn’t be given more importance in the chanting of the holy names.
Chanting is a Yuga Dharma and Deity worship helps us in developing a personal understanding of the person whose name we are chanting.
