So if we understand that certain qualities are good and certain are bad still why don’t we like the good qualities? Why do we like the bad qualities? There are two main reasons for this.
One is the inner habit. The second is the outer culture. The inner habit means if we have indulged in particular kinds of behavior repeatedly then that becomes habitual for us.
For example, this floor is sloping downwards. When it is sloping downwards if water spills over here it will automatically go downwards because the floor has slid like this. If I want the water to go up I have to make a conscious effort.
So like that if we have repeatedly indulged in certain kinds of actions in the past then our thoughts are tilted in that direction. Our inner consciousness, our inner territory is tilted in that direction. And that’s why those things happen without any effort from us.
So if something has become an inner habit for us then we have to become conscientious. When I am doing this, no okay. I have this reflex action to do it but I will not do it.
But the wonderful thing about this is our inner territory is malleable. Although it may be sloping in one direction that means we have one kind of habits right now we can cultivate a different kind of habits. And if we repeatedly do the good things then even doing the good things will become a habit.
And for that the outer culture is important. Outer culture means if the people whom we are around us if they are habitually doing things which are not good then we will have no impetus to do good things. For example if we come to know that I want to wake up early and study.
Morning time is very good for studies. But if you are staying with friends all of them are sleeping till late in the morning. You may wake up early in the morning and say everybody is sleeping, just go to sleep.
But if you have a friend who wakes up early in the morning and that person you wake up and then that person is waking up and studying then you wake up and say let me also wake up and study. So, outer culture. So, if we want to develop a good habit although right now we do not feel attracted to that habit.
Then we try to find out someone who has that habit and try to associate with them. By that we will get the impetus to develop that habit. And by doing that activity repeatedly our tastes will change.
Right now because of habituation we will be attracted to something bad. But it is not our permanent mental pattern. It is changeable.
And by repeatedly doing something good our attraction to that will happen. And then we will become habituated to the good things also. Ok.
We will have to I think you should give others also a chance for questions. Thank you. Any other questions? Yeah.
Hi everyone.
