If we have a stockpile of karma that amounts to say 100, karma cannot be mathematically quantized, but for the sake of understanding the concept, we can use quantization over here. So if we have caused emotional torture to somebody then we may get emotional torture in return and that may be best suited to come in our human body because it is in humans that the consciousness is adequately evolved so that they can actually get the benefit or they can get the benefit of spiritual advancement and devotionally rich emotions if they want it and they can get also the karmic consequences if that’s what they are meant to get. So why do we forget or why do we get the reactions when we have forgotten? I have discussed this in my lecture on karma as well as an answer over there.
Basically the important point is not to remember the specifics. The important point is to remember the principle that action is reaction and that we don’t need any elaborate lesson to learn that. We see this in this world also.
If I put my hand in fire, I burn. If I jump down from a 10-story building, I suffer the reactions. I may break my bones.
So actions beget reactions is the principle. That is true. Now time lag will be there because different actions are like different seeds and they give different reactions.
So for us more important than remembering the specifics of which action gives which reaction is to remember that actions bring reactions and therefore we should choose the right action so that we will get the desirable reactions. That is punya or better still we do actions that bring no material reactions but give us spiritually purifying reactions. That is they give us, they purify us and they take us back to Krishna.
